TOPIC: Album 2 tracklist...?
Posted  Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 11:03 PM
Post 1 of 14
With the resurrection of some old standards in the past few months, I've been wondering what the second album will contain. We did the tentative tracklists for the first album (has anyone checked to see who was the most accurate? There are enough statistics nerds on this board to check), so I figure we could do the same for album numero dos. Of course it'll probably be another year or two...or knowing the Features, eight, but uh, as of now...

01. Mosis Ptosis
02. Temporary Blues
03. Hold You Alone
04. Love Is Golden
05. Stagecoach
06. Serious
07. Arcata
08. Damage Is Done
09. Oh My Love
10. God Save Rock & Roll

Okay, this is really jumping the gun since I'm stretching here, but I'm going to continue because I haven't started a thread in ages.

"Ptosis," "Hold," and "Arcata" are the most definite of the ten. "Temporary Blues"' recent resurgence (since the fan-choice show) makes it a near definite at this point. "Damage" and "Stagecoach's" appearing on Matt's hand written setlist has me thinking he either A ) Totally loves those songs again or B ) Knew we would want some rarities and decided to give us the most random of the rarities. I'd like to see "Oh My Love" and "Serious" get some Post-Mahaffey Makeovers, but that's just wishful thinking since Rollum had to ask the band how to start off "Oh My Love" last night. And then there is "God Save" which was such a shoe-in for "Exhibit A," didn't make the cut and disappeared in rapid time.

And another stupid thought: there may eventually be a day when we buy a Features album not knowing a song or any of the songs on it due to either their lack of touring in these parts or Beatles-esque departure to the studio. That'll be a weird time, buying a Features release with no knowledge of the material.

This could be a pretty useless thread...

What a funny thread... thank you!

I think mosis ptosis, hold you alone, and arcata are definitely in as well. The others I'm not so sure about. I LOVE the Mahaffey version of Serious and Darkroom, and think that both should go on the 2nd album- only without a "makeover".

There should be a few ballads as well: Look Out Below would be my top choice.

I was really expecting a new song or two last night as much as they've been on the road

Heaven knows they've got plenty of material to choose from, if they want to go that route. However, despite the bulging backlog of awesome songs, I would not be surprised at all to see very few songs that we've heard before on the next album. More or less what they did last time was just go in the studio and bang out songs that had already been written, arranged, performed, and even recorded before. While that's certainly fine, I think there's something to be said for the adventure of starting with a "blank canvas" at the beginning of the recording process, and letting the album take on a life of its own as it is being formed and fashioned out of the dust. I think it can result in an album that is more cohesive and more of an entity all its own, as opposed to just a collection of songs. I think it can totally change how a song is written/arranged/produced/recorded when it is being created specifically within the context of a recording session as opposed to working it up for the purpose of playing it in concert.

I'm sure there will be some material that we've heard before on the album, but I will be really surprised if it's like the last one, where we've already heard every song on the album before.

I'm pretty sure "God Save Rock'n'Roll" is dead. But you never know...

I was pretty sure Damage is Done was dead, so I wouldn't be surprised by much of anything at this point.

JC, I hope this is a full-time return to the board for you.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

I'd love to see the following. At the present, I'd most like to see God Save Rock & Roll, Damage is Done, & Look Out Below.

01. Action
02. Mosis Ptosis
03. Temporary Blues
04. Hold You Alone
05. Love Is Golden
06. Look Out Below
07. Dark Room
08. Arcata
09. Damage Is Done
10. God Save Rock & Roll

The question of the second album comes up in my mind some as well. The primary question is when they record it. If it is a two-week stop from the tour to record an album this fall, then all of these guesses could be pretty accurate. If they wait until summer 2006, then I don't think any of these songs could be labeled as definite.

The only guess that I would add is that they might put a re-tooled Thursday on the second album.

I definitely want to see some "Love is Golden" and "Damage is Done" action on # 2.

I think if any Mahaffey tracks are on there, he would have to do the whole album. Just a couple of songs that have been through the Matt Mahaffey overproduction machine would sound out of place, I think.
remember that its all in your head.

I think Thursday would make a good hidden track.

The primary question is when they record it.
The Features will begin recording the new album this summer in some far-away land.

If this is the truth, then I need to get a lotto ticket. I also predict that the second album will not be as good as the first.

aw, come on. there are still lots and lots of good songs to choose from. And I think if they would record the next album live it would sound better than Exhibit A (not that it sounds particularly bad). Lightning in a bottle.

Yes, there are plenty of strong songs, but not enough to fill an album like they did for Exhibit A. I also don't think that it would be as cohesive.

I can imagine that the band will bust out a few new tunes on the next album. As far as older songs go, I'd like to see "Look Out Below", "Serious", "Don't Lie to Me (yeah right)" and "33 1/3." They could put out a box set of rarities and B-sides at this point.
