Don't buy it. Rent it. It's good, but not that good.
I disagree. It is
that good.
For me, it was pure, unadulterated cinema. It was a man telling a story that was hollow and shallow, but which had everything needed for a good cinematic narrative. This same man found the most stylistically engaging and interesting way to tell this story, recalling all of said story's sources. It is "low" cinema, but it is the best, most celebrational "low" cinema you'll find. And it is great.
But I'd also caution against buying it. The disc has no extras, and the film is definitely only half a film. Given how Part Two was, it is a seperate film to be sure, but nothing so essential that you need to buy it now in lieu of the box set that is being planned which will likely include a four-plus hour cut of both films as a single experience, plus and minus bits to make it work better as a single whole. THAT is what I'd buy. Worth the wait.
But do rent it and see the second part. It is low, but it is also pure cinema, and the energy that went into it alone is so viscerally experienced by the audience that it is immediately irresistable.

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.
