OK, I blundered onto them as the opening act for Joe, Marc's Brother at 12th and Porter on New Years Eve. It was a the first new band I've gotten excited about in a long, long time.

Let me see... my first Features experience was back in December. One of my good friends (who posts under the name Ceeze) had been talking to me about the Features forever... and I was finally 18 and could go. The show was incredible and I have been to every show I could make since
Sometime's I'm thinking that I love you, but I know it's only lust.

The first time I saw them was many years ago (5 or so) at the Exit/In. They played with The Rories and the Fl.Oz. That was back in the day when they had a couple more/different people in the line-up. I was a fan from the get-go. The naysayers I was with have seen the light since then. Thank goodness. I remember buying the EP the next day at Tower. It was worth the 8 bucks or so I paid for it. I've been a fan ever since that first show and wish I had kept track of all the shows I have been to like some of you all. Oh well.

I first saw the Features in fall 1999 at Sebastian's in Murfreesboro.  They were opening for Slack.  I went to see them because they came a week before to see a band that I was in, and they were really nice folks with really good taste in music.  My first impressions were that Rollum looked alot like Alex James and had the best stage presence of any drummer I had ever seen.  Roger was playing an Explorer bass, which was interesting, oh and some combination of the Explorer and a moustache that he had at the time made me think that he might have just gotten off work at Captain D's.  I don't remember thinking anything about Parrish.  Matt had technical difficulties throughout the show.  The only song I remember for certain hearing was 'Circus'.  I did like the show, but I don't think I really got hooked until the second or third time I saw them.

Jaime, did you copy and paste that entry from a few months ago? I was introduced to the Features via a cassette tape that a friend brought for me to hear while I was living in Knoxville, I guess in '99. I remember Thursday being on it. I saw them at the boro a couple months later.

i remember last fall when i moved up to the boro, i saw the beginning at the redrose and decided to give it a chance. i loved it, and they were playing at the boro about 2 weeks later. the woman at the door said they wouldn't be on for around two hours, so i was gonnna go back to the apt. and sleep, or something. So i go to pull out of the boro and this woman forces me over into the turning lane, so i go around on TN and wind up on some weird ass street. There was this stop sign that someone had ran over and i didn't see it, for it was flat. well this bastard in a van is rolling about 60 mi/h and slams into my side totally totalling my car.
so, i didn't actually get to see the features until the show when they played with (god-awful) jairus.
they blew me away. before the show, rollum was laying on that couch they used to have and he was tapping away on the house piano......... and many shows later, he convinced me to become a full-time melodica player

Yes, deveol, I have copied'n'pasted that 'lil 'First Features Experience' anecdote three times now (for a total of 4 postings), because that's how many times this topic has come up now, and my story has not changed.

Anybody want to talk about their first time seeing Dave Matthews Band? For me, it was July '94, Riverfront Park...

God, I'm just plain boring. No great story of being introduced to them in a live setting or anything of the sort.

I grew up in Franklin and was a big Self fan (from listening to good ole' Thunder 94. My friend and I used to call and ask them to play Self we hadn't heard yet. We were solely responsible for the first [and perhaps only] times that Cater to your Ego, Crimes on Paper, and Preschool Days were played on the radio, and we're proud of that). Anyhow, as a Self fan, I was on the Spongebath mailing list, and I got a postcard that solicited orders for Half Baked Serenade, Big Notebook for Easy Piano, and The Features EP (as well as Gumption's album). I ordered the Self and Features discs and I've been hooked ever since (I later picked up the Ounces' stuff too).

Still haven't seen them live, though I almost did. One of the District shows a couple of years back was an all Spongebath show. My car was in the shop, so my friend drove from Nashville to Chattanooga, where I've been relocated, and we were going straight to the show. The Features were first at like 6:00, but we heard it was 7. We drove from Chattanooga to Nashville, doing like 105 the whole way, showed up at 7 and got to see The Features leaving the stage. I was so bummed out. I got to see Self and The Fluid Ounces, but missed the band I was most eager to see live.

Oh well, Wednesday seems to be my day...

You are in for a very, very big treat. I think that the Features, like the Who, have never captured anything in the studio that is as powerful as their live show. You will be blown away.

I'm either going to pick up my friend Dave, the same friend that I went with years ago when I just missed them, and the same friend that I went to the TMBG show last week with, or I'll go alone. Whatever it takes to see this band!

I, too, have told my story at least 2 or 3 times on this board. It was 4 or 5 years ago at Dancin' In The District. If you want the full story, dig through the archives. Speaking of digging through the archives, I was bored tonight and did just that. There is some classic shit in there, notably the sexual tension between Brynnalicious and Neuboy, as well as Eno2 and all his relevance. Skip over the Elliot stuff though.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

This is so exciting. My first ever post after lurking for many moons. Oh boy!!

Anyways, I found out about the Features back in '96 when I was just doing some random surfing and found some music site that had soundclips of the self-titled EP (which I still don't have and can't remember how any of it goes). I couldn't find much info on them, and forgot about them for a couple of years. Then in '98 I thought, hey I should try looking them up again. And found the song "Thursday" on the dearly-departed Spongebath site. And I fell in love!! Had the song(s), and just kinda kept them in the back of my mind until a year or so ago, I thought about looking them up again. And then, the official web site came about. I have since seen them twice, both here in Memphis (please, no bashing. I already know how lousy this town is) at Hi-Tone.

A boring story, to be sure, but still, a quaint little tale of lost (and found) "treasure."

I found out about The Features through an old boyfriend. I didn't really discover them until I bought a copy of The Beginning. My first time hearing the features was in the spring of '99 on a friend's home video. The song was Armani Suede. I was unaware that the band was the features until about 2 years later. My first time to see the features live was in Ocotber of 2001 I think at 328 along with Self and the Ounces. It was a beautiful experience.

I saw them for the first time on New Year's too, and if you stuck around it got to be a really good night... wink.gif I had a chance to see them a couple weeks back with Jetpack and that was the best show I've ever seen at 12th and Porter. It was packed, the crowd was great, I was at the front...oh yeah!

my first show was during the NEA music conference in 96, i believe. it was at 328. i was seeing the bass player of sweet water, one of the other bands that played that night. we were about to leave when he said he wanted to stay and see the features, they had heard the features played a great show. and after we watched, we agreed.

after that i ,too, snuck into the boro and mainstreet. (and did more of my share of underage drinking.)

living in memphis made me almost forget about them until we moved back to murfreesboro. me and my 2 bestfriends were sitting around one night, bored out of our minds. i picked up the nashville scene and saw the features were playing the boro. we went and danced our asses off.

now i try to make it to every show, i get anal if i miss one.

at next generation ::cringe:: with a friend who had seen them once before and introduced me to them. after having to sit through the bloody, inhumane torture that was born empty, the features graced that stage with talent that it was certainly not used to. despite possibly the worst venue and opening acts, my first show was well worth the pain.

I first saw the Features with my friend and her then boyfriend at Lipscomb around Sept-Oct of 2001. The entire night was an experience (including killing about 3 hours in Cool Srpings Galleria, running some mucks in a wine store). I was 17 and arrived home at 2 AM. There was an argument with the parents but I still say that that night was one of the top 5 best nights of my life.
