Through a series of unexpected events, I saw both
Aeon Flux and
The Chronicles of Narnia over the weekend. I liked them both.
Aeon Flux was a very good science fiction film. If you don't like sci fi, go see a gay cowboy movie instead. I thought the story was a bit spotty in places and there were a few times that I thought the characters actions were a bit unbelievable. However, neither of these sins were unforgivable. Best of all, the movie looked wonderful. The utopian city of the future looks marvelous and manages to be futuristic without being hokey. Of course, spending a couple of hours watching Charlize Theron prance about in a tight, black outfit is its own reward. (For the record, I've never seen nor read the source material for this film. I'm not even sure if it's based on a set of books, comics, or animated films.)
As YDDD mentioned, I went to see
Narnia with very low expectations. I'd heard that the effects were bad, and the film is obviously Disney's attempt to create a
LotR/
Harry Potter-style franchise. When a movie is made simply to make a ton of cash, it's usually not very good, but in this case, I was very pleasantly surprised. The special effects were quite good, and most of the animated animals were extremely well done. There was only one scene in which I thought the effects were not passable, and it was only a brief moment when the four children are standing in front of an obviously CG sky. Given a choice between epic fantasy battles, I'd choose this movie over
LotR.
