i rarely like epic love/war films... but i loved this one.
and this one has it all...love, war, humor (renee zellweger is fantastic) and suspense... i didn't even notice that this one was 2.5 hours.
and damn is jude law beautiful.

ps. jack white looks like a who.

havesomesoma and i went to go see this last night.

i didn't realize it was 2.5 hours, either. I thought this film was beautiful. I especially loved the performances of Giovanni Ribisi (who earily reminded me of raydavies in this one), Renee Zellweger, Jude Law and Jack White (who had much more of a part than I was expecting and did it very well).

They mixed the humour in very well with the rest of the story, which i suppose is very hard to do in this type of movie.

The funniest part of the movie, however, was when Jude Law was shot while trying to help his friend at the beginning and some idiot in the crowd remarked "he's stupid!"

absolutely beautiful. i loved it (and not just because of jack, who was, by the way, really great/beautiful in it). all the actors did great jobs and i want to see it again (and again and again...). what a wonderful way to spend christmas night.

and deathscythe, you're just jealous because the 'he's stupid!" guy had the guts to say what all of us were thinking and you, my friend, did not. no, wait...he really was an idiot.

Giovanni Ribisi (who earily reminded me of raydavies in this one)
That's strange becuase I find Giovanni adorable while I, of course, hate Ray Davies... wink.gif (tee hee)

I at first only wanted to see this movie because it is an Oscar contendor, but now I actually want to see it after hearing such good reviews.

I can see it. Both are extremely hot, but they share the same eyes, as well.
Why would you do that?

I did not care for the picture. Jude Law and Zellwegger (sp?) were fantastic but it ended up being a heavy handed romance story.

Just my opinion.

I freakin' hated Rene Zellweger in that movie...I don't understand why everyone thought that was great acting. It seemed like great over-acting to me. All that stompin' around crap got on my nerves. Her character was too stereotyped, and so was the set up b/w her and Nicole Kidman. Nicole Kidman's "manly clothes" in the movie cracked me up...they were so chic, did anyone else notice that? When she finally had to assume manly roles, she put on those black work type clothes, but they were still very "cute." That killed me.

Giovanni Ribisi seems to always plays roles I hate. He was disgusting in this movie (what was with the little boy wearing the dress?), and I didn't like him in Lost in Translation, and of course I never liked him on Friends, but that's tv. I feel like he never recovered from having Downs syndrome in The Other Sister. He was ill-suited for Boiler Room. Just don't like the guy, and he looks very average to me (no offense to the comparison to ray davies, I don't see it anyways).

I liked this movie though, although it took me a while. I thought Natalie Portman was the best actress.
Why would you do that?

someway somehow Hollywood decided she was too high and mighty to play normal early 20-somethings roles.

plus belmont boys drool over her. laugh.gif

i wonder how Harvey Weinstein feels now that Cold Mountain got shut out of the important Oscar noms. Maybe now he'll concentrate on the film he'll be directing. God, if only I was kidding.
Bill, it was a different time. It was back when we didn't know the Russians were incompetent.

I definately enjoyed this movie! Of course, it had its touching love story aspect...but I even more so enjoyed the relationship between Nicole Kidman's character and Renee Z's character, those were some of the most touching moments in the whole movie! The nudity was also cool lol.

I hate nicole kidman, she's overrated, therefore I could not enjoy this movie, plus it was way to predictable blah blah blah. Although it did provide a decent amount of eye candy (jude law)

You must choose. It is like that movie "Sofie's Choice" only it is Nathan's choice. Do you know that movie, "Sofie's Choice"? It is like that. Only it is this.

During the civil war era, it was commonplace for young, even teenage women to marry much older men since the only expectation for a woman of that time was to get married as soon as possible, so I don't think Natilie Portman was casted incorrectly, since she is in her 20s and that would prob. be considered almost too old to be newly married.
