I watched Troy tonight and I did enjoy it, but man oh man were they off on the story. I don't know if any of you care about this but Wolfgang Peterson didn't show many of Achilles faults and set him up to be the hero. Hector was the true hero in the book, the producers, writers (Pitt included) obviously wanted to make Achilles the loner fighter turned hero all b/c of the love of a woman ("You changed me.") The fighting scenes and special effects were good. The movie was also a Lord of the Rings reunion complete with Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Boromir (Sean Bean). Eric Bana did a great job as Hector and Diane Kruger was a beautiful Helen. Any other opinions?

I got to see about 30 minutes during my insane 13 hour shift on Saturday. I would like to see the rest of it at some point, but if I don't get around to it while it's at the theater, I probably never will.

The movie is also a comic book reunion since it stars General Stryker of X2 (Brian Cox) and the Hulk himself (Eric Bana). It's like a geekfest.

Well, it is called Troy and not The Illiad, after all. There was nothing, to my mind, that didn't fall under some kind of "rewritten from another point of view" sort of reinterpretation, and those are always fun. It never made claims to be a direct adaptation of Homer, and I didn't ask it to be.

I Liked it. Not sure yet how much. I was disappointed that they didn't make Sean Bean as morally bankrupt as they could have, mostly because in The Iliad he clearly was so, and because I adore Sean Bean for his portrayal of weak-moralled characters (006, Boromir, that guy in Ronin, etc). I wish they gave Brian Cox more to do.

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.

Oh, I know. I'm just sick of bad characters being glamorized. Was the movie about Troy or Brad Pitt's ass? I would say the second choice. I liked the movie, don't get me wrong, but it seemed like it was all about Brad (and his ass) and him pouring water over himself.

Just to be a jackass... the Illiad was written close to 400 years after the Trojan War, so I'm pretty sure there are some inaccuracies in Homer's version as well.
