TOPIC: Sept 20 upcoming show

I know nothing about the band and venue announced for Sept 20.
Can anyone shed any light on it all?

Who is Lume? What kind of music are they? Are they local? Will they open? Are they bigger than the Features?

What about Blue Sky Court? Where is it? With what venue would you compare it?

Is that enough questions?

The band Lume has been around for what a couple years now. They are local. They wish they were Radiohead (in my opinion). I would hope to God that they open since they don't have that huge of a following that I know of. They list their major influences as being "Jeff Buckley, Travis, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Kent, Weezer, Stone Temple Pilots, At The Drive-In, John Coltrane, The Posies, The Rembrandts, Coldplay." You can listen to some of their music at http://www.mp3.com/lume

Blue Sky Court is on 4th Avenue in the building that was formerly The 8th Day. A little up the street from 328. The sound is pretty decent, however the atmosphere is crappy.

I've never heard Lume, but I've seen a lot of their stickers around town. Many of which have been defaced in order to read 'lame', maybe it's a clue.

That seems like a pretty good indication of what to expect.

I saw Lume at 328 about a year ago (opening for Scatter the Ashes...it's...I have "friends" in that band) and I thought that they weren't that bad. Aside from the "Lume Girls" (about 10 blondes in homemade Lume T-shirts) they seemed to have it all together. The Travis/Coldplay influence is very very very noticeable; the lead singer was rockin Fran Healy's Britrock Mohawk. I would imagine that they are opening...

Okay, here's my perspective. You can take or leave it, as always.

Blue Sky Court: Has been blowing up lately (it's still a very new club, and doesn't even have a proper sign out front yet). It's exactly 2 doors down from 328. They have benefitted greatly from the Exit/In's closure, getting some pretty big shows. I went there one time. This place has alot of potential, but when I went there about a month ago it was a SHITHOLE! It was big enough, I guess, but it was very under construction, and had NO AIR CONDITIONING. This is unacceptable during the summer. I will go there to see the Features, but that's about it until they finish their work and get some AC.

Lume: Short for 'luminous', for those of you keeping score at home. These guys WORSHIP Jeff Buckley. In fact, the ad for their album at a store I went to said, "Do you think that the passing of Jeff Buckley was the single greatest tragegy in the history of music?" I guess if you like Buckley, you'll like these guys, though I can definitely hear some Radiohead. These guys have built up a big following here in Nashville in the last year, but they'll definitely still be opening for the Features.

If anyone cares (and doesn't have the capabilities of listening to mp3s on their computer), I noticed that Lume's new CD is on a listening booth at Turtles Music on West End. I listened for a little while. I wasn't blown away or anything, but it was alright on first listen. I'll definitely give 'em a chance on the 20th. Plus, I'll want good position for the Features when they pack the joint as always.

It's definitely not all ages. I'm just not sure whether it's 18+ or 21+. I'll try to find out.

One of my friends tried to do the fran mohawk. however, instead of having it be a true mohawk, he trimmed all of his hair except for the front. he looked like a rhino. once again, another example of why some people shouldnt cut their own hair.

Steering this conversation back to topic (remember, the Features?), who all plans to be there for the show on the 20th?

I answer that I should most definitely be there, providing I have a ride which I should. Hopefully I'll bring some newbies along with me.

Lume is a Belmont band. Enough said.
The same could be said about Murphreesboro bands and it would be equally as ignorant. If Belmont bands have a particular sound, I guarantee that Lume are the furthest thing from it. Give em a chance. Their last show at Blue Sky Court was off the hook!

I sometimes wonder if our conversations about other local bands hurt potential fans coming here to learn more about the Features. I hope this isn't the case.

I feel the very same way, YDDD. I hereby vow not to say anything in the neighborhood of negative about the Features' opening acts. Imagine, that Lume fan was probably just here to learn more about this new band that he/she was going to see on the 20th. Instead, they had to see their favorite band getting dissed. That's sad for me to think about. I'm sorry. But honestly, I like Lume. I meant no harm.

I like a good sharing of opinions on relevant topics.

Lumefan also seemed to have a positive attitude about it, so it's fair. We've handled discussing them better than the likes of Senryu (who had a member post and be really cool), but I think it's a good way to keep the fanbase growing. It keeps the peace better on the board. I'll try to be nice when I'm typing show reviews.

You guys are right. I probably shouldn't have said what I did. I have never heard Lume, so I wasn't dissing them per se. However, I have seen several bands made up mostly/completely of Belmont students at both Belmont showcases and other venues, and I'm yet to like any of them. JamieCarroll, you have been with me to some of these showcases, so you know what I mean. I am a Belmont student and have been to our so-called "Best of the Best" showcase which is supposed to represent the best Belmont bands of every genre, and I get embarassed. There are individual students at Belmont (JamieCarroll for example) who are in great bands of their own, but in my experience "Belmont bands" have not impressed me. I'll see Lume here in a few days and maybe they'll be an exception.

But yeah Yadadada, slamming every band who has ever played with The Features (yes, other than Fluid Ounces) may not be the most positve thing for our little community.

Point taken, Keith. I know what you mean about "Belmont Bands." And we can talk all night about how terrible most of them are. I just don't want to get into the habit of slinging mud here, in this "public" place. I wasn't trying to say that we're all assholes here just for expressing our honest opinions; expressing honest opinions is one of the things that makes this board great. I don't know what I'm trying to say...I guess I just feel bad for the bands that get dissed. I surely don't want this board to be some plain vanilla land of pablum and happy-talk, where no one ever says anything negative.

Obviously by the whole "chalking/defacing" post by the myserious you, we know that the band disapproves of downing other bands. I'd say here on the board it's the best thing we can do for the Features, aside from FIST and selling our souls to Parrish Yaw.

I was a bit confused by Keith's Fl Oz comment. Are you a fan, or are you pointing out my fandom, or what?

With the show just a few days away, I just wanted to express my excitement to see The Features play again. I can't wait until I actually live in Middle Tennessee, that way I can see them play with a lot less difficulty. I will be at this show with TF, and I plan on being at The Boro next Thursday as well. I would be more than happy to skip any amount of school for a good Features show.

That's funny. I don't remember asking what you thought. Hehe.

Anyway, I agree that they have played very well lately...But then again, I never really have seen them play at even a mediocre level. I will say that the energy I get filled with at every show only increases, and that is definitely a part of their appeal to me.
