TOPIC: Bonnaroo Traffic: a warning

For those driving to see the Features tomorrow night or at Music Midtown in Atlanta this weekend, be advised that traffic will most likely be insane between Murfreesboro and Chattanooga on I24. All the hippies going to Bonnaroo will be forming a solid line of VW minibusses and bugs radiating out miles and miles from Manchester, TN. The show starts Friday, but doors open early on Thursday and many many hippies will be eager to get there so they can get a head start on their high (for those who actually plan to wait). It will probably be pretty bad off and on until monday afternoon.

As JC suggested, I'm considering taking Highway 70 from Murfreesboro to McMinnville and then 50/56/41 to Chattanooga. You might want to consider this, too.

Good luck!

I was just gonna ask about alternative routes. I just looked at the atlas and was wondering if anyone has actually gone this way before? Is the route well marked? I am traveling alone and leaving at around 10pm tomorrow and really don't want to get lost in the country.

Oooh, I wouldn't suggest trying to navigate that at night. But it can surely be done.

You could, I suppose, drive south to Birmingham on I-65, then cut over to Atlanta on I-20. That'd take about 5 hours.

Yeah, JC's right-- that's a pretty twisty, not-so-well-lit drive. I'm only considering it because I'll be driving in the middle of the day.

I had considered taking 65 and then cutting over. I was just wondering where in Atlanta that would put me out at? I have only come in from 75 before. I think I am just gonna flip a coin seeing as how each route has serious drawbacks.

Thanks for the help!

Well, you would hit I-285, so you could take that to wherever. Or you could just keep going on 20 and go into downtown Atlanta.

When we drove to Chattanooga yesterday we went highway 231 from Murfreesboro(2nd Murfreesboro Exit) to Shelbyville. Right after the KFC turn left on 41 South. Go throught Tullahoma and make a left of 55. After you drive over the overpass make an immediate right on AFB (Air Force Road) and then veer left 100 yards down. You will hit I-24 on the other side of Manchester about 15 minutes later.

It adds about 30 minutes to your trip, but from what I hear it was worth it yesterday.

I saw no traffic whatsoever until I reached exit 283 50 miles north of Atlanta.
