1/2 the Features
Grand Palace
1-21-06
opening for the Mattoid and Apollo Up!

Matthew T. Pelham: vocals, acoustic guitar, bass drum
Parrish F. Yaw: keyboards, tamborine, background yelling
--------------------------------------
Leave It All Behind
Exhibit A
Concrete
The Beehive State*
Foundation's Cracked
The Drawing Board

*Randy Newman cover

I wished for more songs since I'd driven down mainly for them. I was glad that it wasn't all Exhibit A songs. The new songs continue to grow on me, and having a copy of these stripped versions makes me like it even more. If they don't pull out a real old one like "Matt's Little Ditty" or "Your Smile" or something, then I'm only interested in the new stuff these days.
I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party.

this was very interesting. the stripped down songs sounded really good, but i probably would've been disappointed by the brevity of the set if it hadn't been for "beehive state." god, "beehive state." i would've come just for that.

as my first features-related show in almost 9 months, i was quite excited about the potential of this show and did not leave disappointed. it was my first time hearing "foundation's cracked" along with the other new songs and i must say that they are magnificent. however, the defining moment of the night for me was "beehive state". so unexpected and yet so fucking perfect for this occassion. it made me quite the happy lad as i screamed with delight.

Well, you can't say The Features are jumping on the bandwagon. Those guys have loved RN for years. He's even listed as an influence on their Myspace profile! So, it's official!

"The Beehive State" was the features' walk-on song for a while last year. Although it was the Nilsson version.

p.s. i have reaallly been getting into Randy Newman lately. Matt and Rollum got me into him a while back, though i only recently got his first two records on my iPod. Great, great stuff. I always just thought he was some goofy guy that my dad listened to...

I always thought of him as the annoying guy who sang the songs in Toy Story.

When Digsy told me they did "The Beehive State", I got pretty upset. Harry's version is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's superior to Newman's, in my opinion. I like to try to forget that I missed this show. I'm pretty mad at myself. I'm thinking I could get Matt and Parrish to play it for me if I paid them... Oh well.
