TOPIC: Interactive Discography Relaunch
Posted  Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at 1:40 AM
Post 1 of 34
So I've redesigned the Interactive Discography page, to some extent...

visit at

The Features Interactive Discography

All I have done is the main page, which includes all songs that we know of, plus the first and most recent performances, if known, as well as icons for what recordings the songs have been on and a "lifeline" indicator for each song.

I intend to do alot more work, as well as create some decent art for the Circus/33 single, the 3 song demo tape, the Rawlings sessions, and some others. I need more accurate art for The Features EP (I just used the head graphic I use for my avatar for now, from the inside back cover), and could stand to have full-square icons for Thursday and The Beginning. I'd like to get the actual Spongebath logo for the samplers. I'm satisfied but could be happier with the art I created for the Mississippi album (based in part on the Sun design from my old T-Shirt) and the Mahaffey sessions (a pic of Matt). One day I'll be able to do all of this, but til then I wanted to at least offer what I had done, because I won't be able to do more for awhile.

Eventually clicking on any of the album graphics will take you to a page for that album, and all of the songs that I can do it for will have lyrics links. But that'll be when I have more time.

Please, please send me comments and suggestions so I can know what people might like this site to have. Do you or don't you like the status indicators? Should I put a key for what the symbols mean? Is the layout working for you?

Lemme know,

Will

I forgot to say:

I'm also in the market for the following:

-Any more info about the first or most recent performances of any of these songs (I'm pretty sure I've got all that we know though)
-Any other songs that I don't have listed (again, I think I've got that covered)
-Any other releases I don't have represented (like this 3-Song demo tape that just came up in a post... who knew about that?)
-A list of the songs known to have been recorded for the upcoming album
-Better scans of the cover art for what has been released
-Dates for when Rollum joined, and when Jason Taylor and Don Sergio left
-A scan of the old bumper sticker that had the same design scheme as the Sun shirt (I've lost mine).
-Spongebath Records Logo
-Anything else that feels relevant

Here goes what I know:

Bumblebee was first played LIVE on 5/02/02, but it had appeared on the Beginning a year before.
Captain Williams was first played 8/24/00
Psycho Santa, Untitled Christmas Song, and Christmas only played 12/16/00
As best as I can tell or remember, Dark Room debuted 1/29/00
I believe Exorcising Demons was first played on 9/18/99 (Roger says on the recording, "We're going to try a new one.")
Kari-Anne debuted on 5/13/99 (let me double check that one)
Rabbit March was played last on 9/4/99
Roger's Theme was last played on 7/21/00
See You Thru, to the best of my knowledge or memory, debuted on 11/10/99

I can approximate the dates of some others.

If you're wanting information (and graphics) from the ol' Spongebath days, the Internet Wayback Machine is a veritable treasure trove. Check some of the stuff at:

http://web.archive.org/web/19991128143626/...c.com/main.html
http://web.archive.org/web/20010925010858/...ngebathrec.com/

A lot of the stuff that used to be in the archive seems to be missing now (espcially the stuff from spongebath.net), but I think I may have some of it archived on CD. I'll see what I can dig up.

Very well done Wiyum. I'm curious to know what formula you have used to determine how active the songs are. I'm always down for some statistics.

Excellent work. I think a legend would help for the status bars and the album covers. The most complete list of the Craig Krampf recordings was made by smee here. I don't know if any of that will become the new album or not.

I love statistics too & I have access to SPSS if you want correlations, p values, etc : )

Very nice. I really like the "lifeline indicators," excellent idea.

I agree with Lauren that a legend would be helpful.

Alright...

The Glowing Green is for songs that get played at every show with a full set. Songs that haven't NOT been played in as long as I could tell.

The Green means its been played recently at most shows.

The Yellow means its been played recently but sporadically.

The Orange means its been played in the past 6 months, but not recently.

The Red means its been played in the past year, but not the past 6 months.

The Blue means it pops up as a treat for fans.

