are the featujres going to be playing a show at the red rose anytime soon. ive developed a strong features following with some dear friends of mine, all of which have a hrad time getting into bars and such. red rose, or any place we could all get in without having to be 18 would be just so awesome. please let me know if there is anything coming up.

I don't think that they are gonna do a show at 'the rose ' anytime soon. I don't think that bringing in a younger group of people would be such a good idea. I'm sure there is a good reason for the 18+ shows.

that may be true, but we also have to look at the people that are going to be listening to the features, and going to the shows. these are the people that will keep them going. along with some of the older folk, but married, with kids...hmm, kinda hard sometimes to get to a bar to see a band. im just trying to get the band more followers, plus, attracting new and bigger audiences would never hurt anything

Bringing kids to the show would probably hurt more than help. I wouldn't mind a 16 and up show but i would stay home if all ages were allowed in anything other than an outdoors show. That's not fair to people like yourself. In Nashville, there used to be a place in the arcade that would make IDs with the information you provide. I don't know if it's still there or not.

I totally agree that the bringing in of a younger group of people would hurt. I think they should keep it 18+. We wouldn't want a bunch of cheesy 16yr olds running around.(I do understand that I am generalizing) It would totally kill the mood at the shows. I can't say that I would completely quit going to the shows if they are all ages. I just wouldn't be as psyched to go. Get what I'm saying. No offense to anyone.

I just moved to Tennessee from Richmond, VA and there you have to play all ages shows if you want anybody to come out, so I am biased towards all ages.  The kids are the ones who buy the music, not just come for the beer.  Although in the few weeks I have been here I have seen amazing crowds at bars.  According to my old standards, they should totally do the all ages thing.  However, the music fans of Tennessee might end up chaning my mind.

I like when they play the Red Rose (outdoors, of course), and I don't notice any difference between the crowd there and the crowd anywhere else. I think it's good for them to get a younger audience following them. I don't think it would be good to play all-ages venues all of the time, but lets face it, outdoors at the Red Rose is great!

I can understand both sides of this debate but I think its unfair to make the assumption that all 16 year olds are going to be annoying. The most annoying people I've encountered at local shows are the drunk idiots who could care less about who's playing the music. I'll take a 16 year old music fan over a 30 year old beer fan any day.

To answer the original question, all age aside. I was told that the Features are playing the Rose on the 28th of Feb. I'm not completely sure about it but, that is what I hear. The source from which it came is a reliable one.

First, if you want the features to play the Red Rose, you know who to talk to--the half man/half amazing Bingham Barnes. (i think that spelling is right). I'm sure Bingham would love to have the features, from what i can tell its not entirely simple, though.

I think all-ages shows are stupid for the most part, and i wouldn't go to one, but Nashville might be an exception. laugh as many of you will, but Next Generation brings a lot of kids dedicated to music out. These kids need to see the features. There was talk a while back of them doing a show with Nxt. Gen. mainstays Esposito, but Esposito is on sabattical.

Still, a Next Generation show should only be a once-a-year thing, and i wouldn't concentrate too hard on that audience. Rory will likely disagree with me and remind me that most record buyers are around 16. I would tell him to book a show at Next Gen then.

Esposito is on sabattical? I thought they were put out to pasture. I hope you are right though.

But anyway, I think The Features are a little old for the Next Generation crowd. I'm not sure they want to hear songs about babies, unless they are dead ones.

The Features should NEVER play at the Next Generation. It's a shitty venue and, the KIDS that hang out there are all a bunch of cheesy punks. They should stick to playing at bars. Also, the shows should stay 18+. Except, of course, the show at the Rose. That could give everyone a taste of their great music.

i don't know about that. i think it could get some kids on the cusp of being 18 to see them and become lifelong fans. also kids that hang out there have parents who dwell in the brentwood/west meadish areas of town who would be more than happy give them money to purchase features swag.

I agree with you, lawnboy.  The NeXT GENeration could do great things for the Features, if handled properly.  It could create a whole new breed of, I don't know, mod kids or something.  The Features could use an army of smart-ass, pill-taking under-18 mod kids, right?  The key would be to match them up with the right band there - Davis, are you listening?

This is kind of off-topic, I know, but I wonder how Character would go over at a place like Next Generation?

emo. as if it could get worse than a bunch of ex-punk whiny bastards dying their hair back to brown and removing all their safety pins so as to heavily orchestrate the most recent time they've been dumped, you bring up the juliana theory...a band who found that it wasn't enough to get emotional over their coffee-shop-journal-entry-writing girlfriends, so they started writing about jesus. dear jamie, i know you're too good to be into this.

as for the next generation thing...i was the last person of all my friends to turn 18 and i had to have a fake id to see trans am and i got caught and i was sad. i think it's damn cool if the features wanna play a show that their younger fans can get in to. i wouldn't throw character at them as one must learn to crawl before they walk...but these all-agers will grow up to be just as wordly and wise as the rest of you if you let them start now.

on the management discussion, i know nothing except that it sounds like some girls are about to throw down over this 'rory' person. i had a locked in vote on another for the most eligible bachelor running around features' shows, but 'rory' seems to be all the girls everywhere are talking about lately.

Emo is a tricky subject. If you asked me, 'Do you like emo?' I would certainly answer no. However, some bands that I really like have somehow picked up the 'emo' label - Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Esposito, even Lifeboy, for goodness sake. So I can't really deal in generalities. Emo cliches sure are fun to make fun of, though - 'weepy emo fags' = one of the best 'adj+adj+noun' groupings ever.

I don't think that Lifeboy is emo. Esposito was pretty emo, but they were great and Dave never cried on stage so I'm ok with that. He's into all that shit though. All I've got to say is these pussies need to grow a pair and learn to rock. We're talking about rock shows not funeral wakes. No reason for tears.

Geometry Rock, Algebra II Rock, Calculus Rock....
Jamie,
Math rock is sort of like metal without distortion. It's usually really fast, really complicated, and really fucking boring. Lots of weird time signature changes, that sort of thing. Don Caballero is Math Rock. Ask Freezetag for some of their stuff if you are interested. I think Slint is also considered Math Rock.

while i don't attach importance to this whole genre-ascribing desire, alot of bands i like are dubbed 'math rock' bands including stuff like don caballero (who are straight up amazing) and of course, trans am. this distinction is appropriated to music that doesn't follow standard time delineations, it's ususally very fast, incorporating various instruments and off-color manipulation of said instruments, and when lyrical, its all this futuristic cerebral type stuff. for the love of god, get yourself into futureworld. jamie, now officially my favorite person alive, i thought you liked it?
oh and neuboy, you know what's *really* boring? elevator music. like your precious stereolab.

very funny stuff, people. I hate the music that falls into the 'emo' catergory, and I hate even more all the kids who live the lifestyle--for example: half of MTSU's RIM department. but the idea of being emotional about music i don't hate. Westerberg could be emo for chrissake--'Sixteen Blue'? great song, but even greater 'cause its not melodramatic like the crap heretofore discussed.

Yes, I do like Futureworld.  Trans Am is math rock?  I would probably have put them in the ubiquitous 'post rock' category.  But you know, as Michael Stipe said, labels are for canned foods.  Categorizing things gives me a headache.

About the RIM program...
You guys don't know how good you have it.  In the music business program in which I am enrolled (at a school which shall remain nameless), everyone except me and Keith want to be in country or Christian music.  While all music business programs are somewhat shady by nature, at least at MTSU, you have a sizeable percentage that at least want to work in rock music, and don't have their lips glued to Brad Paisley's ass.
