TOPIC: Features Chalking
Posted  Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at 9:14 AM
Post 1 of 35
As I was walking across campus today (admiring the chalkings that IWantElvis, Sexy Sadie, DigsySlattery, HaveSomeSoma and myself had worked so very hard on last night), I noticed that someone had defaced all of the chalkings that we did across campus. (however they did not touch the "let it be" style chalking that Digsy worked on in Peck Hall) Apparently, MTSU officials have decided to make it a criminal offense to chalk on any part of MTSU's campus (mainly the sidewalks). This is very uncool.....

So I guess that this was the last chalking in support of the best band around today........Hopefully, we can come up with other, more legal ways of supporting the band besides just going to shows......

No one better touch the one under Peck Hall. That sucker was a doozy to do...

I guess MTSU is back on my suck list, even after the amazing "Freedom Sings" program. Does anyone know if official flyers are going to be posted on MTSU's campus? If not, I'd be down with doing that to replace the chalkings.

I don't see how chalking is vandalism since the rain takes it away...

I'd bet the Greek organizations have a fit when they hear that they can't chalk for their parties...

maybe it's just me, but i think it stands to reason that tuition paying students should be free to chalk the sidewalks regardless of how any administrators feel about it. it's just as much our sidewalk as it is theirs and without students it would deteriorate to shit. calling it graffiti is ridiculous. it's more of a temporary tatoo.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

I've heard that chalk can actually deteriorate a sidewalk. Of course, that was probably a nasty rumor started by THE MAN.

I don't see the problem with sticking to flyers hung around campus and banners hung from dormroom/apartment windows.

Funny this should come up... I was at Digital Planet today and saw a flyer for the features show. Very cool (first features flyer i've ever seen) I was wondering who makes them, and who distributes them. I'd be more than happy to help you guys out next time you decide to plaster mtsu, or any other place for that matter, with publicity. I hate MTSU anyway, so screw the no chalk rule, its not like the campus is all that spectacular to begin with.

To help with fliers, talk to featuresgirl or the mysterious you. Either one can tell you when and where and all that...(they always seem in the know about that stuff, at least)

funny you should mention this..... i was just about to put something up about this for the fall shows...and hopefully i will get more responses than before...
i'm going to be in charge of doing all the posters and stuff from now on... rory and i and some others have been working on it but he has more important stuff to do in relation to the band so i will be doing it from now on. it would be good for me to have a solid group of people in each area to commit to putting up posters for the shows and then i can just get them done and get into contact with those people. i know havesomesoma has done it before along with sinasugarsick and a couple others. if anyone definitely wants to be involved, PM me and tell me stuff like where you live, what kinds of places you know to put up posters and we'll figure out a way to get them distributed instead of just a couple people doing it all themselves.
also, if people want to work on designing them PM me too, and then we can work out how to get that design on a poster. the most important thing is that the date and venue and band name are able to be seen really well.. sometimes it's hard to see the date or venue and then there's no point. anyway, anyone who wants to help can and hopefully we can get these done soon once we find out about more dates. sometimes we make them for other cities too and send them off. so just let me know! and thanks in advance.
maybe i could sing along
to your neverending songs,
i'm just looking for some fun

Well, this sidewalk chalk rumor is only half true. Administrators don't care if students use chalk as a medium for advertisement... but the catch is this, It has to be advertising an event that is sponsored by a student organization. I couldn't find the story on Sidelines website, but I know it was run this summer..
so now you know.. and knowing is half the battle

poor pretty, pretty chalkings. it just makes me mad that they decide to do this after our best chalkings yet. i mean, c'mon, one was crime scene-themed. i didn't know "the man" was also a blue raider. i guess ourselves and the "sXe kickball" gang are out of luck... sad.gif

and of course i'm more than willing to help out again with anything at all, featuresgirl.... smile.gif

Ah to see things come to fruition.....Have someone involve the radio station and sponsor the show? Then utilize the stations call letters to validate sponsorship whilst you chalk the place up? Brilliant!!!!

maybe in the future we could add a few of the frat's lettering to the chalkings. it seems that as of late they have bigger things to worry about (like paying rent for those ugly houses) than to worry about people associating them with local concerts...

I did indeed get to admire Digsy's caricatures this afternoon... mostly intact, however someone had trounced over Rollum with undoubtedly wet shoes... the other three were superb.

dont count on that.......WMTS can barely even get their own DJs to come do their own shows and come to their own benefits.......and besides there are few features supporters at the station

I am sure of that Ray....apathy is rampant...but all you need is a signature, an ok to slap the so-called sponsorship on it, they don't have to do shit....use them like a tool.....to fix things so they work just right......smile.gif

Another point is that MTSU is a state school, meaning it's paid for by tax money, so guess who REALLY owns it? We do. I would speak up. I attended UTK and we never had issues like that.
