TOPIC: 4-12-02  Vanderbilt Gym, Nashville

this was definitely the weirdest features show i've ever been to.  it was for vanderbilt seniors, although myself and two other non-vandy students were 'allowed' in (i think we were the only ones paying attention to the band, though the janitors seemed to like them too).  the school provided sandwiches, soda, cookies, fruit and beer to everyone. probably the first and only time i'll eat an apple whilst watching the band perform as a 3-piece.  that's right, no parrish, as he was ill.  i didn't keep a list of the songs they played, but i do remember hearing:

idea of growing old
buffalohead
armani suede
blow it out
moonlight
darkroom

parrish's parts were missed, but despite his absence they still sounded pretty good (especially taking into account that they were in a gymnasium).  they were supposed to play for 2 hours, but they probably ended up doing a total of 30 minutes (and took a few breaks in between).  i think the vandy students were more interested in talking to each other than watching the band.

Wow!  No Parrish?!  That must've been very wierd.  The students at the Character/My Tyger Vanderbilt show a couple of weeks ago were equally uninterested.  Oh well, at least Vandy pays big $$$.

these vandy kids and their social events why do they even bother to get bands at these things all they need is a dj spining some top 40 tunes

I'm just jealous because I missed as special a show as the Features as a three piece. That would be something to see rivaling a one-time reunion with Jim O'Shea or Don Sergio. I would really like to see/hear that, as much as I love Parrish and all the huge/little extra things he adds to the Features songs.

vanderbilt is quite capable of producing musically well-adjusted youths, thank you.

dearest deevol,
i will submit that dirty white hat clad, dave matthews sticker-on-SUV frat types make up the majority of the vanderbilt student body, but every now and again students who matriculate (and graduate) are into great music. i think you know one. i will say though, one i know who briefly frequented vanderbilt with his impeccable good taste did leave.

That person indeed was the basis of my joke. I also know of the graduate you speak of. I was just having fun. I too am entirely sick of the Dave Matthews, SUV, frat types that seem to dominate college campuses everywhere, especially UT.

I love carrying on two conversations in the same thread-- it's what makes message boards great.

I knew Jim O'Shea was with My Tyger. I'd been wondering for some time on the whereabouts and fate of Don Sergio. The Preservatives haven't been active lately, and I'd wondered that. And while I'm prattling about it, I'd like to know what prompted Don to leave the Features. Anyone?

from what i understand, don wanted to focus on his songs(most of which never saw the light of day with the features). i've heard several stories though. it's probably a combination of a lot of things. just like a hot dog. hot dogs are good.

All that's much more plausible than the 'harvesting coffee beens in Honduras' stories I'd heard.

that's feasible. don is a swarthy fellow. it's hard to place his ethnic background. i've heard he's german/italian. i can't see the german. does anyone know the signifigance of 'wop' and 'dago'? i've always wondered where those slurs came from.

I think 'wop' came from the lable 'without papers', from when immigrants were being sorted at ellis island. I don't know about dago, unless it's short for dang ol', but I doubt it.
