TOPIC: 12th & Porter, Two Nights in a Row!

You, the message board member, will pick 15 songs that will be played in the setlist...
You can't be serious! (No, that's not a vote for a song.) This is, like, the most freakin' awesomest thing that's happened to me sincethat super hot chick with kinky blonde hair walked into my office yesterday. Is this the band's belated birthday present to me?

And will we get any hints about the "surprises" for the Saturday show?

Damn damn damn. Why does this have to happen while I'm out of town!?! Damn damn damn.

This is about the coolest damn thing a band could do for its hardcore fans. Seeing that this decision sprang from a messageboard thread, I propose we start a new thread: "Please Reschedule this Show to a Time in the Near Future when Carligula will be in Town".

And now cue the complaints from the underage crowd...

wrong. my dad will love the features.

even though we were supposed to be in atlanta (a day early for the strokes show) i think we may just have to stick around 'til sunday morning for this one. can anyone say "your smile"?

this is the coolest, most thoughtful thing the band could ever do for its fans. thank you.

All I will say is that I cast all FIFTEEN votes for the chance to hear "Your Smile" in concert once again. And if they go through the trouble of learning to play it, I hope that we can get the dance that goes with it.

This is all I will say on the matter. Thank you.

So uh, the Nov 7th date doesn't have that little 21+ icon on the shows page... does that mean it might be 18+?

This kinda sucks because my roommate has been begging me to come with him to see his favorite band O.A.R. ever since I dragged him to see The Features. Apparently he already bought tickets to an Athens, GA show on the 7th. I think one of the opening bands for the Features is from Athens. I hate irony.

Please please please please please please please... someone record one of these shows!

Darnit!
maybe i could sing along

My first reaction is to ask for Discotheque and Rabbit March. And what a great time to ask Don Sergio to guest play on that song! Serious would be up there. And I would love to see Luke from character play theremin on Demons.

As for covers, (I know they're not up for vote but lets do it anyway) Parrish and I used to talk about how great the features could do Savoy Truffle. I would die to see them do that, with P doing the horn parts on the moog. Then of course there's also the standard VU songs I'd love to see. I'll go ahead and be "that guy" and ask for Virginia Plain. Everyone says that its such an obvious choice they won't do it, but who gives a shit. Its one of the greatest rock songs of all time and it just so happens that one of my favorite bands, the features, could pull off better than anyone else. And it would bring the house down.

Speaking of Roxy Music, I think it would be great if the band came out in full early RM costume.

Well I intended to put the 21+icon there but for some reason it didn't make it up there. I think it is official 12th & Porter policy that all its shows are 21 and up.

And I would like to ask very nicely for everyone to include "Don't Lie To Me" somewhere in their list. Pelham says it's in the wrong key for him to sing it and thus it went away a few years ago. Silly rabbit, he wrote the damn song, he can change the key! Let's force him to do so by making it a part of our top 15.

Okay, not to rain on this parade any but there has been one stipulation added by the band (and I think it's only fair). All songs most be from the time Rollum's been in the band. So pretty much everything AFTER the Features EP, and the songs that were recorded during those sessions, are fair game.

HFS, I CANNOT believe this is the week BEFORE I'll be in Nashville. I'm going to invent 8000 message board names to vote for Don't Lie to Me and whomever gives me the bootleg will earn something special.

New addition to the mix (will be added to the show pages a bit later today):

20 year olds and under: a limited number will be allowed to attend both nights. Be there early. Doors will open at 9pm. Also, your ticket price will be $10. This is a rare chance to get to see a show at 12th and Porter which is almost always 21+.

you said it, carl. i love this band, their management, webmasters, the people at 12th and porter, and everyone having anything to do with the features at all (including messageboard members). this day is divine.

Thanks guys! Rachel, let me find out about the requirements for those even younger than 18. I'll need to double check that it's not an 18-20 age range that's being allowed in.

Also, yet another little snidbit to add: for those who pay online via paypal, you will not receive tickets but you will be put on a list with the front door person.

Don't Lie To Me must be played at this show. Discotheque, Damage, and Temporary Blues are my other, lesser requests. This is only because the last two have been played within the past 6 months or so. Anyone that requests Rabbit March is subject to an asskicking.

