TOPIC: Is there a Features Look?
Posted  Friday, November 22, 2002 at 9:25 AM
Post 1 of 92
I was at the boro show last week. And me and my buddy are there, a bit intoxicated. Well, my buddy says to someone beside of him "we are big features fans" I overheard a fella in front of me saying "they arent features fans and they better not spill beer on me." Granted, i dont have the alternative looking clothing, hair, etc. But i love the music. I have been following the features for a few years now. I dont write a new topic in this message poll every day, but i do come on the website on a regular basis to see what all is happening. So.....just b/c i dont look like a features fan, why discriminate? The music is bad ass. I say let the music do the talking, not be so superficial.

K.
Thats my contribution for the month

Hi Mark.

Yes, a lot of Features fans have a passion for snazzy vintage clothes. It's okay that you don't, though. If someone is a jerk to you because you don't dress like them, then fuck 'em. Dress how you want.

ooooooooooooh, you just opened a very large can of worms.

I was the person who said you had better not spill beer on me. What you conveniently left out was the fact that you pushed your way to the front of the stage. you knocked some of my friends out of their spots which they had been keeping for an hour by the time you decided to show your "fandom". when everyone looked at you, you gave the excuse of being a huge features fan. if you're such a big fan, then why dont you get there at 7:30 or 8:00 like the rest of us. do you hang up posters for the band? do you chalk the campus?

i did not get annoyed with you due to the fact that you did not dress like me. i could care less if you dress like me. i was annoyed because you bullied your way to the front, and that is something that i will just not stand for...

Yeah, I gotta say I'm with RD on this one. If one is willing to stand through a less than stellar opening act (and no, that's not a direct attack on the flynts), they deserve a good view. Plus, while I'm at it, I'm in favor of letting those of smaller stature in front of me as long as I can see over their heads (or if they're an especially amorous (sp?) and hot chick).

As far as the other issue goes, I'll just quote Boogie Nights: "You know what I say? Wear what you dig, man." Or something like that.

I let it slide once, but I now I feel I must voice my opinion.

First, you seem to be under the impression that the time at which someone arrives at a show is directly correlated to his love for the Features. This is, quite obviously, a ludicrous idea. I used to arrive a few hours before the shows, like you do now. Lately, though, I've been going later in a vain attempt to attempt to avoid the opening acts. This, however, does not indicate that my love for the Features has waned. If you like arriving early, I think that's great. But don't assume that people who do not have the same behavioral patterns aren't as much of a fan as you. Some people have jobs and can't arrive before 10:30 or 11:00. Others have social lives that prevent them from hanging out in empty bars for two hours.

Secondly, I don't think the Features have ever played a show with assigned seating or "spots" nor are their shows on a "first come, first served" basis. At the shows, it's survival of the fittest. If someone is bigger than you, they can take your spot whenever they choose. I'm often pushed from "my spot," too, because I'm not a terribly assertive person. However, I understand that's how things work at these shows. You can accept it as a fact of life and enjoy the show from your new spot, or you can whine about it. Either way, no one is going to respect your personal space unless you learn some martial arts that will allow you to beat the crap out of people twice your size. Then, and only then, can you watch the show from whatever spot you choose.

well Ray,
Yes, my buddy to go to the front that night, He's pushy like that. I on the other hand asked the person in front of me if i could stand up with my buddy. They were friends of yours i believe. A guy and a girl. But once i heard that u were a bit mad, i moved back. I had no intentions of pissing anyone off. Just wanted to watch the show and have fun. But i agree, There are no seating arrangements. Ive been pushed around quite a bit. I generally try and be a nice guy about it. even in the front, people were still coming and getting in front of me. But i guess i was a bit mad when people were talking shit. Its no big deal. I just think we features fans should stick together and not alienate each other. I dunno. No harm, no foul i dont suppose. Just wanted to bring up the subject. and get some responses

Ciao for now

i arrive early because i hate waiting around. plus it gives me time to engage in conversation with people on the board, the band, the bar tenders, etc etc etc etc. i usuaslly try to meet someone new each show.

as of where i stand.........that wall provides protection!

