TOPIC: Cambridge APU Student Union Show
Posted  Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 1:19 PM
Post 1 of 24
We're on our way to see the show in a few minutes. I had a chance to post, and I thought I would. I'm expecting crappy sound and a short set in this small hole of a venue. It's the student union bar in the basement of the polytechnical school. We'll see how it goes. Details and setlist will follow...

We can't wait to catch up with all of you later...

Love,
YDDD and Token

Setlist:

Circus
TWIMTB
Exhibit A
Blow It Out
There's a Million Ways
Walk You Home
Me and the Skirts
Kari Anne
Exorcising Demons
Mosis Ptosis
Thursday

As soon as we left the bistro where we posted last night, we walked over the venue and heard their sound check, which sounded surprisingly great. We talked with the different band members as they got ready. They talked about difficulties in touring, including laundry and showers. Matt also related a very interesting story to me about Parrish almost getting into a fight. Great stuff.

For those who care--they brought 2 basses and 2 guitars, Parrish's Aha! keyboard and the moog. Everything else was rented. Parrish's moog now has a Daiglenetics sticker on theside of it.

Buffalo was the opening band. Like so many things here in Britain, they were largely the same as anything seen in America, but there's some difference that I can't quite put my finger on. No, it's not the accent. Maybe it's whe accent singing about her home in San Francisco...

The set was great. The crowd reaction was OK. There isn't much of a scene in Cambridge (apparently--from talking to a local or two), and so there probably isn't a crowd out looking for the next big show. There was no advertisement for the show either, except for a minute listing in a magazine. Roger has really startedrocking out while playing!!!!

They gave me a copy of the Million Ways... UK Single. It has the video on it for CD ROM as well, but I haven't watched it yet. A very non-Mahaffey version of See You Thru is the b-side. Both new tracks sound great.

The Features last night, and the Royal Shakespeare Company tonight. I'm on a quest for the tackiest Shakespeare souvenir I can find. Hopefully there's a Shakespeare thong out there somewhere.

More later.

There were listings posters in all the colleges, all the way up and down mill road, king street and also fliers were all over the shop. There was also a preview for the show in the local paper, as well as nice mentions on www.alternationmusic.com, www.apugigs.com etc. No publicity is a bit of a misnomer. Sorry to sound defensive, but i work hard on my shows.

YaDaDaDa, did you notice the weather? It was pissing down with rain, so hardly a suprise that people didn't make it down. Cambridge has got an active and healthy gig going population, however The Features just aren't as well known yet (more's the pity). Don't judge the show so inaccurately

It's more than a little unfair to say there was no publicity - aside from the flyers and posters (yes, I did see them), it was emailed and I had a text message to remind me it was happening.

I'm afraid you seem to be somewhat ill-informed, YaDaDaDa... this was a midweek gig during half-term on a rainy day, with a band that, sadly, not many here had heard of. There is a scene in Cambridge; I think you may have been talking to the wrong people.

The Features were great, though.

Slough

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town -
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears,

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales.
That's so NA.

I was referrring to the "3" new members defending the scene. I just quoted yours because it referred to all three of the posts.

I know the other posters. A post goes up implying that i'm not doing my job and i will defend myself and friends of mine are loyal and, if they've been to the show, will stick up for me. Cambridge is a close knit town and we look out for each other.

Wow, I'm glad Yadadada was the one to post the review.

I think he meant to say that we didn't see any advertising, which doesn't at all mean there wasn't any. I mean, we were tourists in Cambridge for two days, and we didn't listen to the radio much to boot. We certainly are not in the know about the Cambridge music scene.

So, GMP, I'm sure you were doing your job. I mean, we watched Matt get interviewed (can't remember where the interviewers were from) before they played, and I'm sure that wasn't an accident.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the show.

god, americans are so obtuse! if they would just pay attention to their surroundings, maybe they could make better assessments! stupid americans. why didnt you stupid americans look everywhere for a poster to promote the show? were you too caught up in "being rich" or "being the world police" to notice a freakin poster in a dressing room? good job getting culture shock and inadvertently insulting the locals!

i would suggest that approximately 0 persons attended the gig after noticing the posters in the dressing rooms of the venue...just to state the obvious and only the obvious, like a stupid american. of course, i am just a stupid american who was not there, so i don't know--i just felt the obligation as the "world police" to make sure my unsolicited interpretations are routinely obstruent. mission accomplished, i'd say.

Next to the door leading to the dressing room on A NOTICE BOARD. If it had been in the dressing room that would have worked too, as the dressing room is the uni refectory during the day anyway. The dressing room was off a main thoroughfare through the uni, so was pretty obvious. Anyway, i've made my point that i publicised the gig, so bye.
