ENCORE:
Paid to Think
Circus

It's as if someone somewhere has flipped a switch, and now the Features are bona fide rock stars in Nashville.  The club was packed.  Did it sell out?  I would guess so, but I don't know for sure.  The downstairs was full, the upstairs was full, the stairs were lined with people.  Oh yeah, THE TABLES WERE MOVED!  Well, except for two (reservations).  The crowd was really into the show (a rarity in Nashville).  The crowd reaction was almost as good as the one in Knoxville last month.  Um, lawnwrangler, it happened again.  Show's over, Features offstage, minutes pass, crowd still cheering, house music comes on, crowd still cheering, then an encore.  That's twice now.  So anyway, it was heart-warming to me to see such an incredible reception for the best band in America.

As far as the show itself, it was very good.  The selection of songs was perfect - lots of new and old (No Your Smile, though).  There were technical problems, but none that ruined songs.  In fact, in Exorcising Demons, Matt broke a string, and changed guitars during the quiet part of the third verse, and Parrish did the best improvised fill-in that I've ever heard.  Does Parrish have a future in a jam band?  Maybe.  Roger was playing the Explorer, which was nice to see.  Well, I'm running kind of long now, but the skinny is that it was a blast and I'm sorry if you missed it.

ghostflower, i'm not trying to make it worse, but they DID let a lot of people in underage.. they just put an 'X' on their hands. happens a lot at 12th and porter, which i think helped the numbers.... sorry.

Actually, I spoke with a member of 'Upper Management' shortly before the show started, and he said that the show was not 21+ at all, but had been changed to 18+.

eno's review (a long time in the making)

My Tyger started off.  I only heard one, maybe two songs.  They are better than most bands I have to endure before a features show but I'm not exactly running out to buy the CD either.  Nice people and I saw a pretty purple bass.  I'll have to hear a full show before I praise/trash them (which is only fair I guess).

Character.  Dear god, redefine relevance.  If they were any less commercial, their name would be Nazi Jew Killers.  They are progressive rock whether they like it or not.  A flute, xylobells (my new word), and a freaking theremin (the world's most super double relevant instrument).  I think they could use another dozen people onstage.  I will buy the CD when it comes out and they have moved passed Lifeboy into 2nd place on my favorite local band list.  I really wanted them to walk away from their instruments one at a time on the last song and huddle around the keyboards, each playing something different.  This oddity band, which I will not call character, but rather King Crimson Jr. (or would that be Prince Crimson?) has become the third relevant local band on my list out of some dozens and dozens of bands I've had the displeasure of hearing.

Then the features came on.  Yes, they made everyone forget character even existed.  Quite possibly the best concert I've seen them do (i think i'm up to about 40 now).  They ARE the greatest band in the country and the crowd knew it.  King Rory packed us in like irrelevant sardines and made a killing.  No 'your smile' but that is fine.  Sound guy knew what he was doing.  I don't mind tech difficulties if it means I get to hear King Rollum and King Yaw improvise on their toys.  The show was over and the crowd refused to leave and were going to torch the place if the features didn't continue.  Some moron pushed King Roger and King Matt back onstage to get an encore (which they were going to do anyways and probably wouldn't admit it).  I would not mind at all if that show was the tracklisting on the album verbatim.  I cannot say enough good things about this concert except no one in that room was worthy of hearing them for $7.  $20 is more than fair.

Yes! The amazing crowds and their instistance of encores must continue. There's a good chance they will too, since that's two shows in a row of that caliber, in different cities even. I had a blast, enjoyed all three bands and the trip to Idaho afterwards. Once again a weekend in Nashville easily surpasses the amount of fun I would have had staying in Knoxville (accept, of course, when the Features come to town).
An open frame in the 10th, I WAS ROBBED!

i've noticed that they almost always do an encore.. the clue is that rollum does not start to take his drumset apart, but when the boy is ready to go, it is disassembled pretty fast.

Yes, that is what I based my assumption on. He goes for the cymbal to his left and unscrews the top thingie. However, I once saw him take it off and put it back on.

I thought the sound was a little under par for 12th & Porter, at least from where I was in the balcony. I thought the set was good length and full of all the standards, but I didn't walk away in the regular concert buzz the Features usually give. My favorite part was hearing 'Circus', which I left off my favorite live song list in the other part.

Despite all that, down to business--
I got an A quality stereo recording last night that will be on CD before too long, and I want to trade. E-mail me.
I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party.

well, it technically was still 21+, that's what rory said. but they didn't turn away anyone that i saw. at 12th and porter and a show like that, i would just risk it. other shows, maybe not. but they check id at the bar so i guess they figure that will keep under 21's from drinking

You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

I just wanna say that the 12th and Porter show was one of the best I'd been to in a while. It's a great venue for the features.
