On Monday, November 24th, Steve Lamacq is doing his monthly radio documentary. It is a 30 minuute radio show on the new Southern music profiling My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, and The Features . If anyone remembers when there was a British woman with a mic interviewing people at the Inferno show, well she was producing this documentary. I believe it is airing at 4:30 our time, 10:30 UK time on Monday. You can listen online if you go to:

Lamacq's show airs from 8 PM - 12 AM... so that would be 2 PM - 6 PM here. So I guess the Features' portion will run at 4:30 PM here.

I'll make a recording of it and share it as needed. However, the BBC's site is full of links to recent shows so we'll all probably be able to grab a copy of Steve's show on Monday evening.

Hello,

I have been around here for a while but this is the first time I have ever posted, I know you dont know me but I am not a jerk so do not be a jerk to me. Please.

Anyway I talked to the English lady at the inferno show and she briefly interviewed me about what she kept referring to as "southern rock" (I do not know of a better term so that will have to work) bands like kings of leon and my morning jacket who are evidently getting pretty big in the UK. The best question she asked is why do so many bands in the south have members with beards, a question to which I still have no suitable response.

The point of this post is to try to get a recording of the show or to find out when it will be broadcast again.

I also apologize for the length of this message

thanks

Wow, they read an E-mail (I think) on the air happy about The Features' publicity, but thought De Novo Dahl desserved it even more and were the best thing in Nashville right now. Something to that effect.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

pretty cool documentary, though i could've standed to hear more from matt and some other features. ah well, the features don't fall into the category of "southern rock" anyway in my opinion.

It was a nice little documentary - about 30 minutes long. Quite a few quotes from Matt about religion, country music, and life in Sparta. There was even one quote from Roger. The thing definitely gave more weight to the Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket, but that's understandable.

Did ya'll hear Lamacq give De Novo Dahl a plug at the end? Holla!

that was my friend sharon from london who sent him that email.. she was talking to me while it was on and she works for a radio station in london. she said the features are starting to get a real buzz going and that they're always on the radio and she's hearing more about them all the time. she said she was going to email him, but we both didnt' expect him to say something about it right away! she really likes DND, and was trying to just give him more suggestions, not trying to take away from the Features.
i wish they had done a lot more about the features. and i wish rollum and parrish would've spoken too..... but i'm glad that they were on there!

Just listen to the show for Nov 24th. There was a small soundclip with Matt making jokes about Sparta in the first hour of the show. The special itself is at 21:15.

i'm not sure about all of them, but i do know that most of the ep is played, especially now that it's been released in the UK on fierce panda.

some friends of mine have heard 'the beginning' 'two by two' and 'walk you home' on the radio
and the uk ep is sold out on the fierce panda website, cause some of them tried to buy it.

This little special has made me quite giddy. Although I feel that there was way too much time devoted to Kings of Leon (who less than impressed me @ the Strokes), it was just nice to hear Matt and Roger talk over snippets of "Two By Two." Just...thrilling...I'm sure when the album is released, there will be a plethora of press.

Hello! I am 'That British Lady' who was asking questions outside The Inferno, and who then went and made the documentary.

Did any of you spot yourselves talking?? I used 2 or 3 people that I spoke to that night...

I'm glad some of you got to hear it going out live... it's now up online to hear any time you want! HERE!

You're right that most of the piece featured Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket, but those bands are MUCh bigger here in the UK at the moment... But I did squeeze in as much of The Features as I possibly could.

I also was very careful never to say thet The Features are 'southern Rock'. they're not. I was trying to prove a point that just cause these guys (in all the bands) come from Tennessee and Kentucky doesn't mean they're hicks!

Anyway. I hope you enjoy/d it... There's a wee army of us here in the UK that are shouting about The Features. Including Steve Lamacq (the DJ) who quite rightly thinks they're brilliant.

Love from
Jude x

p.s. I don't agree with that girl who's email he read out! DND are ok... but I'd bet any money that won't do much over here... Sorry DND fans! sad.gif

hmmm, I beg to differ. Both The Features AND DND are just what Britain wants and needs at the moment - or at least they will be once the press stops touting the mediocre rock bands they are currently (Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket included).

I think both The Features and DND have such a distinct indiepop sound to them which Britain is just crying out for at the moment. There's a lot lacking in the scene at the moment.... I think 2004 could be a promising year for bands of this ilk cool.gif

Seriously, though, excellent job on the piece! We're all very excited to know that others are finally getting to hear our best kept secret. These guys deserve as much good press as far and wide as they can get it.

Okay, I finally finished listening to the whole thing and I'm even more excited. Yes, they didn't talk much about The Features' music per se, but they did play a generous amount of song clips (which is especially good when you consider they only have the EP to draw from). Matt was quoted heavily during the "southern small-town lifestyle" segment, which is really cool. (Does anyone else find it eerie to hear so many words coming out of Matt's mouth in one breath?)

I think it's funny how the show went out of its way to define a "southern sound" because it's a concept that I personally have never really considered. Did people in Seattle really think about "grunge" in the early 90s? Did people in Detroit think about "garage rock" 5 years ago? Maybe not. It's also funny that they had what I consider to be 3 very musically diverse bands as examples of this new breed of "southern rock". I don't fault them one bit for using the term, but I'm still having a hard time coming up with a true definition that incorporates Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, and our beloved Features.

Still, an excellent, informative documentary!

I think what this docu tried to argue, and effectively so, was that Southern rock is more an ethos or "culture" than a specific sounds. All of the bands went so far as to say that they weren't the heirs to Skynyrd's throne. Rather, these bands have come about in a culture with very Southern influences including country music, the blues, religion and the isolation and resultant madness of a rural upbringing. The new southern rock has more of a "rogue" independent flavor to it. One could say that it's the "southern lifestyle" that informs all of those lovely Features songs about domestic strife and relationship woes (Exorcising Demons, See You Through, Leave It All Behind, etc.). That's my take on it anyways. It's definitely not a cohesive scene, but it's nice to see that the South is being afforded a modicum of respect where it comes to our musical offerings that deviate from country, folk, blues and bluegrass.

I was finally able to hear the documentary, and was very impressed with the way they handled the stereotypical (although usually accurate) aspects of Southern culture. I agree with Carligula that it seems odd that such diverse bands could be considered a part of the same genre of music, especially the genre that will call to mind Lynard Skynard and the like. I was, however, on the whole quite pleased with the interviews and whatnot. I do wish they had talked to the band more about the music, and not just small-town life. Perhaps they did, and it just didn't make for interesting radio....

I agree wholeheartedly.

In regards to people in other countries listening to The Features:

I was on the New Pornographers board and someone had stated a topic about how everyone should check out The Features. Someone from Canada replied and said: "i checked out the features. they are pretty wicked". Looks like the boys are getting around. Nothing major, just thought I'd share smile.gif
