TOPIC: What was the best movie
Posted  Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 7:53 AM
Post 1 of 40
This was discussed a little bit in the 28 Days Later thread a while back, but now that this summer is really dead and gone, we can put all the movies we've seen into perspective. So what were your tops?

My top 5:

1. X2
2. Finding Nemo
3. Down with Love
4. T3
5. Matrix Reloaded

There might be one I left out, but those are the main ones I remember seeing.

Overall, this was a pretty odd summer....

I was going to say this as well. It's perhaps the best thing I saw the whole year.

How have we gotten this far without one mention of the summer blockbuster "From Justin to Kelly"!?! What about "Gigli"?

I don't know if you could call either of these movies "blockbusters", Carl. But FJ2K was hilarious and Digsy even bought it on DVD the day of its release. Gigli was paiful and we left after 30 minutes. I never want to see the rest of it.

There has been much discussion about FJ2K, esp. from Digsy. I don't think anyone sat all the way through Gigli, which makes it hard to discuss.

I meant on this thread, dude. As in, "How can we have a discussion about the best movies of the summer without mentioning FJ2K nor Gigli?" Sorry to be vague.

I'm glad to see that there are people who appreciated "Hulk." At the comic shop that I frequent, I hear nothing but "Hulk" bashing and the comments that Ang Lee should never make another movie. I usually just keep my mouth shut because, well, I would rather buy my comics and skedaddle.

And Wiyum also put Hulk in his top 5, but I'm groggy and still unsure of how to double quote...

Rest easy Digsy... he has been pulled from that project. They have the sets built but internal squabbles on the script have put it on hold again. Word on the street is Tim Burton or Kevin Smith (attached to the project years ago) are now being talked to again.

I would be happy with either of those, but more so with Tim Burton. Kevin Smith is okay, but I think he is definitely overhyped. DC really needs to get on the ball. Marvel has been dancing all over DC in terms of films lately, and as a Marvel fan, that makes me happy.

DC has a way of making great first films, and then completely blowing it with the sequels. "Batman & Robin," anyone? Marvel, on the other hand, produced "X2," which is the best comic sequel ever made, if not near the best comic movie ever made.

Let's be honest here... the Batman sequels and their goodness (Returns) or utter badness (Forever; and Robin), can be chalked up to Tim Burton vs. Joel Schumacher. Easy as that.

I don't trust Kevin Smith to direct his way out of a paper bag. He should go the way of John Hughes and let other people direct his material (but not the way of John Hughes in terms of only writing worthless shit). Give me Burton to direct Superman any day of the year.

Superman 2 was really good, but 3 and 4 weren't as slick. I do think, though, that the 80's and early 90's belonged to DC, while Marvel has since kicked ass. As a former comic book junkie and DC fan, I must remind everyone of the Captain America, Howard the Duck, and Punisher movies. Nuff said.

Indeed. DC started out strong and then did a nosedive, while Marvel started out ridiculously horrible and is now going strong. Hopefully with the new Superman and Batman films coming out alongside the eventual FF movie and Spidey/X-sequels, both companies will share success at the same time.

Although, I think that DC should move on to other characters. Yeah, Batman and Superman are the quinntessential heroes, but they've been done to death. Speaking as a comic fan, reception towards "Smallville" is pretty darn positive and I don't think Supes needs a movie at this time. When is Wonder Woman going to happen? Where is Green Lantern? Or heck, why don't they just slap them all together and do JLA? That would be cool.

In terms of licensing characters, I think Marvel is the stronger of the two companies. DC seems to solely rely on the strength of Supes and Bats, while Marvel has a vast assortment of characters that haven't had films yet. We have still yet to see Avengers, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, etc. I guess what I'm getting at is that the general public recognizes Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman more than any other Marvel character. But, after those three, I can't think of any other DC characters that register with the public as much as Ghost Rider, Punisher, Captain America, the Fantastic Four. Once again, I'm a die-hard Marvel fan, so I'm biased.

I love how there are important political debates being held, and I'm the one discussing comic book movies. I'm such a 10-year-old.

Did anyone see the bootlegged version of the Fantastic Four? So bad... yet... so good.

I would crap my pants if they made a Ghost Rider movie as good as Spiderman and X-Men. On a related note, I thought Blade was alright. The sequel was a joke, though.

I liked the "Kiss From a Rose" song by Seal for Batman Forever. Yet another thing not admitted every day. And, I thought that it was a fun movie, just not as classy as the others.

I have it downloaded on my computer. I really could only get through the first hour or so, and I then had to stop. It was indeed hilarious, but also very very painful. The only positive aspect of the film is that the Thing looked pretty cool for 1994...even if he looked like a midget covered in baked beans...

There is a Ghostrider script in devel. Word is its fantastic, but the mess with the orgin a bit. I've never read a Ghostrider so it won't affect me, but some of the hardcore fans already have their panties in a bunch. And Batman Forever, if I may, is an enigma. It's a pretty good Batman flick. But its like that Bond film Never Say Never Again... kind of a bastard stepchild in the whole thing. The soundtrack to Forever is kickass as well. My wife had it in her work mix cd's last week. Every now and then I could hear "Kiss" and that U2 song...