This totally rocks!!! And Carl, you took the words right outta my mouth!!! A HUGE thank-you to everyone who worked all the underage stuff out! Whats weird is that after I heard about Mariah Carey letting her fans pick the setlist for her concerts, I thought to myself "why couldn't the features do something like that?" Anyway, I could never say thank you enough times for this... I was really about to shell out a fortune for a fake ID for this one, It'd be worth it!

So when do we get to vote and how will that go about? I'd say the best thing to do would be to post a complete list of "potential songs" and let the fans check off what they want to hear. Whichever songs get the most votes make it on the setlist. Also, I think it would be cool to submit suggestions for covers! We've talked enough on the message boards about what we would like to hear. I'm putting my vote in for "Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads.

Since voting ends Friday, will we know what songs are to be played beforehand or will we be suprised at the show?

I wrote down all the rarities that I wanted to hear and still have four more spaces left.

This is too good. I'm so happy that they're letting in 20- people; however, my mom might be upset that she doesn't have to get me in now.

Not only two nights in a row, but two super-duper special nights in a row.

And let me just say..."Savoy Truffle" would bring tears to my eyes...as would any other Beatles song...or Jet...or any other solo Paul... There must be a cover suggestions thread started.

A Roxy Music cover would be great, too. "Virginia Plain" would be good, as would "Love is the Drug" (of course), "Remake Remodel", or "All I want is You", etc., etc., etc....

The top 15 will be hard to compile.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

According to BW, voting starts tonight! So what's the word on pre-Rollum songs? And if a song was written before Rollum came along but the band has played it since his arrival, is it fair game? I believe "Your Smile" might fall into this category. Either way, I'll vote for it. I'm willing to waste one vote just for the chance to hear that song live. While they play it, I'll burn candles in memory of Eno.

As far as I know it's still the Rollum era rule. With that in mind I'd vote for as many of these qualifable songs as possible. Perhaps they'll change their minds, but they haven't told me so.

The voting begins Monday but since midnight tonight is Monday, then yeah, voting can begin later tonight. I locked that other thread because I didn't want any confusion (apparently there was some confusion over who was to start the thread, I thought I had mentioned somewhere that it would be created by us, but no harm done). It should simply be a list of 15 songs and then we'll go through and tally up and find the songs with the top 15 votes.

I'll be sure to restate the rules at the top of the thread tonight.

OAR sucks.

By the way, the Features really really really need to play the Pixies' "Hey."
Bill, it was a different time. It was back when we didn't know the Russians were incompetent.

I'm concerned that the overwhelming generosity of the band will lead to several people getting greedy and thinking they are entitled to special treats at every show.

Just a thought.

i should add that from my brief encounters with features fans, and my time on the mb, the fans seem to be a welcoming and grateful group to both other fans and the band.
i was even warned about the supposed negative or uncomfortable vibe that is apparent at murfreesboro shows, and really didn't feel much of that at all at the inferno.

AH, two nights of Features...I found this out quite by accident this weekend when I took an impromtu drive up to Nashville from Memphis to see Lucero rock out in my hometown...imagine my suprise and glee at seeing Features posters everywhere - and they are playing with Snowglobe, a really rockin' band in their own right - one I have caught many times in Memphis. I will be dragging several Features virgins into town for these shows and I'm pretty darn excited about it.

I have no idea is this is post-Rollum (please forgive me, all those who have been fans much longer than I)...but I'd really like to hear Kari Ann. It makes me happy.
It's all about taking the easy way out for you, I suppose.

okay, just to be super clear about this...under 18: get there early and bring your mom........18-20: get there early but leave your mom at home.....right? and do i remember reading somewhere that doors open at 8pm? just want to make sure that i get the "early" part right.

and if that's the poster pictured on the main homepage, then it is really cool.

Soma,

I was told the doors open at 9pm, but I'd probably be there earlier. I'm not sure if 8 is too early... I'll try and find out.

And as far as parental supervision, I believe this applies ONLY to those 17 years and under. 18-20, you simply just have to pay the extra ticket cost and be there early. Mom and/or dad can stay home, but hell if they love the band have 'em come along.

