TOPIC: The Hollywood Stock Exchange

Has anyone else played this online? (www.hsx.com) I haven't played it yet and online games aren't my thing but everyone keeps telling me how addictive this is. I think you get 2 million dollars to start out with and you buy stocks in movies and movie stars that goes up or down depending on how well the films are doing, other people's trading, etc. It works just like the NYSE, complete with the scrolling updated figures on the site. Stock in "bigger" stars/films or really anticipated films like "Kill Bill Vol. 2" costs more than more obscure up-and-coming films and stars. My film buff friends were giving me "buy low sell high" stock tips last night, like to buy stock in Mark Ruffalo of "Eternal Sunshine" because he's cheap right now but will probably be all over the place soon.

i think there's something similar with bands, though i don't have any info beyond that. i think one of my professors at mtsu had us do it??? being out of school for 5 years has turned my memory into mush.
i am pretty clueless as far as the stock exchange is concerned.

I'm clueless about stocks as well. Maybe this will be good practice. Except in real life I'll never have 2 million dollars to invest in the market.

Fantasy baseball is good, but I always get pissed off and quit mid-year. Mainly because I have a weird knack for picking an entire team of players who will all at one point or another during the season, be injured for 2-6 weeks.
Sometime's I'm thinking that I love you, but I know it's only lust.

I know you're a Reds fan, but stop drafting Junior. Dumbass.

kidding i was, fantasy baseball is when a bunch of people start a league, and pick real baseball players for their teams. the players stats throughout the season determine the winners of said league. so the person with the best player wins the league.

You pick certain major league baseball players to comprise your "fantasy team." Your team earns points based on how the players you picked perform in actual baseball games. This is all facilitated online.

I gave up on fantasy baseball a few years ago. I just don't have time to watch enough baseball to make informed decisions. These days I watch the Cubs and that's about it. But hey, an all-Cubs fantasy team wouldn't be a bad idea this year!

I am way into fantasy football, though.

Damn you, Miami Vice The Movie, make me some money, bitch!

I suppose I'd be doing better at this if I actually knew how the real-life stock market worked rather than just picking movies and people I like. Dave Foley & Jeremy Irons are costing me, too....

I took the opposite approach. I have tons of stock in Scooby Doo 2 and The Alamo.

I bought a lot of stock in Matthew Perry, so The Whole Ten Yards had better do well. I also have X-Men 3, Spider-Man 2, and The Fantastic Four. Fingers crossed.

I also bought some Spongebob stock after reading Stopforme's post.

its about what movies or actors you expect to do well. most of my stocks are long-term winners, too. pirates of the caribbean 2, maggie gyllenhaal, hope davis, sam rockwell, bewitched, the producers, press your luck, etc. its gonna take some patience though... just like the stock market.

Yeah I suck at this. I play too much with my heart rather than my brain. I picked Alison Lohman because I think she's pretty and Derek Luke because I think he's hot. Both are stock market losers. Also...why isn't everyone anticipating Mira Nair's version of Vanity Fair as much as I am??

Even though I totally suck at HSX, it does keep me abreast of movies being released in the near future.

This one, "Vinyl," sure sounds like an oscar winner:

"Vinyl follows the story of a group of women behind a male rock 'n' roll band that is on the verge of breakout success. Dominique Swain will play a groupie who pursues the band's singer."

stopforme and smee, a girls' night out to see it and a nail painting fest afterwards??? tongue.gif

i read about this movie on imdb.com the other day. looks ... interesting? rock n roll movies always have the potential to be really lame (i.e: 'rock star').

I am doing pretty poorly, especially when it comes to actors. I just had to sell most of my actors because I've done nothing but lose money on them. For some reason, it seems like movies are the better way to go. For instance, Will Ferrell stock is way down while Anchorman stock is on the up.
