TOPIC: 11-1-02 The Hideout, Chicago

JamieCarroll gave me the honors of posting the set list, so I hope I got it all down:

Circus
See You Through
Leave it all Behind
Darkroom
Look out Below
Buffalohead
33 1/3
Kari Ann
God Save Rock n' Roll
Action
Thursday

I thought the show was kick ass. Parish's winter hat definitely a highlight. The venue was really cool and the crowd seemed really into and was packed in (I had trouble seeing). Matt said it was the best stop on tour so far and that the people were really friendly. I didn't get a chance to stick around for all of Bowl of Fire but what I heard sounded good.
It was also really great to see JamieCarroll and deevol (so nice to give me a ride) and see Lauren again.

Also nice to see you, etcetera! It was so fun to be in a big old city and see so many Features supporters. There were some Chicagoans singing along who I didn't recognize, which was also cool. Many thanks to Rollum for requesting Action. The show was great great great, but my favorite part was how the entire crowd was cheering by the end. They were cheering loud & hard for an encore, but unfortunately the house music started. Andrew Bird et al were wonderful too.

Sounds like it was fun, I wish I had cash so I could just travel and see all of the bands I want to see play.

ETC - Thanks for the setlist. The show was a real winner. Our Cuban dinner at Cafe LaGuardia in Bucktown (off the hook!) ran a little late, so we didn't get to the club until right before the Features started. The Hideout was a smallish kind of club in an industrial part of town, but the atmosphere was absolutely great - a really cordial vibe and a bright red cutain behind the stage. The croud seemed to LOVE the Features. And the Features seemed to LOVE Chicago. In fact, Matt said from stage that the Hideout was the coolest club they have ever played, and that the people there were the nicest they had ever met. I really enjoyed (briefly) visiting with everyone. I wish that I could've stayed longer, but our Chicago plans were a democracy, and me and deevol didn't have all of the votes. We did have a blast in the Windy City, though. I can't wait to go back.

I'm glad you had a fun trip, jc. Hopefully I'll see you and the Features back here before too long. I hope you enjoyed your Chicago-style pizza and the architectural tour, too.

The tragedy of this whole thing: I ended up having to work for a friend that had to go home due to a death in the family, so I missed it. I was really looking forward to seeing the band and meeting so many of you, and it just didn't happen. Hopefully they'll be back soon, or I'll be able to see them when I'm home in December.

Thanks go out to Lauren who seemed to hae figured a way to get me in, even though I was unable to take adantage of the opportunity.

You're welcome, although it just involved sneaking you in a back door. I'm sorry you missed the show, but I'm also relieved that my own mishaps weren't the reason.

Was this the tour from the historical society? I did that one a couple of years ago & it was great. This visit we went to see the Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Oak Park, which were pretty amazing. Chicago is such a cool town- if Pizza Hut hadn't come out with their own Chicago style pizza, I might have considered living there.

I think the Chicago historical society has around 80 different types of architectural tours in different neighborhoods. Oak Park is really cool. The one that I went on was a boat tour down the Chicago river around downtown and was really interesting.

Oh and Wiyum, I hear rumor that you are the other Features fan up in Evanston. I'm sorry you couldn't make it to the show.

It's true...the Chicago Architecture Foundation does offer 65 different architecture tours in the Chicago area. We took the previously mentioned downtown boat cruise on the Chicago River - very informative. The day that we did the tour (Sunday, 11/3) was actually the last day that they were offering the boat cruise until spring, and I can see why - it was cold! But it was well worth it. We also drove out to Oak Park on Sunday to look at the Frank Lloyd Wright homes - very cool as well.

By the way, Lauren, I am offended that you mention that Pizza Hut bullshit in the same sentence as true, authentic Chicago-style pizza. We ate Chicago-style pizza not once, but twice while we were there - once at Giordano's and once at Lou Malnati's. I must say that Lou Malnati's is now my favorite pizza place in Chicago. I've had the Pizza Hut "Chicago Dish", and it doesn't even come close.

Haha- Pizza Hut offends me too, both morally and gastronomically. I just thought it would be funny if someone thought they were having a real Chicago experience delivered to their door in Boondocks, USA. I introduced a certain bass player to Chicago pizza last weekend & he loved it. I made the mistake of having my Chicago pizza experience before my boyfriend arrived, though, and he almost left me. The pizza is that good.

That's really funny that we were both in Oak Park Sunday and didn't run into each other. Did you do the tour of his house?

It's interesting to me that we're slamming Pizza Hut so hard now after such a hard-core praising of Cici's several months ago.

Cici's is cheap.

Plus, I feel kind of powerful when I walk in and 21 sweaty teenagers half heartedly say "Welcome to Cici's"...like I own the place. It's a magical land.

I like Pizza Hut's "Chicago-style" pizza. I don't think it tastes anything like Chicago-style pizza, but I still like it.

My favorite pizza joint in Chicago is Pizzaria Uno. What can I say? I'm a sucker for the classics.

Did you do the tour of his house?
No. Once again the Democracicity of our trip delayed our arrival to Oak Park. We missed the tour of unity temple and His house/studio. Oh well, the neighborhood was excelent and just seeing the outsides of the homes was enough for me, for now.

Chicago is a great place and starting the trip with the Features and some Cuban food was a super way to begin a vacation. Unfortunately the Cuban stuck with me for the rest of the weekend. I thought the Hideout was a real cool place, great sound for such a small venue. I weaseled my way up front only to find out that getting a beer from there would be impossible. When I asked the girls at the table next to me how to get a drink way up there they shrugged and turned away from me. Next thing I knew they all had fresh mugs, jerks. Especially impressed with Rollum playing thru his head cold, blowing nose between songs, didn't miss a beat.

How about a Features show at the House of Blues next?

maybe those girls thought you said "WHY don't you get a drink up there" not how... and they shrugged like "ok, we will get a drink" because I can't imagine someone ignoring your sweet ass. i mean face.
