This is a snippet from the AP review. I haven't seen it, but I have expressed this theory on TC before. Maybe even on here.

Cruise is also essentially playing the same guy he's played in nearly every movie, from "Top Gun" to "Jerry Maguire" to "Vanilla Sky." He's cocky, he gets his comeuppance and, in the process, finds humility. So you could just as easily imagine him blurting out "Show me the money," and that wouldn't seem out of place, either.

Not to argue that this schtick works for him though....

Minus his character. Every other person in that film is a great character actor, and there goes Tom. Being himself.

Plus, while I like the movie, it was a little long for my impatient head.

Just the name gives me acid flashbacks.

Days of Thunder! I saw that with my dad when it was in the theatre. After the scene with the "cop" that "pulled" him over, a young Richard Dawson was changed forever.

I also like Risky Business. I will now stop with my un-artsy answers, and you can resume your conversation.

I thought his Tom-ness worked better there than in any other film. The seminars and interview have him push his Tom-ness almost to the point of acting...but not quite.

And I still love Rain Man.

Geez, I must really not be picky enough with what movies I'm sitting through or liking. I liked the Mission Impossibles. I liked Vanilla Sky, Magnolia, and Minority Report. i had fun through all of those. I'll probably like Last Samurai. Never cared to see Jerry Maguire, though.

Jerry Maguire is probably my favorite film you mentioned there. You should check it out.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

I'm a sucker for the Mission Impossibles, Vanilla Sky, and Minority Report. I really enjoy Magnolia too. Jerry Maguire was enjoyable, but I wasn't crazy about it...nor am I crazy about Risky Business or any other earlier Tom movies...except Rain Man. I love Rain Man.

But, my favorite would have to be Tom Crooze's Oscar-worthy performance in Mission: Improbable.

So Keith and I went to see this last night. When we weren't making out, I sorta enjoyed the movie. I have to say I wasn't blown away (although I was... nevermind). I just got a feeling that the movie was too self-important. But the visuals were pretty good, the action scenes were effective, and the acting by the non-honkies was excellent. Whoever said Tom Cruise doesn't overact in this one was wrong. Dead wrong.

Oh, and it needed more Asian boobies. And by "more" I mean "some".
