I get a soundboard recording anytime I shoot them... the sound guys are usually pretty helpful as long as you let them do their thing and not pester them to much. Of course, I always have a camera on my shoulder and a portable DAT. So maybe I look like more of a working stiff instead of a fan. Knowing how to speak their language is good, too. When they ask what kind of feed do you want say an RCA, Digital RCA or a balanced XLR, not "One of those three pronged dealies." Just my two cents. And for what its worth. A good mic recording sounds better than the soundboard a lot of the time. I know with some of the things I've cut for the features I had to take the sound into a pro editing station to get the levels properly mixed. The soundboard is being mixed for the room... not recording.

mainly what i want to know is if i need to adjust the settings on my minidisc recorder or if i should just leave them alone. i don't want it to be too loud. also, i've got a double ended stereo plug, a red and white "Y" cable, and a fiberoptic digital cable, but i'm not sure which i should use, and I don't know where to put it.

I'll tell ya where to put it...

Well that's a good start. It's all gonna depend on what he has to offer you coming out of the board. The red and white "y" cable is called an RCA. More specifically you have a mono out to split mono in (Meaning that you will get a mixed, non stereo feed that will then go onto two tracks of your MD) Personally the digital is the best way to go. Its all ones and zeros. No staitc or home or any other junk that comes down the line out.

You definitely want to get there early to talk to the sound guy (ie before the opening band) then monitor the opening band's levels on your MD. Set them accordingly. The Features will be in that ballpark, but you'll have to turn them down a bit, becasue the sound guy will have a tendency to turn up the main band due to more peole in the room to deaden the sound. So after the Features take the stage, don't forget to hit record (I have done this) watch your levels for a few secs and then go have fun. They won't vary to much from there.

You'll also have to select your input accordingly... you'll want line levels... not mic. Unless he tells you he is feeding a mic level out...

In general be nice, if you don't know what he is talking about ask and don't be a nuisance. Most are very accomodating.

I believe the sound guy that's been there forever is no longer a part of Blue Cats. I don't know if this changes anything, but be prepared for someone who might not work with you. Hopefully you won't have a problem.

i'm going to try to get a soundboard recording if it's not too crowded.  has anyone done this before?  i always chicken out and end up using my microphone.
For a show at a club, I think that a recording with a good room mic sounds better than a board recording. They never have the guitar loud enough in the board mix (because there is a loud amp on stage and they don't need as much guitar for the room).

Soundboard recordings tend to be the best if you want to hear the vocals above everything, but again the rest is not mixed properly with it.
