2 Skinnee J's
The Features
Venus Envy

i am replying to my own message, but whatever. i hadn't heard of 2 skinnee j's, so i looked them up on allmusic.com and this is what i found:

'The 2 Skinnee J's are a rap-metal band that draw influences from such similarly minded bands as 311 and Rage Against the Machine. Where Rage is political, the 2 Skinnee J's are party animals, more concerned with rocking the house than elevating consciousness.'

Ugh. The Features are sure to fit in with these guys.

Other upcoming Dancing in the District shows: blues traveller, cake, cracker, they might be giants, better than ezra, superdrag, steve earle, etc...

Yeah, a friend(?) talked me into seeing 2 Skinnee J's a couple of years ago. I didn't know anything about them except that they had a terrible name- come to find out, it fit the music perfectly... I left during the first song.

I heard that the Features originally had the 8:00 slot on July 25, but were moved to July 3 and now have the 7:00 slot. That probably has zero significance, but I thought I'd just pass along the info I got.

Not that I have any credibility here, but I saw 2 Skinnee J's at the very first River Stages, and it was awesome. I barely remember anything about the music, but they had one guy all pimped out just standing on stage with his arms crossed looking pissed the whole time. He didn't play anything or even move. I think they were kind of Beastie Boys-esque, but I really don't remember.

The Features show will be the only one I go to this year. I can't handle it any more. I would like to see Cake, though...

musically, 2 skinnee j's are definitely pretty lame. but they've got a moog player whos got one of those keyboard/guitar things. and they put on a pretty damn good show. i'm a fan of any band that incorporates synchronized jumping into their set.

The first time I saw the Features (98ish? pre-rollum), I remember quite a bit of syncronized jumping. If it is done in toungue-in-cheek fashion, I can defend back-to-back guitar playing as well.

This isn't going to be the 'real Features experience' that a first timer should get, in my opinion. It will probably be a relatively short show and in a venue 100X bigger than normal. However, if you're an experienced Features head, I think this will definitely be a treat. I guess we might as well get used to seeing the Features with 1000+ people anyway.

Any Features show would be good for a first timer. It will still be one of the best shows they've seen and then they will want the 'true' Features experience even more. I just hope it doesn't get rained out this year.

I don't know how familiar you are with Nashville, but basically they set up a huge (almost ampitheatre-sized) stage in front of the Cumberland River on First Avenue, downtown. It is a free concert, so tons of people (2000-7500 depending on the headliner on a normal night, I'd say) show up. Usually the sound is pretty good there, but sometimes bands that are used to playing in clubs around town have a tough time translating to a big stage where the majority of the crowd has no idea who they are. I will give The Features the benefit of the doubt, however.

The first time I ever saw The Features was on the side stage there, and I thought they were really good, but that was way back in the day...pre-rollum and all.

If you go, make sure you have plenty of time and money for parking. It is a huge bitch and what has kept me away from DitD the past year or two.

Enough info?

All tom foolery aside, maybe we could ward off some of the unpleasantness of DitD by all watching the show together. I realize that most of you already know each other, but I think it'd be nice to have some sort of 'Offical Features Message Board Meeting.' Dancing in the District would be a good choice for the following reasons:

A. It's the only Features show for quite some time so most people will come out to feed their addiction.

B. None of the members of this board will be playing in the bands that open for the Features.

C. By sticking together, we can isolate ourselves from the freaks... or at least the freaks that aren't there to see the Features.

Ever seen the movie PCU where one guy is going to watch a band and has the band's t-shirt on? His friend says, 'You're wearing the t-shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy.' Just a random thought. Either way is fine with me. Even without the t-shirts, we will be up there together. I would venture to say that we will be hard to miss.

Hey, anyway, this thing is gonna be cool. Instead of wearing Features shirts we could all wear shirts from some other, random band... like The Strokes. Or we could do something else. I heard a legend that many thousands of years ago, members of the Spongebath Records message board wore candy necklaces to recognize one another.

aww, i love the sensitive and artistic side of you. its funny that you would know the original version of the number and not the simpson's version smile.gif stephaniew i know your question was directed towards lw, but i would love to talk musicals with you. my best friend's parents were soooo generous and nice and bought us front row tickets to les mis in nyc for graduation. we were so close you could see them spitting! it totally rocked!!! everyone should see a broadway musical at least once. it is amazing.

