TOPIC: Features Album tracklisting
Posted  Monday, April 28, 2003 at 9:43 AM
Post 1 of 33
with the band entering the studio, i thought that it was be a very timely topic for everyone to post their dream tracklisting for the album. i have come up with two different tracklistings: one if a label is involved, and one if it is self-released....

(if there is a label involved, then the tracklisting would go something like this.....)

1. circus
2. the way it's meant to be
3. walk you home
4. dark room
5. the beginning
6. speed of 33
7. leave it all behind
8. see you thru
9. exorcising demons
10. a million ways to sing the blues
11. me and the skirts
12. exhibit a
13. buffalo head
( i took the liberty of acknowledging the fact that if there is indeed a label involved in the process, then i would think that the band would possibly rerecord some songs. i like to think of katrina and the waves (kimberly rew's post-soft boys band) in a situation like this....now i dont like the song "walking on sunshine", but i think the path they took with recording their major label debut was an interesting one. when they signed to capitol back in 83 or 84, rather than recording a brand new album, they decided to rerecord the best tracks from their first two independently released albums and make a new album out of it.....just a thought)

(if it is a self released album, then the tracklisting would go something like this.......)

1. circus
2. the way its meant to be
3. me and the skirts
4. leave it all behind
5. dark room
6. a million ways to sing the blues
7. exhibit a
8. someway, somehow
9. exorcising demons
10. blow it out
11. the idea of growing old
12. look out below
13. buffalo head
(i know i left out "god save rock and roll", but i think it would be a good b-side. rather than an album track.....)

i only put 13 tracks on each tracklisting, but i would of course be very very happy with more than that...it just sounded like a good number

....now i dont like the song "walking on sunshine",
Oh, yes you do. I know. Don't lie. Okay, well maybe he just used to sing it to annoy me because he knows how wretched I think it is.

But, about the album...I seriously can't think of anything after reading Ray Davie's post. Those track listings sound pretty perfect to me.

the only thing i like about it is the fact that there is a former soft boy in the band....and you're correct, sadie, i did sing it just to annoy you.... wink.gif

I thought this would come up, and so for all of you fans who are newer to the Features, I will provide a two-pronged warning label:

1) If the material recorded is actually used to produce a full-length album for once, I will be suprised if the album is released by winter/spring 2004.

2) I've received 2 Fluid Ounces records ahead of time since finding them in 2000. With both of them, I always get the album and will be a little let down by what is not on the album. I will also not be surprised if the Features album does this also.

I was reading on of the reviews for The Features EP and he was talking about being so eager to hear more he called Spongebath to see when they would be recording next and was informed that they just wrapped up a full length album. How long ago was that?

1998 or 2000. Take your pick. (but it was probably the former if he was reviewing the original EP)

As the Features' catalog has grown, this has gotten increasingly harder to do. There are just too many incredible songs to choose only 10-14. I think that the album should definitely have the following on it:

-Leave it all Behind

Also, for my personal enjoyment, I wish that one or more of the following would be on it:

-Temporary Blues
-Burma
-Harold
-Don't Liiiiiiiie to Me
-Situation Gone Bad

Anything on top of those things would be ICING on the CAKE!
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

There's no way we'll get thirteen tracks from the Features. We'll be lucky to get ten. Those ten will be (in no particular order):

That's the Way It's Meant to Be
Me & the Skirts
The Idea of Growing Old
Blow It Out
See You Thru
Someway, Somehow
Exhibit A
Bring on the Night
There's a Million Ways to Sing the Blues
Leave It All Behind

you never know. their songs are all relatively short, so ten songs would probably amount to a 30-minute album. i bet it'll be longer than 30 minutes, but no longer than 45.

i heard from a good source that the band will more than likely record 18 or so songs and pick 12 or 13 out of that group to go on the album.

I hope not. I want a more upbeat album including songs like (in no particular order):

Dark Room
The Way It's Meant to Be
The Beginning
Circus
Leave it All Behind
Me & the Skirts
See You Through
A Million Ways to Sing the Blues
Walk You Home
Buffalo Head

I would allow time for one slower song, maybe.

However, I care very little about flow, and I like action-packed fun when it comes to my music. dry.gif

I seriously doubt they'd re-record any of the songs on The Beginning. From what I've seen, they usually tend to record only the very latest songs. Therefore, I don't expect to see many older songs like "Circus" and "Dark Room." To make my prediction more specific, I think we'll only get one song that was written before spring, 2002.

I think we'll have some pleasant surprises with what is recorded. I think Circus will be on there (the "ideal single" thread hinted that the band was keen to record it again), and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Harold recorded, since it is clear that the band has recently been reworking it, but for what purpose?

circus is one of those songs that everyone should hear. if and when the cd hits mainstream, it would be a shame if all the newbies never heard circus... besides, its such a great song, definately in the top 10 and if the purpose of this cd is to gain recognition, i can't think of any logical reason as to why it would be excluded. true, I don't think the cd should be full of rerecorded old songs that have already been released, but circus definately has some mileage left on it.

I agree with you Ray. I think that it will be mostly new songs. But I think the band will have a surprise or two for us...

i like your list, ray, but i personally would probably cut out "speed of 33" and replace "a million..." with "bring on the night" (i'd also have to rearrange that because then you'll have 3 double-time songs in a row, which might be too much )
if in fact, this is the album that introduces the nation to the features, it should have their best songs from their entire career. this is an insanely good tracklist, everything is a single. it'll be impossible to ignore. the only drawback is that it may prove to be impossible for them to ever top this record.

circus is a good opener, but it'd be a pretty good album closer too if you think about it.

While I would like to see some older songs (GSRnR, Thursday, Darkroom, Kari-Anne, Jurley!), this is more of a prediction than a "dream" track listing. I think an album should start off solid with the second track being the hit single, start to level off, hit you with an injection of pure rock (see track 09), throw in a tender song early (see track 05) and late (see track 10), and end strong.

01. Circus
02. Leave It All Behind
03. Me and The Skirts
04. There's a Million Ways...
05. The Idea of Growing Old
06. Blow it Out
07. Situation Gone Bad (make that Bring on the Night)
08. Exhibit A
09. That's the Way It's Meant to Be
10. Harold
11. See You Thru
12. Someway, Somehow
Hidden Track... Stick Together (aka LIAB reprise)

I know, my idea for a bonus track is genius. You don't have to tell me that. Well, okay, go ahead.

Ditto, and definitely the track order is ideal. Good work! Although I might substitute GSRNR for #9. I just don't have much love for "That's the Way...", but it's probably just because I (sadly) haven't been around for its blossoming.

You'll come around. I did. I agree with whoever said that GSRnR would be an awesome B-side (TF? YDDD?). I don't really see it fitting into an album well for some reason.

I just think it would be a fitting closer. But then again, I believe that the Features should also be a band that concentrates on its singles as well and actually puts songs on them instead of lame live versions or DJ remixes. This is one area where I feel like the Features should follow in the footsteps of Oasis and actually put great songs as B-sides. Plus, the Features already have a wealth of songs and, if the legal matters worked out, we could see most of the Mahaffey sessions as B-sides. That would work out great.
