Rory told me they were going to be recording in some guy's basement studio, He assured me it would be professional, though. he told me the guy's name, but I can't remember it since I had no idea who it was. Oh yeah, and he said that the recordings were going to be mostly new songs and about three old songs. As for what they define as new and old, I have no idea... hope that helped...

OK, so I get to thinking:

Matt told me and then Parrish and Roger told that radio lady that they were doing 85% new songs and the rest old.

Soo...whipping out the trusty calculator, if 3 old songs make up 15% of what their recording, then they must be recordiiing...

>sound of rusty gears turning as I whisper numbers to myself and type into calculator<

Fifty-five new songs!!!!!!  WOW!!!!!!  Maybe we'll get a double album or boxed set!

I'm kidding. Matt also told me that they had about 20 songs to record, and then they'd see what they had when determining what would actually go on the album.

Come to think of it (in the true fashion of changing the subject of a thread on a whim), it seems like it's been quite a while since any real bands put out a double album. I seriously can't think of any since Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness back in late '95. Am I overlooking one?

double albums cost twice as much to make, and they sell half as much ie. the record lables lose lots of money. too bad. i like double albums but most these days are greatest hits cds.

55 new songs? Is Matt suddenly Rivers Cuomo? I hope not. As for how that figure was derived...YaDaDaDa

I don't know but I am so fuckin pumped about this full length. i just hope they don't leave out some of my favorite songs. they have a really big catalogue and i am scared that some of my favorite tracks will get cut from the final mix. and as I have said before, the cd release party will be the best day of life.

-Paul Westerberg, as discussed elsewhere on this board, just released a double album.
-NIN's last album, 1999's 'Fragile', was a double.
-In 1998, Prince released a QUADRUPLE album ('Crystal Ball').  Who else could do this but Prince?
-And who could forget 2Pac's 1996 double album (and the first-ever rap double album) 'All Eyez on Me'?

But you're right, I think 'Mellon Collie...' was the last double album by a band.

Would Flaming Lips' 'Zaireeka' from 97 fit into the quadruple album category, or just the REALLY WEIRD category?

wow jamie, i'm telling roadie that in your citing of double albums you left out the old and new testament.

i'd also like to mention (aware that i'm losing credibility, if i ever had it) that the 2-pac/bone thugs double album 'art of war' is fucking great.

I'm sorry, freezetag, I just forgot about it, no offense intended. It's a better album than any of those others listed, except Mellon Collie, in my opinion.

Is this the thing that they did that was a 'car stereo symphony?'  I remember hearing about a project the Lips released where all of the discs were meant to be started and played simultaneously to produce this 'symphony.' Whatever it was, it would definitely go in the 'really weird' category.

It is a symphony of sorts, I guess. The concerts that followed were done where audience members were arranged with stereos and conducted like a symphony.

Speaking of the Flaming Lips anyway, has anyone heard any dates for the summer tour? I really want to see them again. The new album comes soon.

The Flaming Lips had the Car symphony AND the aforementioned album that was 4 CD's to be played simultaenously. I always wanted to check it out, but I would have had to borrow some CD players from somewhere

I've been to parties where we'd play the album in its entirety. I got a copy of the album and then got a mixed copy of the 4 CDs combined, so I've hurt the experiment by being able to casually listen to it on one stereo.

Mindylieu, to most of the world...

Phish = a giant bundle of hippie counterculture stereotypes not based on the music at all

There's not much you or I can do to change that. Phish will forever be right there beside MC Hammer and Milli Vanilli as another easy target for Daily Show jokes.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to really be mean- it was a cheap shot. Cheap shots come from insecurity, which stems from the fact that I'm a recovering Phish fan myself. I used to go to shows but the phans became way too irritating, as did the self-indulgent & aimless style of music. But that's just my opinion...I still think they're decent musicians.

that flaming lips record is amazing, although its quite a hassle to listen to (unless you happen to own four stereos and have four arms with which to simultaneously start them all)
anyways, back to the original topic...i was watching my features video from 1996 (lucys record shop, with caesers glass box) and i was wondering if anyone had a recording of the song 'extension cord'?
my favorite features song of all time. besides maybe 'see you through'

that is too cute (the recovering part...)yeah i agree about the phans. uggh. i enjoy their music on cd. i dont get fucked up enough to enjoy an hour of mindless jamming. i like a song, and then i want it to end. i dont like it when i cant tell if a song is over or not, or when i forget what song they were playing. by the way, didn't mean to sound so defensive. it is good to have an opinion.

yeah, im not down with jam bands; i like good solid songs that begin and end. maybe if i started smoking more pot then i would like them . . .
i have a copy of extension chord but i got it from some guy who got it from the computer, so i don't know where you could find it. but that song really fucking rules. i would love to hear it live.

or maybe if you just had an open mind you would like them - I'm willing to bet if I sat some of you down who have bashed jam bands and told you these records I'm about to play are highly recommended by members of the coolest indie band (fill in the band of your choice) and then I proceeded to play different music you've never heard mixed in with some jam band studio albums and you had to tell me if you liked it or not many of you would say yea I like that not knowing you were telling me that you enjoyed a jam band – but if you here the jam band label you automatically place in stereotypes and say you hate it

excited would be the word to describe.....a full lenght is just what the doctor ordered....plus....will the stuff from the 98 sessions and mahaffey sessions ever get officaially released? i know most of the songs from the missippi album have gone into retirement but alot of those songs done with mahaffey are still played live....it really doesnt matter because no matter what is on it it will be good....
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

right on bman!
as much as i like phish and think they are brilliant, creative and insane, i would have to say i like wsp the best. why don't you get wsp keith? i like that their jams don't last an hour(just long enough), they have awesome percussion (the brazillian in me enjoys that) and JB's voice. man this board is starting to sound like a jam band msg board.

When I saw WSP, they had a jam that was at least 30 minutes, which Phish can (sometimes) get away with since they are capable musicians, but when Widespread does it, it is just two notes cleverly disguised by a volume pedal.

Other things that I don't like about WSP:
-They don't have any good songs.
-They don't have any good albums.
-They have a percussion player and he sucks.
-Their singer.
-Unless you are a drummer, there is no sitting in rock and roll.
-Their fans (except the two of yous of course).

yeah, good save.
well, the jams i have seen were percussion jams and that is fine by me. you can play drums all day and i wont get bored. as far as sitting in rock and roll-come on, the guy is getting old and is a little overweight. and stoned out of his mind. give him a break!

oh yeah. i promised myself i would try to stop posting about jam bands. sorry.

i don't have a closed mind about any music. i embrace all members of the musican community (except pop stars) i have heard wsp and phish bc alot of my friends listen to them. someone has sat me down and was like, 'here is some good music for you' and i said, 'eh, i don't really like it'. im not knocking people who do like it, whatever makes you feel good, but this is a personal opinion, not an objective stereotype reflex.

Ghostflower (gallantly trying to stay on topic) -- Don't expect to see the Mahaffey sessions or Miss album hit the light of day. They are pretty available now as the fanbase here grows with this message board and more live shows. It would be hard since they have no label.

Anything that either of those albums would come close to accomplishing will be more than solved by a full-length album that includes the newer songs they're doing now.

I think the stuff they have now is the best stuff they've produced, and it should be their focus.

Oh yeah, I'd rather do needle drugs than listen to Phish or WSP.
