GOD!!! I want to go. I am going to see if I can pay Kim (my boss) off so that I could skip out on work Sunday. Two nights in a row of The Features would be outstanding.

I might be there...

Does anyone know of any non-scary places to stay for ass-cheap (or free)? I don't think I'll be up to making a 4 hour trek back to knoxville at 1 a.m.

If there are any before or after show parties/gatherings, I would be interested in crashing those also.

Oh, and what's this place like? Is it nice? Usually crowded? Food? Age limit? I'll eventually need directions too.

Thanks,

Alan

this saddens me because, since i am only 18 myself, those days of missing out on the features have not been that long ago. if you can make it at all, you should come and listen from the porch-like area outside the building but beside the stage. i can't remember if they do this everytime, but last time the windows were open, leaving only a small area of wall to separate you from the features. it's no front row but, hey, you take the features any way you can get 'em. i don't think they charge cover or card you for standing out there (someone correct me if i'm wrong), so you should give it a shot.

Kinda sorta. I'm here for another 6 weeks. I feel like I never left, though, because I've already seen so many nice familiar faces and I've already gotten to see the Features. For those trashing Nashville in other posts, try moving to rural South Dakota & then coming back here- it will seem like heaven.

Thanks for the info, RD. I did a google search and found them right away. I think they're from Chattanooga. Their site has audio, but my work computer doesn't have sound right now, so I haven't listened yet.

One member is named Chris Gehrke. Do you thing he's related to David at the Slow Bar?

oh...the opening band was damn terrible, in my opinion. i watched ER during their set on the tv that was on above the stage. And could their set have lasted a little longer?!?!?! One of my friends put it best when he said: "It's kind of like listening to "dark side of the moon" and watching "the wizard of oz", but instead it's watching "ER" and listening to shit..." Seriously, their cover of "bulldog skin" by guided by voices was their best song of the night.

I've noticed something about most of the opening bands that I have seen at Features shows...they are all very formulaic and boring. All of them besides "My Tyger" who I absolutely adored, and would like to hear and see more of....

Yeah... I hate to talk poorly about them, but I really, really disliked The Flynts, a whole lot. I know it must be hard to be an opener so I tried to tap my foot or act like I was interested, but it was just too hard. I eventually gave up and watched ER throughout the rest of the set... that is, when I wasn't getting enjoyment from the drummer's facial expressions... and it was that kind of joy you get from watching something that annoys you, if you know what I mean. It's not that they really played poorly or anything, I guess it just takes a lot for me to get excited about a band when I'm waiting in anticipation for The Features.

I would like to hear an opening band and actually be interested in them.

this My Tyger news saddens me as well. i have heard good things about them but never got a chance to check them out. if only i could have made it to the may 2nd show to see the long line of not-so-adequate-bands-who-open-for-the-features broken. i, too, was guilty of watching ER through the opening band last night. i do, however, know that it must be hard to open up for a band like the features with such a big following, so i did do my best to give them the sympathetic foot-tap and head-bob combo, when i could.

I thought the opening band was good for stop-start-crunchy power pop in the same vein of Collective Soul...but that's not my cup of tea. I did give the toe tap and applause after every song because, hey, it takes guts to get up in front of anyone and perform. But darnit, ER was on and it was a REALLY good episode (the one where Kellie Martin and Noah Wyle get stabbed by that guy who looks like Adam Goldberg!). Thanks to Roger for turning off the TV when the Features started.

Hello everyone
I play bass for The Flynts- obtw, thanks for not dogging us too much. I like negative feed back actually, but we could use a little more of the constructive type (not saying the already existing feed back is destructive). We have been to together for about 8 months and really haven't played out very much and our friends won't be "honest" about our performances so please help. ph34r.gif
Our lead guitarist celebrated his 40th B-day the night of our show with the Features- so yea-he's sort of old.

I think this is the most thoughtful and non-hostile posting ever from an opening band member whose band was criticized. Props for that. And I can also say that the Flynts, while not my thing, were not painful to sit through like so many other bands.

one thing that certainly didnt help matters very much was the fact that i could not hear the lead singer at all, it also seemed that the lead singer was in need of some cold or flu medication....you guys played very well together...you just are not the right style of music for me personally....and the songs were just a tad too long, you guys played thirteen songs that night...you should have probably cut your set by five songs......it's nice to have someone accept some criticism and not get bitchy about it like bands have in the past...

I think that one of the speakers (closest to the bar) went out during our set so that might be the reason that you couldn't hear the singer, but I don't know for sure.

Wow, I definitely must give props to Rigger 007. That was quite nice. I do agree with Ray's assessment of the band. Afterall, you guys have only been together 8 months. The Features have existed in some form or another for, what, ten years or so? Just keep at it. As I said, it does take a lot to get up in front of people and perform and I respect that. smile.gif

Switch to a 4-string bass.

Play tighter, shorter sets when opening-- if people like you, best to leave them wanting more, if they don't like you, they will like you less with every song played.

why a 4 string? what difference would that make? the only thing I could think of is for the looks.
I mean I could just go out and buy another one for this band (but I'm broke) or I could just have one electric bass that will cover all my needs...

I was dead in front of you guys and I couldn't hear hardly anything the singer was singing. So that distracted me as well, I could hear any lyrics, so I was like he could be singign eminem lyrics for all I know.

Being right in front at the Boro usually makes it hard to hear the vocals. Just because of the way the speakers are set up on the sides of the stage. You are usually better off if you are at the back near the pool tables or off to the side. I heard the flynts vocals pretty well while I was playing darts.

