TOPIC: Chronicles of Narnia

Saw it tonight. I enjoyed it.

Some of the special effects involving the sky and water were atrociously digital, but the lion was really cool and lifelike.

I haven't read the book since elementary school so I caught alot more of the symbolism this time around....

That's the first semi-good opinion I've heard.

On on unrelated note, I've heard good things about Aeon Flux from people whose opinions I value, which surprises me.

I guess I'll have to wait and see on both counts.
What.

I want see Aeon FLux... I've heard the same things... Ain't It Cool said it was a surprisingly good sci-fi film. The trailers looked like a giant turd. Sounds like Paramount didn't know how to push it.

I've heard horrible things about Narnia... especially in the SFX Dept. I doubt I see it, since we have a whole list of mut sees before then. The only downside of a baby... dinner and a movie now tops $100 once the sitter is in the mix.

TF and I went in with low expectations. I'd resigned myself to see it just because I'd read all the books as a kid and read the first one a few times. Maybe the low expectations helped, but it turned out to be a great telling of the story, and it was remarkably faithful to the book.

I thought the sky and water CG sins were atoned by the quality work in animating all the animals.

And kudos to Disney for using all ugly British children.

Through a series of unexpected events, I saw both Aeon Flux and The Chronicles of Narnia over the weekend. I liked them both.

Aeon Flux was a very good science fiction film. If you don't like sci fi, go see a gay cowboy movie instead. I thought the story was a bit spotty in places and there were a few times that I thought the characters actions were a bit unbelievable. However, neither of these sins were unforgivable. Best of all, the movie looked wonderful. The utopian city of the future looks marvelous and manages to be futuristic without being hokey. Of course, spending a couple of hours watching Charlize Theron prance about in a tight, black outfit is its own reward. (For the record, I've never seen nor read the source material for this film. I'm not even sure if it's based on a set of books, comics, or animated films.)

As YDDD mentioned, I went to see Narnia with very low expectations. I'd heard that the effects were bad, and the film is obviously Disney's attempt to create a LotR/Harry Potter-style franchise. When a movie is made simply to make a ton of cash, it's usually not very good, but in this case, I was very pleasantly surprised. The special effects were quite good, and most of the animated animals were extremely well done. There was only one scene in which I thought the effects were not passable, and it was only a brief moment when the four children are standing in front of an obviously CG sky. Given a choice between epic fantasy battles, I'd choose this movie over LotR.

Thaks for the review... may have to edit the must see list.

As for as Aeon Flux... I loved the original animated show on MTVs Liquid Television. It was like nothing I had ever seen, and the main character was killed every episode. Mind blowing. Of course, I was in this huuuuuuge Le Femme Nikita (the movie, not the series) kick, so AF was nothing more than an extension of that. I took away alot from the series though... there is hardly any dialogue at all in the TV episodes. "Show it, don't say it" became my college film mantra.

I'm glad its getting some reviews of positive merit. The Peace Froggette has no interest at all in seeing it, and the raised eyebrow and silent accusations of "You just want to see Charlize prance around in a catsuit for 2 hours" can now be countered with "Its a good film!" I won't feel like a total lecher seeing it by myself.

That said... dark-haired Charlize Theron in a catsuit... yowza.

in light of what has been said in this forum page, i would like to stress that we scottish people do not appreciate being called british as it associates us with the english. they're bringing us down with them. have you ever noticed for example how at wimbledon, when tim henman (really crappy english tennis player) is doing well he is called english but when he's doing badly he's british? or that when andrew murray (scottish tennis player) does well he is called british but when he does badly he's called scottish?

The difference being those Republicans and Democrats chose to be politicians. Scotland didn't choose to be a part of Great Britain (the more correct nomenclature is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) unless you're counting the Act of Union passed in 1707 (which the majority of the general Scottish population did not support).

i know your not calling the scots english, but by calling them british your grouping them together with the english which most scots don't like. there are 2 flags, and 1 combined one, you'll notice that on the british flag that the english one is in front of the scottish one but you'll find that on some flags in scotland the scottish flag is in front of the english one. by calling us british your associating us with the english and making us all seem alike but we are in fact very different people in many ways.

How exactly does the existence of a combined flag that sometimes puts the English flag first and sometimes the Scotish flag first prove that we shouldn't associate the English with the Scots? In fact, isn't this even more of a reason to associate the two countries? Just because you don't like the fact that Scotland is part of Great Britain doesn't mean that it isn't; therefore, Scots are Brits, as are the Welsh. That's all I'm saying.

By the way, what prompted the discussion about Scots? Isn't the movie about 4 kids from London? From what I can tell, we were just calling the kids Brits and you saw that and thought of Scots.

The Alec Baldwin and Jack Black episodes were really good. And the Napolean Dynamite episode had the Black Eyed Peas commercial in it, which I thought was hilarious. After reading the history of SNL book (all 400 pages), I have tremendous respect for that show and how much work they put into it. So I'm biased, I guess. I also know that the show goes through peaks and valleys, and it's in another valley following the election year surge it had in 2000. It'll get better, it's the nature of the show.

It's been my dream to be on the show since I saw my first episode when I was around 10 years old. It was the one where linda hamilton hosted.

I think I've read that book you're talking about, too. I saw Tom Shales on Conan, went out and bought the book the next day and read on a plane that night.

I still have hope for the show. I met Amy Poehler last time I was in New York.

I took the tour of the NBC studios this summer and got to see the studio where SNL is taped. I almost cried...yeah, I get that emotional about TV.

I read the SNL in a week or so, 200+ pages in one day. Quite a feat for me since, well, I rarely read anything other than comics.