what the fans wear have nothing to do with the band....if pelham and roger decided to play the entire show naked i seriously doubt that people such as Ray davies would follow suit. and vice versa.....(imagine all the fans showing up naked to the show....what will the band do?)
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

i must take your side here. i was the guy with the girl, and you were very nice about it. i actually appreciated it very much. it's easy to get grumpy when you're packed into the hot sweaty boro, forced to sit through an opening band. anyways, you were nice about it. i heard you say that you didn't want to piss anybody off and i thought to myself, "hmm... that's very thoughtful."

thanks

apologies are in accordance for markspencer76, i did not know that you were the nice one in your group. i was under the impression from your post that you were the "pushy" one. if you had made that clearer instead of bringing up clothing discrimination, i would have gone a little easier on you.

and mr. tom foolery, thank you for the keen observation that I need to take karate in order to hold my own against burly fans or anone in general at shows. this will be added to my To Do list......

although tf's observations are astute, i still find pushing to the front to be rude. i don't think getting to the venue a couple of hours early necessarily measures your fandom, but rather your intention to see the show from front row. and to arrive after the opening act and then push your way up there just seems mean to me. it is true that some people may have other, more pressing engagements to attend to first. it is also true that the features play many shows and perhaps those pressing engagements will not tie them up next time and they will, then , get to enjoy the show from first row. as for now, they should not push in front of those who were able to get there early.
and no need to worry, i know these thoughts are idealistic. i am merely stating my opinion on how i feel shows should be, not complaining about the reality of them. i'll take the features and way i can get them.
oh, and the idea of features fans having a dress code is insane. wear what you please.

I don't check the board thoroughly for a day, and look where it gets me.

Alright, remember that show at The Attic last week? Oh wait. How could anyone forget it? Anyway, I was on the second row (behind the two people who danced like they were having seizures last time), so I stepped back. So, a couple of other people moved in, which was fine. Hell, I moved in the first place. THEN, there were their other friends who moved in front of me as well. They were people of varying heights...around 5'5" to 6'2" I would say. My view was not that great, but the bottom line was that I was not assertive enough that night. As a result, I lost my spot. So, eventhough I was the one who got pushed out of the way, I still agree with Tom Foolery on this one. Deevol can back me up by saying that my view was, "shitty", but I still had a great time. I saw them when I could, and when I couldn't, I sure as hell still heard them. I'm happy either way, really.
And, many know that when I can, I get there early. It's not so much me wanting to get a spot as it is me being uptight and always wanting to be early. (I like to call it punctual.) So, enjoy the music regardless of your spot. And, if someone takes my place in front of the stage, and they aren't a Features fan, I hope that my spot is what makes it easier for them to become addicted like so many of us are.
To address the very first post, I don't think that I fit in with the normal crowd of Features fans most of the time. Actually, at the second show I went to, Jenny and I commented to each other how we stuck out. But, if you are secure with what you wear, I am with jamiecarroll. Fuck em. Anyone who is a Features fan is welcome, even if they decide to wear a Food Lion bag as a shirt. I guess I never have been really keen on judging a book by its cover.

Apology is accepted Ray,
and others that i may have offended. I do apologize for making my way to the front also. But to my understanding, of most features shows i go to people tend to move to the front after the opening act, at about the time the features are setting up. So i tend to do this also, and try my hardest not to offend anyone. This happens at not only the features shows but pretty much every show ive seen in my life. THe difference here, is we see each other on a regular basis, and its not cool to have enemies within such a tight fan base. But all is good. I suppose, its just the mechanics of a small venue concert. Guess thats all for now

I agree completely.

I don't think getting there before anybody else tells that you're a bigger fan than others, but that you want to be able to have a clear view, and therefore, acheive the overall Features experience. I think it is very rude for someone who has just recently arrived to push and shove his/her way to the front of a venue and knock someone who has been waiting for a long time, possibly hours, out of his/her original standing space. It has happened to me several times, and my little self has to struggle to withstand the pressure. Obviously though, you have stated that you are not one of those people who pushes to the front and does not apologize, so all is well.

Oh, and yeah... the dress code comment... that's insane. I don't believe any one of us would discrimate against another due solely to his/her choice of clothing.

I'm just wondering what other controversy will arise on the message board within the next few days.

In the words of Mr. Paul McCartney, "Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friends".