And yeah dude, I agree basses have 4 strings. And yes, it's for the look.

I think every single person who has ever played rock guitar or bass would just get off this whole high horse of gear and just admit that guitars and amps are totally about the look.
5 string basses seem like overkill to me. You get 5 notes lower and a string that I rarely see used.
Watch Mike Watt play a couple of times: then you'll see that there is no need for the 5th string.
That's right...NO AVATAR!!!

so what your saying is that p-basses and j-basses don't have individually unique sounds?
what about SWR rigs and peavey rigs...no difference??
I think you need to research that a little more...
who is Mike Watt and where can I watch him?
thanks for your comments

as far as bass is concerned:
-5 or 6 strings basses are pointless
-as are furniture basses
-if you own a 5 or 6 string bass, just take off the low string (B?), like the guy from character did (does?)
-an ampeg amp makes all the difference inthe world
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

I was going to say both of those things, although there are decent non-ampeg amps out there. I just think 5 string basses are lame. Call me judgmental, but the moment I saw that you (Rigger_007) had a 5 string, I figured your band wasn't going to be good. I really can't give you a fair explanation as to why. There have been a couple bands I like who use 'em, but it doesn't happen often. It just seems like 5 string players want to say, "Look at me. I'm so good that 4 strings just aren't enough." There was nothing wrong with your playing. I just think anyone playing a bass with more than 4 strings, or as mentioned, a "furniture" bass, looks like a chotch.

The genius that is Mike Watt was first made known to the world through Minutemen. He's since gone and played in a million bands and a solo project. One of my favorite of his projects is called Dos, which is just Watt playing with bass with his ex-wife, who plays bass and sings. It's an amazing sound with 2 basses and voice. The shows are great, and his tours almost always include a Nashville date. Unfortunately, there wasn't one this fall.

Check out Watt at Mike Watt's Hoot Page. He runs his own website, and there's lots of cool stuff there.

Well folks, this about does it for YDDD. I'm feeling a bit dated these days. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

Okay, Keith, I totally agree about the mental expectations you get when you see a bass player with a 5-string bass. It's the same for me. I think that that expectation stems from the fact that all of the bass players who overtly flaunt their technical prowess and are very "showy" tend to play 5-strings. I don't think I need to name names. Like Keith, I'm not saying that all 5-string bass players are this way, but the stereotype does have a basis. 007, I didn't get a close enough listen to your bass playing to have an opinion on it.

A furniture bass is, quite literally, a bass that looks like a piece of furniture. It is not painted a color, and often does not have a pickguard. It just has that "wood" look, and it almost always has more than 4 strings. It is not made by one of your big names (Fender, Gibson, etc), but rather by a smaller company.

Is chotch the proper spelling, Keith? I always thought is was chatch...

well, the way i have always used chatch, chotch whatever, would mean that this would be yet another unnecessary usage of female genitalia to insult someone. not to sound like a feminist, but i have noticed a lot of negative useage in reference to one of the most beautiful things on this earth. "you are such a chatch!" "im gonna kick you in the face you big pussy,", etc...

Chach

According to William, chach, which will now be the official spelling, was derived from the popular television show "Joanie Loves Chachi." As most of you know, Chachi was played by Charles In Charge's Scott Baio. Scott Baio is a dorky guy. Therefore, dorky guys are similar to Scott Baio, and thus also similar to Chachi, which is funnier and more concise when shortened to simply, "Chach."

Therefore, players of 5-string basses are total chaches, which brings this topic almost back to where it began.

Thank you for your time and attention.

On a related note, a friend of mine was stationed in Korea for a while. He said he couldn't understand why that show was still wildly popular over there. He later learned that chachi is a Korean slang word for the male genitalia. Apparently they all thought Joanie was some super-slut who couldn't get enough affection.

That is hilarious. On a similar note, I once met some Australian travellers who thought my friend's reference to her "fanny pack" was outrageously funny. Turns out fanny=vagina/cunt/mana in Australia.

i know a guy named Mike Hunt. heh..
I was at the store one night, and this guy (who sounded pretty young) asked for the manager on duty. Well, it was Rocky...our assistant manager. He's a pretty "masculine" guy with a deep voice. Well, they ask if we can page a customer in the store whose name is Mike. So, Rocky naturally asks for the last name, and they replied that it was Hunt.
Rocky actually got on the store microphone (during Thanksgiving season...so we were super busy) and called for Mike Hunt to come to the service desk for a phone call. Kerry (a cashier) and I looked at each other for a second, making sure we heard him correctly, and then we both laughed so hard that we were crying. He got pissed, traced the guy's call, and found out that it was an ex-employee. HAHA. We get those calls approximately once a month now...I always get a laugh out of it.

i don't know about that. the instruments people choose to play say a lot about what kind of player/person they are. if i were to see a guitarist with an esp plugging it up into a crate half-stack, i'd be 99.9% sure i wouldn't like him before i heard a sound. same would go for a bassist with a fretless alembic 6 string, or a drummer with a neal peart-ish setup. there will always be a few exceptions to the rule, but not many.

Not so fast kiddies! I think the exact same lineup will be opening for Switchfoot at 12th and Porter on Wednesday, December 4th. Whether they will be called My Tyger or not, who knows? It will be the same band playing the same songs. Maybe we could all show up and give them hell for calling it quits. At least come and get some sticker memorabilia, I hear there are quite a few left.

There are quite a few My Tyger stickers left. I'll tell you what I'll do. There won't be any merchandise officially available, but if you talk to the bass player after the show, he'll give you a sticker on the sly.
