TOPIC: If you're lame enough to use myspace
Posted  Friday, May 28, 2004 at 1:32 PM
Post 1 of 61
The Features have a profile that BrianW and I manage. We decided from the beginning not to take it too seriously and not to annoy people with it, and we've had a decent response so far. If you're on, you've most likely seen it. But if you haven't, look it up and send a friend request.

If you're not on Myspace, I believe you can still see it. I've conveniently nabbed this nifty URL for easy reference: www.myspace.com/thefeatures

There's not much there you won't find here, but it's fun to see some comments, faces and profiles of your fellow Features fans. Plus, multiple visits and listens help The Features "rankings" on Myspace (for whatever that's worth).

This message was just sent to the Features profile and I had to share:

Have you thought about joining Myspace's Top Guys yet? There are over 2 million profiles and we are taking the top 15 percent here (see the qualifications under this page). You may want to tidy up the page a bit or add some more comments just to be sure our moderators include yours when you register. We want to include those who make Myspace a little bit better than anywhere else! We are doing the same for our Top Girls as well, and hopefully we will be able to allow our top members to search through nothing but top profiles, making it easier to reach the best of the best, for the best Myspace users. Thanks! Stephanie

also, if you want to see our top girls go here: http://profiles.myspace.com/users/4113939

Do you think they're after Parrish?

We're still trying to find cool things to do with the site without annoying you with 6 bulletins a day about how a radio station in Texarkana just played a Features song.

a good 98% of the comments i've seen that they've left are for females.

i personally think that the comments - if any - should be made by the band members or management. but yeah, i'd go for the no comments at all. it's just tacky.

I take the myspace profile pretty seriously, so in my defense:

1) The Features leave personalized comments, not just "hey check out our new songs and pictures"
2) Meeks asked that this be done so more people feel their presence on myspace and the band's appreciation for the fans
3) Aside from the initial friend invites to key players (MissSeptember, Keith, RichardDawson, Sopforme, Me, Peace Frog, BrianW, etc.), all friend adds have been 100% unsolicited
4) We use the bulletin board VERY sparingly (and only leave one copy of these bulletins at a time)
5) I started from the most recent comment and worked my way backwards through the last 12 or so. I'll hopefully get through all of them eventually.
6) It just so happens that most people who leave comments are girls-- and if 98% of the comments you've seen are for girls, maybe you should stop using myspace to look at young girls' profiles, Sina.
6) It's not 2001 anymore, Sina, so stop pretending like you know what's going on with the band

unfortunately, you're leaving out very important people and that's why it's a problem. i mean superelk has left the features at least 2 messages and you'll step over him to holla at some girl who happened to come to a show. and i'm not even going to discuss peacefrog, brianw, and the band's friend jason from sparta.

this is irrelevant.
but since i was one of those friends who was invited, that information was nice to know, i guess.

that really doesn't make any sense. why would you work from the recent back? seriously, what is the logic behind that?

6) It just so happens that most people who leave comments are girls-- and if 98% of the comments you've seen are for girls, maybe you should stop using myspace to look at young girls' profiles, Sina.
oh so are you admitting that you're only leaving comments for the "young girls?" don't give me that shit, i only takes a single click of the mouse to know what's up.

and come on "Glad you enjoyed the service... er... show!" from a band who singer writes about family and kids and love. it's tacky

"Quote"
6) It's not 2001 anymore, Sina, so stop pretending like you know what's going on with the band
first i would have to pretend that the myspace profile really had something to do with the band and it's not just meeks and rory telling you guys what to do. then i'd have to pretend that stuff like show times and what not are correct.

1) what do you think I'm talking about? they left comments and I responded to them.

2) those people left comments early on. like I said, I'll get to it

3&4) these are just two examples of what sets the features apart from "high school bands"

5) not everything I do is 100% logical-- I just randomly picked a way not to play favorites. I doubt anyone but you took it so personally.

6) it helps if you look at the original comment. in this case, she said that the show was a "religious experience". Last I checked, "service" was an acceptable term for a regular church-based ceremony. That's what I meant when I said "personalized repsonse", sweetie.

Do you honestly think I would pretend to be in the band to get girls on myspace? You must think I'm really pathetic

7) Pretend whatever you want-- the myspace profile was mine and Brian's idea. Meeks has complimented us on it and has asked our input on how to really make it work. In fact, we've already shot down several ideas that he suggested because he hasn't used myspace and doesn't know how annoying certain tactics can be.

Because you don't manage a band page on myspace, I'll let you in on some insider information: Zip codes and show times are required to post the information for a show. If I don't have the info, I use the default setting of 1am and a zip code of 00000. The show times have been confirmed for Reading and Leeds and are now on there (as well as the date change for the nashville CD release).

In the future, if you have any information I don't have or corrections to make, maybe you should send me the info instead of just bitching about it.

I think I've added TheFeatures to my friends list, but it still won't let me comment- not exactly sure how that works.
I have it set up where all comments must first be approved. The only thing that is not approved are blatant advertisements.

I was just reading over this thread and I thought it was funny how moot (imo) all this is now. In 2006, record labels look at how many friends a band has and, from what I've heard, it is a legitimate factor in a band's consideration. Labels want to do as little as possible, so they could realistically choose a band with 20,000 friends over a band with 200 friends. Even if the friend request was totally unsolicited, there's a decent chance the requestee will at least glance at the profile once. I'm not saying this is a good thing, it's just the way it is.

I looked at the features profile just now and they have 5856 friends. For a major label band who's had a profile for 2 years, that's fucking pathetic. Myspace is free marketing. FREE MARKETING. Universal probably has people on the payrole that do nothing but sit on myspace all day (btw I want that job). They have a chance to expose countless people to The Features just by sending messages or friend requests, again at no cost.

Can this be annoying? Yes. But it's good business and this isn't called showmakeeveryonehappyallthetime, it's called showbusiness.

P.S. Sorry to revive a completely dead thread with a huge rant, but it's not like anything else is going on around here.

I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

Honestly, Keith, I will admit my views on the whole thing have somewhat evolved. I still say that it looks kind of desperate for a band to do it, but I can definitely see the potential for sending out those requests. Lately I've been getting more messages from bands rather than friend requests. I think it's a little less of a turn-off when the band sends a polite (even non-personalized) message that explains why I've been "chosen" and why I might be interested.

Of course, this takes more time. But, like you said, people are paid to do just that.
