TOPIC: mp3s anyone?
Posted  Monday, September 2, 2002 at 2:48 PM
Post 1 of 37
hi everyone. wheni went down south recently a guy i know played me the features self-titled EP (the one that is out of print), and they actually recorded a couple EPs in his home recording studio. when i heard the EP i thought it was some of the coolest straight ahead rock from the later half of the 90s. if anyone has mp3s of the first EP and can send them to me via AIM at guitarfreak53 i would really really appreciate it.

thanks
xander

I'm confused.
Are you talking about the Spongebath EP that you want, or are you talking about this other EP that they recorded in this guy's home studio.
Which is the best straight up rock of the 90s or whatever?
Which do you want IM'ed to you?

That'll make it easier to help.

i cant think of any websites that have features material. i know that when audiogalaxy was still running that you could get just about any features song that you wanted, but it's no more.

I think around the time we tried the Features FTP thing, someone started an actual website to help those who couldn't access FTP. Am I right about this? I didn't check the archives, but I think that's in there somewhere.

That site doesn't have any stuff from the self-titled EP.

Which causes me to ask once again: Does anyone care if the STEP stuff is distributed freely? In contrast, if stuff from The Beginning is given away, that might affect the sales of that CD. I can see why the band wouldn't approve of that because they get money from the sales of that CD. But is there any way one can purchase the self-titled EP that would cause the residuals to flow back to the band? I've seen it for sale on eBay and at Phonoluxe, but buying from either of these places doesn't help the band financially. If this is the case, is there any reason not to give away the songs?

hmmmmmmmm......i dont see why not. it would help spread the gospel. the only way that i can think of why it shouldnt be up for download is if and when the band decides to reissue the ep. it's fair game until then.

I doubt that'll happen...Don is gone and Rollum is a better drummer than Jason and their song writing is 100x better now.

Why don't we all just stuff a dollar for every MP3 of their's that we have in a Thank You card and give it to them at their next Boro show, thanking them for all the beautiful music they've given us?

This post started out as a joke and now I'm pondering...

If I'm stuffing dollars anywhere, it's going to be into Roger's pink bikini briefs.

I've at different times thought about monetarily supporting the band or seeing some way I could do that, but I've been living below the poverty line all year. Maybe we should buy them a cake. Or maybe we could throw them a real rock star party with bikini-clad hookers and lots of coke--and cake.

i think the features should borrow a page from the def leppard book and have horny chicks backstage to entertain the band. of course, by def leppard standards, this would mean that roger and parrish would leave the stage to be pleasured, while rollum and matt would get the crowd going. perhaps it's worth a try. plenty of coke and booze would be required.

how very neat. i do enjoy oasis up to be here now, and i must admit that the gallaghers have a certain flare for profanity and boozing that intrigues me. said droves of oasis fans ought to be cool with me.

masochism, however, isn't really up my alley- whether oasis related or otherwise. i have no plans to stab and/or fellate the mancunian lads. jarvis cocker on the other hand...

Oasis fans? No I don't think there are any here...unless you count Damon and myself.

Let it be known that any thread can become an Oasis thread when it comes to Oasis fans...yes I am rabid but masochistic? I dunno...let me remove these oasis pins from my elbow...

Hello again.
MP3 trade site!

Check it out: http://sweb.uky.edu/~klhaut2/main.cgi

While trying to teach myself Perl, I came up with a crude web page for sharing MP3 files. It works, but keep in mind, it is a work in progress. This webpage exists on legitimate webspace, so it won't be shut down until I exceed my disk space quota. At that point, I can move it to greener pastures. Please upload what you have. Files uploaded will be available for immediate download.

(In case anybody forgot, I'm the guy who set up a temporary FTP site for Features MP3s a few months back... A recent transfer to a new office forced me to shut down my illicit FTP/HTTP server, and I did not have time to back up all of my MP3s before I had to wipe the hard drive. So, content is sparse at present.)

Yeah, hey! Good to see everyone else is still around as well. I didn't mean to disappear on y'all.

I've returned to school full-time at the ripe age of 31, aggressively pursuing a BS in Journalism. I should be done by the time I'm 35. Meanwhile, I'm working full-time as well. In my spare time, I am trying to teach myself Perl and SQL. Also, I cook, play guitar (poorly) and like to travel. (Sorry, it seemed like I was writing a personals ad there for a minute!)

I have found the time to see two Features shows (both in Lexingrad), but I haven't kept up with my obsessive fan activity. Dang me!

So, my Perl project seems to work. Granted it is ugly and very short on frills. However, it does enable anyone with a web browser to upload and download files. In other words, it does what it is supposed to do. Yay! I will try to make it prettier and more "Feature"-laden as time permits.

Was thinking of coming down for the Features/Lume show, but the posts I have seen (re: the venue and opening band) have not been encouraging. Any other dates coming up that I should keep in mind?

On which platforms do you work with Perl? And which SQL database are you using? mySQL? By the way, I'm a Gemini who enjoys the outdoors, candlelight dinners, and long walks on the beach.

I think it's a great start... and much appreciated. Where did you get the songs that you have on there? Some of them are pretty low quality (mono at 40 kb/s... Yikes!). If you have them on CD, you might want to consider re-encoding them. Also, how much storage space do you have on the site? We don't want you to hit your quota too early.

I think the Blue Sky Court show will be worth the drive. But, if you're skeptical, the show at The Boro on the 26th is a very safe bet.

Hi khautala.

Don't let my report stop you from coming to Blue Sky Court. I'm a spoiled bastard and a pessimist. If I hadn't seen the Features in as long as you, I would definitely come to either Blue Sky or the Boro. The Features will kick ass either place, trust me. The sound quality will probably be better at Blue Sky Court, but the Features will probably play a longer set at the Boro. You won't have a horrible time at Blue Sky, you might just be hot if they haven't fixed the AC yet, and I happen to like Lume (but I like Jeff Buckley). If you really don't want to make the drive, the Bowl of Fire/Features tour might come to Kentucky.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I did not encode any of the MP3s being traded on my homepage. So I cannot vouch for their bitrate.

I do have some CDs which I conned away from a Gypsy spice merchant, containing many rare takes (and smelling of cardamom). When I have time, I will encode them. I usually go with 160kbps (stereo 44.1kHz), as a happy medium between crappy sound and ridiculous download times. If you need better than that, let me know...

Heck, if you've got a fast connection, I could just post the gzipped ISO images for you, and you can burn your own CDs. The Gypsy did warn me that the recordings were cursed, however. Caveat emptor.

I haven't plunged into mySQL yet. Right now, I'm doing a trial-and-error "teach yourself PERL" course, just for fun. SQL will be next. I am actually learning to speak PERL, and use it to solve real life problems.

SO glad to have you & your site back Keith! I had heard this summer that the Features were potentially opening for the Apples in Stereo in Lexington at the end of this month. But since we haven't heard anything since, that may be unlikely. You can blame me for some of the crappy quality mp3s. I was going from tapes made on a $20 dictaphone through the line-in on my computer onto crappy recording software. But I felt it was important to get classics like Don't Lie out to the masses so they can start requesting them too. I'll start uploading better stuff soon...