Seriously, though, I'm certainly not one to condone rude behavior, and I strongly believe that pushing other people out of the way would fall into that category. My point was simply that it's a fact of life with which we all have to live.

i'm completely with tom foolery on this one. and instead of repeating everything he says i'll just add on...
i've been going to features shows for years and at one time i hung up posters and chalked (at that time i think i was the only one that wasn't rory and wasn't in the band until lovely lauren came along) and i still didn't make it a point to be there for the opening band and none of the two made me any less or any more of a features fan. i'd also weave my way to the front of the stage.
what's insulting to me as a features fan is to see someone go see such a great band with crowd interaction and participation and have them just stand there in the front. if i were in the band...
no, i'll put it this way

i'd be insulted and disappointed if people didn't dance at my journey coverband shows.

that reminds me, most of my experiences at shows is that there's a pocket right in the front of the stage. i don't know if any of you made it to the white stripes show when they played here (it was before their mtv break), but the place was completely packed. sardines had ten times the room most people had there. anyway, half way thru the show i worked my way to the front and whattaya know. not only was my friend stacey in the very front, but right in front of jack was room for like 6 people. so you never know.

i also remember the summer before last when the features actually packed the boro. so you either worked your way to the front or watched from outside.

dayum, i'm rambling like roadie now.

kinda like if you go to one of craig murphy's shows, you expect a fight. i'm really not a very violent person but i know i have to hold my own in any situation.
the last time i was at gentlemen jim's i got a beer bottle (full of beer might i add) busted like 2 inches away from me. i bitched for like 2 seconds and then realized i was at gentlemen jim's.

Because you mentioned it, does anyone have the scoop on gentleman jim's as a venue for rock shows? Forget Cassettes are playing on monday and I'm trying to decide whether or not to go.

I'm assuming it's a bar. Is it smaller than the Boro? How's the PA?

Any info would be appreciated.

it's smaller than the boro. i don't know about the pa. i think i've attended one show there that beer hasn't ended up everywhere so watch your step. i guess it depends on the band.

(First off, I'll apologize for the tangent)

Wow, where do i start? I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like Fair Verona, because I LOVED them. FG = doni the drummer + beth the guitarist (she was the less vocal one who often stood to the side). I always found her voice a bit softer and prettier while Shawna had the perfect punk rock growl. On the other hand, both were extremely vocally gifted and could sing with a wide range of styles.

FG is MUCH less straightforward than FV. They consider themselves mostly indie with a splash of math (i.e. really complicated time signatures). Their songs often build from quiet whispers and single keyboard notes (doni doubles as a very minimal keyboardist) to screams and POUNDING drums. Just to see Doni is worth the price of admission. I may or may not be able to make it, depending on my ever-changing work schedule. Knowing that some fellow features fans might be there is motivating, though rolleyes.gif

If you have the capabilities, check out their mp3s at www.forgetcassettes.com. As I mentioned yesterday, rumor has it that they're opening for The Features and De Novo Dahl on Dec. 13th. They're also playing next monday (dec. 2nd I think) at the End.

THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK, JUST A SUGGESTION:

speaking of the getting there early and standing thru 'less than stellar acts'. It's really cool that some of you can wait in front of the stage, sometimes well over an hour, to be right up front. If I was able to stand in one spot for that long and had that same kind bladder control I would do the same. But, if that is your chosen method of show-going than maybe you could try to respect the openers, as bad as they may be. I've seen it numerous times, but last Saturday is the most obvious example I have. I was walking to the boro from the bank parking lot and could see, through the window behind the stage, a two-deep row of fans, right up front, arms crossed and chatting to one-another. It seems to me that you are being overly-expressive in your indifference to the opening band. maybe just try to listen and get into it, or stand close to the stage, ready to move right up front during the set break. I don't think you have to worry about anyone taking your spot, because, as previously mentioned, there are no assigned seats. I ask again, please don't take this as a challenge, just an observation. sorry for venting.

Going back to the original topic. Sorry I'm a bit late.... I missed out completely on this topic. But I definitely can relate to this topic. I throw people off, all of the time, as soon as I enter a club. It f#cking gets on my nerves all of time. I rarely get to vent on this issue. But here goes. If you have ever seen a black girl at the front of the stage at the features show, that's ME! I know I get comments all of the time when I go to almost any show. I've seen the features more than a few times, for that fact, I've been to so many concerts featuring "white artists" and I automatically get looked at, sometimes stared at during the entire show for christ sake"
Strange they paid money to watch a band, but they watch me sometimes. But I get that "I bet she knows nothing about the band at all" look the entire night. Or people just watch me to see if I know any of the words to the songs until they stop staring, which pisses me off as well, but I've learned to deal with it because people are sometimes ass-holes and they are so un-aware of it. I refuse to compromise my taste in music just because of a few stares.