Well, is anyone planning on recording this? I can if need be. My recorder only records in mp3 format (sorry). I've got the archos jukebox 20 with a audio pro. brand stereo mic. Its got a battery box to power the mic. Only thing is that all the recordings I've made so far come out with a lot of bass. some have been ok. I forgot to order it with a bass rolloff sad.gif anyway, I'll record it if you all would like. I've got some bands up at www.MetroMusicToday.com if you would like to hear the quality.

perhaps... however when someone who works there tells me something I tend to want to believe them. Sorry if this little clarification pissed you off. That really wasn't my intention. I simply didn't feel like showing up an hour or two early/late only to find there was some sort of a mix-up and us younger ones can't get in. It's not that I don't trust Brian W's info, I was just double checking to be sure I wouldn't be screwed over.

On the flip side, I guess I am learning that the venue workers who know anything about anything don't work during the daytime.

Sorry, I just think it's silly that you are one of many (MANY) people who have questioned the door time and age restriction, when it has already been answered every single time somebody else asked it before you. Why ask it again? You can read, I'm not going to insult your intelligence by incinuating that you cannot, but honestly, don't you think somebody else would have passed any plan changes on, if there were any? I'm not pissed, it just bugs me when people find fifty different ways to ask the same question and get the same answer each and every time. And for the record, they probably just told you 21+ and 10:00, because that is their generic answer to the question that they have to answer umpteen times a day. I'm not pissed at you or anything, I just find little things like that annoying. Sorry.

D-Con and Stick Together didn't make the cut.

I think D-Con is kind of cheesy and high school if you ask me. Makes me wonder if the band sincerely tried to get everything to come together or if they said, "This song is just embarrasing guys."

Well I'm in high school so it works out fine for me.

But seriously, I really like D-Con. Especially the clever lyrics.

I think probably the main reason they didn't play "D-Con" is that it was a Don Sergio song.

And Stick Together because it evolved into Leave It All Behind, rather directly.

The Features tend to do that quite a bit...evolving one sing into another version. (Discoteque to Temporary Blues for one and I would even say Exhibit A into Circus or vice versa...whichever came first). The new "Love is Golden" has a passage that sounds like something else but I can't recall at the moment what it reminded me of.

I've always thought the Discotheque into Temp Blues passage was a little overwrought. Sure, I'll admit they lifted a small musical passage, but nothing like Stick Together's lifting of whole verses. Circus predates Exhibit A by at least four years, and the two have very little in common, to my mind. They exist contemporaniously, so the band can't think them to be in linage either.

I thought the same thing. It's the kind of melody that you recognize/remember/know instantly and can't help but sing along with... smile.gif

I was humming "Love is Golden" and I realized that the melody resembles the melody in Pearl Jam's "Parting Ways" which was the closer on Binaural. Now I remember what it reminded me of. The part in particular is the opening of "Standing, like a statue..."

I think they might have something to do with fruits and/or vegetables. They once went on tour with Rind Jelly.

Peal Jam is the new taste sensation sweeping the nation brought to you by Smuckers. If it doesn't say Smuckers it doesn't say Smucker's.

There's a part on Someway Somehow that always reminded me of Pearl Jam's Corduroy. It's the "No need to be alone, I'll never let you down, I'll keep you safe from harm, Someway, somehow." part....basically the chorus...I think its just about the same chord structure as alot of Corduroy or at least the intro. I dont think the features try to sound like other songs, afterall there is only a limited number of chord progressions that are possible in music. anyway, i havent heard that song forever, so I may be off.

So, last night at about 1 in the morning I got to thinking about what I said above, so i pulled out the old peal jam cd and turned on number 8. Brought back memories from my teen years. Anyway, i decided to go ahead and compile this little sound bite thing comparing the features and pearl jam. As I said above, I dont think its intentional, and even if it was, the features have enough of an original work to where it would never be considered infringement. I'll probably take down this clip pretty soon though. But take a listen and see as to why I had been singing pearl jam in my head for the last 20 Features Shows.

Compare

No harm intended. Just my nerdy musical critical listening side showing.

I'm actually not sure if this works.....b/c my roommate's computer bites. I'll restart and be back in a min to edit and try it.

Yeah, it worked. I see what you mean. Musically, they're pretty similar.
