Has anyone seen this movie? I watched this the other day, I had seen it a few weeks before, also, and I didnt really understand it, I have gotten explinations, and I've been to the website for the movie, but I'm not satisfied with the explinations, please tell me your opinion on this movie.

I have seen it, only once, and no explanation I recieved was satisfactory. I was "left with more questions than answers" as the saying goes. Go to IMDB.com and find some opinions there, that's what I did. I'm probably going to have to view it again sometime soon.
That's so NA.

I've seen it twice. I saw a few problems with it the first time, but through heavy discussion at Waffle House realized that I was wrong. The second time was pure enjoyment.

Why don't you ask questions about what you don't understand -- it's gonna be hard to just explain this movie from start to finish.

I enjoyed this movie, but in my experience it's highly overrated. If you ever look at member profiles in online communities of 20somethings (i.e. friendster, live journal, etc.), you'll find about half of them list it as a top ten movie if not the best fucking movie of all time. Everyone told me it was a life-altering mind-fuck. I, on the other hand, thought it was a bit amateurish. Of course, I have nothing to back this up.

I got your six on that one... I think its such a mismash of stuff that its wide open for interpretation... not by design, but by accident. Its not layers deep as say an "Eyes Wide Shut" it just exists and then you take from it what you think the filmmaker meant to say, if he really meant to make a statement at all... I know that sounds vague but BrianW can attest... sometimes happy accidents occur, and people get waaaaaay to much credit for stuff they didn't even mean to be there...

i did see spaceballs in seventh grade on a school trip. my friend and i went halfway through the movie and looked at each other and said, "i thought this movie was about baseball." (we thought it was baseketball)

I understand most of the movie (I think), but it's the ending I dont understand. I now he obviously had to of gone back in time but, i dont understand how. I've heard he found a "worm hole" but didnt the movie say you had to have some sort of vehicle to travel through time? the explination I got is that Frank(the rabbit) was a messanger from God who taught Donnie that he didn't have to die alone and by going back in time and staying in his room while the engine crashed into his house he saved the lives of inocent people.

wasn't the plane the vehicle?... and when it got sucked in, everything went back. and the piece from that plane was what killed donnie, and because the rest of the plane got sucked in they couldnt find a trace of it. since it was in the future...

after a long discussion, my friend & i came to a conclusion we were satisfied with. unfortunatley, i havent seen this movie in forever so i dont remember it.

but if th plane went back in time that means donnie would have been outside again like the first time, the reason I think donnie went back in time is because in his letter to roberta sparrow he said, when the world comes to an end he hopes he can brwathe a sigh of relief because the will be so much to look forward to, and right before the engine kills him he lays down in his bed smiling, like breathing a sigh of relief cause he knows he's gunna die and he has so much to look forward to. maybe I'm reading to much into this movie and it's really more simple than I'm amking it.

i dont remember why, but i think it was because the bunny was no longer existent so he wasnt there to make donnie go to the golf course or where ever he went.

I don't think the rabbit was a messenger from God... I don't know where anyone could have interpreted it that way... I saw no evidence of God in the movie.

What I think happened was that Donnie was slowly, through each iteration of the time loop, realizing that he was in a time loop. His subconscious knew, and was seeping into his pre-conscious and conscious. This is also why he was going "crazy." He didn't know how to interpret the messages he was getting from his mind. The rabbit was a manifestation of his own mind remembering Frank from previous iterations of the time loop. The vehicle, I believe, was the storm. The entire town was stuck in the time loop, he was never in contact with the plane until the end, etc. The reason he kept going out to the golf course was not really a message from beyond, but that's just what he always had done that night. The other behaviour that he exhibited (bursting the pipe, etc.) were his mind's (he was sleep walking and his subconscious was in control) way of trying to get himself out of the time loop. However, none of the other behaviour worked. He was using trial and error. Eventually, he realized that if he died it would at least end the time loop for himself. As well, this greatly changes the course of actions for everyone else around him, ending their loop.

I think it's like Groundhog Day with amnesia and psychosis.

Hmm.. Donnie Darko. I don't know. I just watched this movie for the first time tonight and enjoyed it, but I don't see all the things others of you have stated. I think that too much is probably read into this movie. I have no desire to try and figure out a philosophy or "actual" storyline that connects the events and symbols together as if it were an true story, but rather appreciated the existing connections and enjoyed the imagery. Just like I did with Mulholland Drive. Although I don't think that DD has nearly as much depth as Mulholland Drive does.

Just my $.02
