So...

Has anyone checked out this film on the life of Sylvia Plath? I enjoy her poetry and am interested in seeing this flick, but I'm not sure if it is worth shelling out $8.00 (Yes, this is now the price at Green Hills, can you believe it?) to see it. I found it interesting that her daughter has denounced the project. On the flip side, I think Paltrow is pretty talented. Any reviews?

On another new movie, I saw Love Actually last weekend and found it enjoyable. I know it is just a crowd pleasing romantic comedy designed to instill warm fuzzies for the holiday season, but - hey - I'm a sucker. If nothing else, I have to say that Keira Knightley is absolutely beautiful. And Colin Firth is always a treat. Yum.

I've read not-so-hot reviews for Sylvia, but I've heard very good things about Love Actually.
That's so NA.

Well, I guess I'm glad I saw the latter, and I'll probably wait on the former. But, yeah, Love Actually is fun. If you like the Notting Hill, Bridget Jones sort of thing. (I do.)

I do as well. I watched Sliding Doors a few nights ago (featuring Ms. Paltrow), and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Didn't "Syvlia" already close at Green Hills?

I have to see it, I just don't know if I want to see it. I've been into her stuff since my sophomore year of high school, but I'm afraid it'll be horrible or just leave out lots of stuff and I'll hate it. But I *love* Gwyneth Paltrow. I don't want to have any hard feelings about her either. tongue.gif

That really doesn't surprise me about Frieda denouncing the movie. It probably portrays her dad in a less than flattering light, as most things since Plath's death have. There marriage fell apart (yeah, he was cheating) just like millions of other marriages, but it wasn't his fault she killed herself. It was her second try, the first was before she met Ted. She had problems that would have manifested whether or not she'd ever married anyone.
remember that its all in your head.

"My Mother" a poem by Frieda Hughes, daughter of Sylvia Plath

"The peanut eaters, entertained
At my mother's death, will go home,
Each carrying their memory of her,
Lifeless - a souvenir."

Love Actually
It looks like a neat movie. But unfortunately, it has Hugh Grant in it, so I won't be seeing it.

So, do you refuse to see About a Boy? If so, that's too bad-- it's a great movie. I've never understood why someone would give up on a movie based entirely on an actor (albeit the lead actor). It's like all the saps who say they refuse to watch Fight Club because they hate Brad Pitt. I don't have much of an opinion on Brad Pitt, but Tyler Durden's a fuckin' badass!

I was extremely underwhelmed by About a Boy. Of course, I read the book first, so that's probably why. Nevertheless, I agree with your point about not judging a movie by its actors.

i saw sylvia on friday night. it is playing at green hills only at 10:30 pm. it was extremely disappointing. gweneth did a great job, but the direction was awful and it could have been about any depressed person who committed suicide. i think thats what i hated most about it- that it didnt tell you anything new about her, or even really introduce her poetry. nothing from the bell jar was included.

i knew going into it that it was going to be a depressing movie, but the truth is it didnt even really move me that much. all foreshadowing was dreadfully blatant and discouraging.

the best things about this movie:
1. the lighting
2. gweneth
3. the baby
oh the drudgery of being wet

Yep, that's right. Nothing with Hugh Grant. And nothing with Brendan Fraser (except maybe Airheads, but he pretty much ruined that, too).

although it looks like hugh grant has a major role in the movie, he has about as much screen time for his story as everyone else... i think the ads make it look like it's mostly about him, but it's not.
i doubt you'll see it anyway
maybe i could sing along
to your neverending songs,
i'm just looking for some fun

i don't think the movie makers were granted the rights to use any of her actual poetry & writing.