Just at the Boro Show, I was unaware that this girl was behind me like saying something, or joking about me or something, and my friend tells me after the girl has like left.... that this was going on. **which was so wrong, dry.gif rolleyes.gif I would have told her if some trick was yaking about her** any way dude, i get it alot worse than just because someone doesn't have on vintage clothing.?!

Sincerely
Mark Spencer76

Well I would have told you about the chic behind you making comments, but I didn't want to start anything. She was saying stuff about me as well. I totally forget the fact that people think it's odd for a black person to be into rock shows. I'm so used to being with you, I'm just oblivious to the fact. It takes moments like that girl making the lame comments for me to think about it. You shouldn't let it bother you though. If they want think you should be bumpin' some Nelly or 2pac, then just let them think that. You are the most diverse person that I know, and I think it's great that you refuse to compromise your tastes for other people.

I've turned on a labmate of mine to the Features. She happens to be black and she absolutely loves them. She admits that her tastes aren't sterotypically what her demographic would suggest. She's a huge Radiohead fan, so she's alright in my book. I think I may have finally convinced her to go with me to the Dec. 13th show.

weird
one of my coworkers was suppose to be with me at the boro show and he's black. (he's hot as hell, too.)
i always feel like i stick out, too. i forget that i'm not a blonde with blue eyes so (even after 23 years) i still get a little thrown off when people approach me and the second question they ask is about my ethnicity.
i have no idea where i was going with that.

i told her i was crunchy black and it was all good

(which is flattering by the way...) i just think it is interesting that people think judiasm is a race. i mean, i know a lot of dark haired, olive skin jews, but i also know some that are fair skin blondes and red heads. i used to not like looking different because everyone picked on me in elementary school, but now being exotic is hot. not that i am hot, but anyways...i am really into knowing people's ethnicity. so what is your's sina's? and anyone else who wants to share. i think it is important to know and be proud of your heritage so I always ask people. it intrigues me.

What a coincidence. I have a roomate from Venezuela, but for fun my other roomates and I pretend he's Mexican. In return, he calls us Honkies. See, that's what I'm saying about jokingly mocking another's ethnicity. It's all in good fun. And it's only done because everyone knows we're joking.

Ahhh.... I love Freaks and Geeks. It's one of my favorite canceled shows. I especially love the episode where Lindsey's job in the band was to refill the dry ice so her boyfriend could play his drum solo. I also enjoy the episode where Sam(???) gets locked out of the boys locker room and streaks the school. It's a great show and I wish that it would be realeased on DVD so I could enjoy it again.

If I remember correctly, "Freaks and Geeks" is one in a long line of chances that ABC took (chances that only ABC seems to take) that has been critically successful and genuinely good television, and thus cancelled long before its time. Others in this line:

Twin Peaks (the ultimate)
Sports Night
Clerks: The Animated Series
Mulholland Drive (which never went to air, but became the movie)
My So Called Life

and many others.

They also cancelled "Taxi" immediately after the series won just about every possible emmy that year, including Best Show (or Best Sitcom, whatever its respective "Best" category would be). When accepting that last award, the whole cast took the stage and informed the world that they had been cancelled. Amazing how stupid the execs at ABC (and now Disney) can be.

Yeah, but it's kinda pricey ($60 at Best Buy I think). I'll bet you could rent 'em, though. I believe there are 19 episodes on 5 discs for whomever cares. It was a great show indeed.

I wish Claire Danes was still that hot. I thought she looked spread a little thin in Digby Goes Down. Not that I'm saying skinny girls are ugly (see previous posts), but she looked a little haggard as well. Amanda Peet also looked a little rough, but she was playing a junkie, so its understandable.

and i believe that's the complete series if i'm not mistaken. $60 isn't that bad, considering i saw it for near $90 at suncoast. i guess that's jsut one more reason you shouldn't shop at the mall. i'll probably get it for my birthday or something, if i'm lucky that is.

$60 for 19 episodes is pricey? That's nearly $3 an episode, which is a great deal, much better than most TV shows are priced.

Consider the Sorpranos, which is 14 episodes for $80 at Best Buy...

And I thought Claire looked rather hot in Igby. Much better than she had in recent years in other films.