The Black square means a year has passed since the song has been played publicly.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and suggestions and content. I may be able to add the new data, but that'll be all for like 2 weeks.

Will

Awesome, Will. Great job.

I'm sure you're aware that there was a show on 2-6, though, right?

By the way, you're the first person who ever said I was "hard" at anything. Thanks for the compliment.

Do you happen to know when that show took place? That's the most prominent piece of information missing from my Features encyclopedia.

I'd also like to say that Lauren is the most socialable scientist that I've ever met. She's not snobby like some of the one's that I've met.

How about IVs of age & gender and DV of favorite Features song, maybe a small group of songs that you pre-select. I'm sure there are more interesting IVs out there, like length of time being a Features fanatic, birth order, cranium circumference, etc.

Will--

After scouring bootlegs, pictures, setlists and probing my own memory, I have come up with the debut dates for some more songs.

Kari Anne actually debuted 5/9/99
Some others:
Walk You Home 8/24/00
2x2 9/21/00
Stick Together 8/24/00
Captain Williams 8/24/00
Serious 1/29/00
Action 1/11/01

and these 6 songs debuted on 3/15/01
Temporary Blues, God Save Rock n Roll, Harold, Stark White Stork Approaching, Burm, and Don't Lie to Me.

Willie and the Willigers was last played on 1/19/00

There are a few left that will take more resources to pinpoint. But for now, this is all I can find.

I'll say! Throw in "Hungry Like the Wolf" and the majority of their catalog at that point, and it = one great show.

Haha- me either. Its only value lies in its documentation of the best Features show ever. I actually uploaded a few of the tracks from it back in the early days of the upload site. But the digitized quality was completely unlistenable, as opposed to the hardly bearable quality of the original. Ah well, some things were meant to be remembered only in our minds, I guess. Ceeze, I'm of course willing to recopy you a tape of my tape- but imagine how bad it will sound now, years later, before you say yes.

I wondered if that was your doing, but I never actually listened to those uploaded tracks. I could perhaps clean it up some, but the vocals and such were pretty distorted. I don't really think of that as my favorite Features show ever. That's a tough question to tackle.

(Please note: if this will begin a discussion once again of favorite Features shows, then let's start a new thread)

Updated the site to be current with the Vandy show and YDDD's additional findings-thanks man for your scouring.

Surprisingly, Demons and See You Thru have fallen out of "every show" status...

There was some talk about documenting "waves" of Features songs. A meritable effort to be sure, but I'm shying away from it right now on the basis of its arbitrary nature. I can classify the band before and after Rollum as justifyable divisions, and I can do the same with albums... but to assign what I feel like to all of those songs... I just don't know what I'd do. If anyone would like to convince me otherwise, I'll gladly do it. I just don't know what my justification would be.

Immediately after typing that, I thought of a year-of-premiere system. Dunno.

No problem. There are a few others (i.e. Stagecoach's debut and Your Smile's last performance) that are thorns in my side. Maybe further research will help me figure it out.

It would become a bit too much to view if you classified the songs in yet another way after showing their status being played and albums on which they appear. It's a great idea and probably worth documenting somewhere, but I think your site is great enough as it stands. Keep up the good work.

I think that the site is great as is and has enough info on it right now. The whole "classify by waves" thing is just something that I wondered about and we could just post it in a thread, not to be added to the site.

And I just went through and looked at the site again. Man, I love statistics. I do have an excel spreadsheet that documents all the concerts I've seen and the percentages of how many times the songs have been played (Dark Room has been played at 67% of the concerts I've seen). I would totally volunteer to work on a "waves of songs" list but I've only been a fan for 17 months so....but overall, keep up the good work Wiyum!

I think the waves of songs are somewhat implied by when the songs debuted. It would just be a matter of classifying them that way. It could be done if they were listed that way instead of in alphabetical order. If I get some extra time, or more likely some time that I would rather intentionally put off working, in the next few nights, I may use what Will has and make a thread on here with them grouped in waves. I have a feeling that TF might help with it, too.
