I was looking through the Nov. issue of SPIN that I stole from my Y because of the article on Elliott Smith and I noticed a weird caption next to a picture of the Donnas (p.117): "See us standing here, by the record ma-chine". Is the captioner a rabid Features fan? Is it a coincidence? Is the Features lyric actually referencing some other song that I'm not aware of? I am a loser for taking the time to wonder these things?

Very interesting.

I can shed no light on the background of that caption, but I do want to take a moment to say that, even though I don't know you personally Lauren, you appear to be anything but a loser.

I subscribe to SPIN, and I keep waiting to see a big picture of The Features on the "Bands to Watch" page...or at least a review! After they were in Blender, I thought for sure I'd see them in the other major magazines soon.

Oh, and speaking of SPIN, I love that Dave Eggers writes a column for them now. He's so awesome. Anyone have his newest book of short stories? I've been meaning to check it out.

I've just Googled a bunch of variations of that lyric and have found no matches. Maybe it is some other song I'm unaware of, because frankly, I find it highly unlikely someone from SPIN is going to reference the Features in an article about the Donnas...much less an unreleased song than any of their new stuff (despite the fitting situation). Interesting...maybe someone should shoot them an email? Probably won't get an answer but it can't hurt...

Heh- thanks, I just realized that my last 2 posts mentioned my loser self. No worries, I'm not having a crisis of confidence, I just like to make fun of being Jacksonvillian. Not to be confused with being a Jacksonvillain.

Anyway, YES, I love that column too & the November one is particularly relevant to our little community: "...we hope that someday we will outgrow our need to separate ourselves from others via our taste in music, or books, or shrubbery, or anything else. We hope we will live to see art as a uniting force, not a divisive one..."

Well, there's "I Love Rock & Roll"....which is basically the same song only from the girl point of view, and the guy was 17 instead of 16.
That's so NA.
