In an interview with DVDFanatic.com, Simpsons producer Mike Reiss confirmed that work on The Simpsons Movie has started.

Reiss said the following on the movie:

"It’s been 13 years of wanting to do “The Simpsons” Movie. Finally FOX said, “Let’s just do it!” We never had the greatest idea that was compelling but FOX said, 'Maybe if we start paying you, you’ll get inspired.' And sure enough it worked! We’ve got a very good and interesting idea and it’s different from the show. You know, it’s like the “South Park” movie where it’s just a bigger, longer, amplified version of the show. I can’t tell you anything specific about it. My wife doesn’t even know the secret."

Reiss said the following regarding when it will come out:

I will say two years from this summer. I think it’s going to be Summer 2006 or maybe Christmas 2006. It’s a reality after being just sort of this phantom idea. I think it is really gonna happen.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

A professor at MTSU told a class about this a while ago, but he didn't know any specific dates. Thanks!
That's so NA.

I think they have done it all in 13+ seasons. What is seriously left to be covered in a movie?

Swearing and Ultra-Violence?

I wonder what rating the film will have....?

There seems to be a lot more drug humor these days. I can see them exploring that a little further.

Maybe Bart will finish the 4th grade...

wow. yeah, the possibility of a movie has been discussed for like.......12-13 years? it's not that surprising to me that they're doing it now. the producers' excuse was always, "the simpsons is first and foremost a tv show, and we need to concentrate all our energy on that to make it as good as possible".
considering the show's dramatic dip in quality in the past 5-6 years (the last few seasons have been embarrasingly bad), it seems like they'd have time to focus on a movie now - as long as they don't have too many new versions of "simpsons monopoly" to write jokes for.
at the same time, maybe they could get some of old writers back for this and focus on making it actually funny (i couldn't care less about "the secret"). this could really go either way....

i'm really hoping they go for a pg-13 rating.

It would be a good idea to have a season where Bart and Lisa move up a grade and Maggie learns to do something.