Ahh Mindy. Have you ever seen Phantom of the Opera? I saw it on Broadway a couple of years ago, and it was SO great. I have seen Les Mis on stage, too. I have read the book, and then I watched the musical. Same with Phantom of the Opera. I agree with you...everyone must see at least one Broadway show in their lifetime.

yeah , they were dangerous. If the fabric frayed at the edges you were slamming the sharp metal edge straight into your wrist. Still pretty cool, though. I bet the inventor got the idea from a tape measure.

Back to the origianal topic (Dancin' in the district, for those keeping score). I went to the innaugural show last night, and let's just say that I hope they can get their shit together by July 3rd. First thing that happens is they blow a fuse which takes almost an hour to fix. You'd think they'd be prepared for something like that.

Next, the sound. The first two songs of every band sounded like shit.

The lights. At least the first two songs of every band had no lights. None. By the time Superdrag and Cake played, it was completely dark out, so you literally could not see them, and I was pretty close to the stage.

The security. There was an extremely drunk redneck with no shirt who was running around trying to stir up shit. No problem so far, but then he started sexually, then physically assaulting the girl he was with. People I knew went to get security, but it took them at least 10 minutes to get there. Dude could have killed her by then if he wanted to.

Finally, fire. A huge building within 50 yards of DitD completely burned down. With all the closed roads, traffic, and people there, it took the fire department at least an hour to get there. If the wind was blowing in a different direction, there would be about 10,000 people with black lungs right now.

Overall, the show was decent. All the bands were good, but the organization of the show was God awful. Just a warning for those of you planning to attend for The Features.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

First CD: Ace of Base- The Sign
First time to kiss a boy: In my living room, 8th grade.
Only career move: Food Lion (unfortunately)
CD I do own, but wont listen to: Will Smith - Big Willie Style
Most embarassing moment: You all should feel so special for me sharing this, but I am in a good mood, so what the hell? I used to wear glasses, and I was walking along in a department store. Then some cool windsuits (remember those?) caught my eye. Well i was still walking, but I turned my head to check out the prices. That is when i ran right into a metal pole that was in the middle of the aisle.  Let's just say that I hit it so hard that I broke my glasses, and I fell back onto the floor. My mom even laughed after asking if I was alright. I'm laughing right now while I type this. Isn't it funny how you can look back on embarassing things and think about how stupid you were? I mean, it's embarassing enough that I liked windsuits, but the fact that I ran into a pole in a heavily populated dept. store makes it even more humorous.

OK, I have just looked at the website for Dancin' (Skankin', Death, Underage Drinkin', etc.) in the District, and who wants to share their opinions about the other bands playing? I have never seen any of them before, but I have heard mp3s. So, do share your comments. I have read the ones in the beginning of this topic that involved 2 Skinnee J's, and that doesn't sound very promising. What about Venus Envy or White Animals? What are they like?

Venus Envy: White female rapper/nu-metalist from Nashville.  Very angry, very in-your-face, very riot grrrl. Um, I don't really care for her, but some people do. Her website: http://www.venusnv.com

White Animals: Nashville rock band that have been around almost as long as Jason and the Scorchers (a long time!). I've always heard that they're great, but I've never seen them.

First of all, welcome back Jamie. It seems like its been a while since you've posted, or is it just me? Anyway, I think The White Animals have been around even longer than The Scorchers. When I was 11 (11 years ago) I took guitar lessons from a guy that had quit the White Animals years before I even started taking lessons. I think they had their 20th anniversary last year although there is only one original member left. They are allegedly a punk band, by the way.

Ahh. Fla-Vor-Ice. If there was one thing I was ever addicted to, that was it. I crave those things. I suppose I am still addicted. My favorite flavors- pink and blue for sure. Good call, lw.

Best thing I ate today: Many, many Fla-Vor-Ice

otter pops are far superior to fla-vor-ice. they tasted better & every package had a cute otter on it. i don't know if you could get them in the south though; i remember them from my youthful days in california. any of you know of otter pops?

i, too, am a huge fan of otter pops. i agree that they are lightyears ahead of fla-vor-ice and similar types of popsicles. i liked that otter pops kind of burned the back oy my throat.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

Too bad they don't allow coolers at Dancin' in the District. Otherwise, I'd bring a couple hundred freezer pops for us to enjoy while rockin' out with the Features.
