TOPIC: Bumblebee Performed Live

Post 1 of 14
I'm a huge fan of the song Bumblebee from the Beginnings EP. Yet, of the dozen or so shows I've seen the last few years, they have not played it. I've heard that they played it at the Boro at least once.

Is there something about this song in particular that is so hard to pull off live? Is there a personal reason why they don't play it? Are they not pleased with it? What's the story?

at the boro, it appeared that only matt and rollum actually knew the song... it's was funny to hear a drummer call out the key. laugh.gif

hmm.... interesting

just to get off-topic, i noticed that you consider yourself a brit-pop addict. i, too, am gravitating that way these days. have you heard Ash's "free all angels"? it's quite good. very chheesy and excessively poppy and not too intelligent-- but very enjoyable nonetheless. i'm also way into radiohead, coldplay, and travis if anyone cares.

i've listened to ash a bit, but i wasn't too terribly impressed... i'll give them another listen.

lately i've been into suede, mansun, and ocean colour scene, as well as the better known oasis, verve, blur, and stone roses.

Thanks for the tip! I'm only vaugely (sp?) familiar with some of those bands. I'll look into it...

As for Ash, their album 1977 holds a special place in my heart, but I'll admit it's a bit too dated and somewhat immature. Some of the new stuff really grabs me, though, like "You Are a Shinning Light" and "There's a Star". "Candy" is also very smooth-- especially the video.

Anyone out there have the scoop on Bumblebee?

The only reason they played it at the Boro for the one and only time was because I requested it.

the reason that they don't play it live is because it requires other instruments that they don't usually use. they improvised at the other show when they actually performed it. just cause ROLLUM said so. he's the boss. tongue.gif
maybe i could sing along
to your neverending songs,
i'm just looking for some fun

OK. As far as I know, no one in the band except Matt played on that recording (as well as 'Stark White Stork Approaching'). I believe that those two songs were just Matt and Brian Bottcher (and whoever played the strings and did the 'kid' vocals). Thus, Bumblebee has never been a 'band' song. But for some reason, they did play it at the Boro on 5-2-2002. It was quite aparent that Roger and Parrish weren't very familar with the song.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.
