TOPIC: Songs that shouldn't have died
Posted  Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 5:22 AM
Post 1 of 50
Working on the lyrics page for the discography site (it's 2/3ds done, by the way), I've been listening to alot of bootlegs, and there's some songs that I feel died before they were due. Namely Don't Lie to Me and Burma. Alot of songs, like Jurley, Your Smile, and Paid to Think, I'd love to see back in rotation, but these no longer have the same feel as the band, and I can see why they went. I don't find this to be the case with Burma and Don't Lie to Me... anyone else have songs that they think were unduely killed off?

I also think that 33 1/3, Temporary Blues, and The Design are being played far too infrequently... these seem next on the hit list, and that makes me sad. sad.gif

That said, anyone with better recordings than I have that can decipher Don't Lie to Me or Burma's lyrics, I'd love that...

I was tired of 33 1/3 when it started to creep out of rotation, but now I'd like it back.

Burma, Temporary Blues, and Harold were never favorites of mine, and they were never missed.

Jurley and Your Smile would be great as a "once-a-year" treat...as long as I'd be there to catch them.

I'd love to see a return, if only occasional, of Willie and the Willigers, That's Me, Stick Together (without the LIAB verses), and maybe Captain Williams.

The cover that should come back is Hungry Like the Wolf.

I think the only surviving recordings of Don't Lie to Me is from Lauren's tape of 3-15-01. It's probably all you'll find.

Burma I think was on 5-02-02.

i think that "i won't let you down" is a great song because there's so little to it. i also wish "situation gone bad" would return, and that 1 minute one from the last red rose show.

"Don't lie to me" has always been right near the very top for me, in terms of the Features' best songs. I know it's slower, and doesn't rock as much, but I think it's just a beautiful song, and so yes, of course I think it died too young.

"Burma," "Temporary Blues," and "Harold" would all three also be in my top 10 Features songs. These are some of the Features' very best, in my opinion, and I just cannot understand why they would lose interest in them. "The Design" would go into this category as well - it's an amazing song.

As far as "33 1/3" goes, I've always liked it, but never really loved it. I think it's a great "rare treat."

My only guess with "Harold" is that it is a very personal song that was very relevant at the time it was introduced, but that time has passed. Because it is such an amazing song, I can't see too many other reasons to ditch it. That said, it makes a nice occasional treat, but I wonder how many times they've played it in the past year without someone distinctly and personally asking for it prior to the show (and by someone I mean you jamie, at least I remember that was the case at Blue Cats last August). It'd be refreshing to see them just play it on their own, and I think that may have happened when they played it last December at the Red Rose. I remember being shocked, anyway.

I would love to hear "Burma", "The Design", "Temporary Blues", "Situation Gone Bad", and "The Damage is Done" more often.

On the other hand, I would be perfectly content to not hear "33 1/3" and "Harold" ever again.

Gosh, sorry to express my honest opinions. Yet another day that I get beat up on on this message board...

I said I would have nothing wrong with not hearing those two songs live again. When they do play these two songs, I'm not like "oh my god, why are they playing this fucking song"... I'm not hatin' on the songs, I just wouldn't be mad if those songs went the same way as "Your Smile" and all the other old songs mentioned within this thread.

even though i think both songs are absolutely great, i was glad to see that the band gave "demons" and "kari-anne" a break from rotation at the vandy show. i think i was just getting tired of them.

on the other hand, i wouldn't be upset if the following songs got thrown into heavier rotation: "stagecoach," "harold," "the damage is done," "the design," "burma," "serious," and "situation gone bad." i also am a big fan of "attention" (though i think it would work better in that "special treat" category).

"33 1/3", "Kari-Ann" and "Exorcising Demons" are the three that I wish would be thrown into rare treat status for a little while. "Exorcising Demons" does have the new crowd participation feature, so that makes it the one I most want to hear of those three.

"Damage Is Done" "Oh My Love" "Stagecoach" and "Temporary Blues" have to start getting played more, as well as "The Design" "Situation Gone Bad" and the "Pants Getting Tighter Song." The "PGTS" is a really rollicking song and deserves a second chance.

From the old catalogue, I would be overjoyed if "Paid To Think" or "Jurley" were played at least one more time (at a concert I was at).

To remedy these problems, the Features should simply play 20 songs, go take a 15 minute breather (mainly so Rollum's thumbs can reattach themselves) and then come back and play 20 more songs.

I really really wish that more shows would come along that would take up two CDs to record.

However, let's get honest with this thread, folks.
After 4 years of religiously following this band, they have attacked my appetites such that I can really only be happy with what they give and that's all. When there were no bootlegs to be found anywhere, their sets were only 12 or so songs long, even when they were the headliner. I always only wanted more. They've gradually increased this, and so my thirst for more has been tempered and conditioned. Add to it the fact that a full-length has been rumored the whole time I've been following, and I realize that the only way to take this band, for now, is just to try and be content with what is given.

I can't even tell they're the same song. I've heard it live, then heard the recorded version, and had no idea I had heard it before. I actually prefer the recorded version to the live one. If I still can't recognize it, I'd probably prefer them to choose something else that gets less frequent play time.

If anything, my liking it makes people here think it's over-rated when they finally hear it for themselves. Generally speaking, my opinion is a big ad on the side of a bus that says, "DISAGREE WITH ME!"

i loved "harold" since i heard a recording of it for the first time. i've only heard it live once, and it was great. of course, who in their right mind wouldn't want to model themselves after jc? i'm not disputing that. "harold" and "stagecoach" are always in constant battle for the title of my favorite features song.

I like Harold because I like the song on my own, JC liking it has nothing to do with it, I don't believe I have ever heard the song live. It's possible that I may have heard it at my first few features shows when I didn't know the songs. Though, I'm not for sure... Anyway, I love the opening for the song harold, it seems like it draws u in slowly for somethign special. It made me curious about the song, because most of The Features songs start right into things! But I lke Harold because its so laid back and it takes its time.

I've liked Harold ever since the Blue Cats show last August when they played it. I didn't even know about jamie's obsession at the time. He was, admittedly, the reason they played it that night, to the extent that he asked Matt to play it before the show. Nonetheless, I loved it right then when it was played, and for no reason other than it being great. It has a good semi-narrative and message and a terrific melody as far as I'm concerned. Features song that most affects me emotionally other than Your Smile (which I love less and less each day, but whose sentiments still tug at my heart more than anything else).
