TOPIC: The Features on MTV2's Subterranean TONIGHT!!!
Posted  Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 4:32 PM
Post 1 of 97
The Features will be on MTV2's Subterranean this Sunday (5/23/04) night at 11pm central. Look for an interview and a chance to see "The Way It's Meant To Be" in full living color.

You'll also notice when you go to mtv2.com there's a pic of Matt and Rollum advertising the upcoming show. Pretty cool.

Anyway, I will totally send someone a blank tape and postage. Hook me up guys!

Well there's a series of pictures about halfway down. There one of those. It's on the main page.

Yesterday, the pic was only on the main page, but now they've updated the Subterranean page to include the same pic.

Isn't it going to be on at midnight EASTERN time? They only list 12:00am, and because the entire world apparently revolves around New York, I'm assuming that means 11pm here.

I'm inviting myself over to my buddy's house to watch it. I'll definitely tape it.

I was confused too, so I scrolled through the MTV2 on-air schedule. And that appears to say that it starts at 12am the night of Sunday the 23rd. Which means it really starts early morning of Monday the 24th. But it's less confusing in Central Time Zone- it starts at 11pm Sunday night.

just saw a commercial on mtv2 about tomorrow night's show--they showed about a 10 second clip of the video. (it was weird, i'm over at my parents' house and my mom said that she had mtv2 on 'just in case they show a commerical for the show,' then about 30 seconds later the commerical came on. it was rad)

It was indeed very surreal to see Matt Pelham & Co. being interviewed with an MTV logo hovering over their heads. How did this work out? Did Universal set up the interview or were they contacted by Subterranean? I'm glad that the first question asked was about how long they've been together. The word needs to get out that the Features are not copying Hot Hot Heat and the garage rock revival.

Matt said he hates the batman-style words in the video, but that he was outvoted when it came to taking them out. He said the band is a democracy, but Rollum pointed out that Matt gets veto power because he writes the songs (similar to the Lamarcq radio interview). The faceless interviewer made a lame comment about split votes resulting in a tag team competition and matt mumbled something about mud wrestling.

I would beg to differ that he hates them... he was afraid it made the video campy instead of cool, and when Jim Shearer asked him about that, he said it was a good thing that he got out voted.

That's what everybody coments on, is those words... the funny thing is, is the final result is a compromise between us... I took out more words that were originally in there.

The one I miss, and is actually on my director's reel cut, is the part were goes "ahhhhhhhhhh call the doctor" I had A's flying out of his mouth... it looked really cool.

Everytime I watch the approved version of that video I feel like it needs to be there...

I'll show ya a version without them sometime... it drags... they were added to move the video along.

Everyone has an opinion about the words so I guess it's doing its job... it's standing out from the crowd.

You'd be foolish to pay for it. There was about 5 minutes of Features related stuff, including the video. I can paraphrase it...

MTV: So, how long have you been together?

Matt: '98 or so.

MTV: So you were a supporting act when you played in New York?
Parrish: Who?

MTV: What?

Parrish: I'm sorry, did you say something?

MTV: I didn't say anything.

Parrish: Don't listen to me. I'm on mescaline - I've been spaced out all day.

MTV: Did you say you were on mescaline?

Parrish: I did, indeed. Very much so.

MTV: Roll the video.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

Did Anyone else think that Jim Shearer was a HORRIBLE interviewer? I mean he kept, like, answering his own questions for them, and then they really had nothing to respond to so they were just like "yep" or "right." Bah! But regardless of the horrible interview style I still wish they had talked to them more =) Matthew was so adorable in his little orange tiger sweater vest. I love that sweater! He wore it at the last show in Atlanta too. He has to be the cutest dad ever. I laughed when he was talking about his kids and they kept panning down to his wedding ring like "Sorry Ladies! He's taken!" hahaha. But overall it was great to see them getting some recognition.

Why not making it a recurring event? Pancakes every Saturday!

Also, when are we going to start "Features Message Board Poker Night"?

i don't know if this has already been referred to, but you can watch the whole features interview bit from subterranean on the subterranean webpage now, on mtv2.com...also if anyone digs the sadly forgotten glories of bands like suede, longpigs, and marion--check out the veils video for 'the tide that left and never came back' on the same page there...it's a cracking good tune, i think, although the singer appears to be a bit of a daisy...oh yeah, the song was produced by bernard butler, if that helps...and it should. cheers!

Yes, I really liked that song. There aren't nearly enough sailors-in-the-belly-of-a-whale themed videos anymore.
That's so NA.

is that what was going on there? i just found it all a little disconcerting, whatever it was supposed to be about...i actually managed to find their debut 'the runaway found' at tower recently, and i think it's excellent for the most. they're yet young, so there's potential there...

I'd say it was set in a belly of a whale in the Mediterranean Sea... that would explain the French and Russian sailors... obviously referencing the tragic accident when the Georges Leygues ran into the K-461 Volk
Soviet sub on 9/15/71, sending all crew memebrs to their death. Reports said narwhal whales were seeing feasting on the dead...

I suppose that's what was going on. I might sample a few more songs and then pick up the album.

I was watching 120 Minutes (I mean Subterranean) and was thinking about all the other fans of other bands whose videos were played, huddled around their TV sets, waiting to see the bands that they've loved forever finally get their shot at some kind of mainstream success. I wonder what they thought of The Features.
That's so NA.

Very nice interview, Keith. I enjoyed it.

On a related note, if any of you are ever going to have a picture of yourself (or your band) published but you don't have a good picture to use, CALL ME. I'll do it cheap-as-in-free with above average results.

No, it's not a bad picture of you. I just think that "one of the best rock/pop bass players in town" should have a more professional photo. I'm not saying that I could've done better than stopforme's picture. I always like to play around with my camera so I was just trying to ride on the coattails of your success and create more opportunities for myself.

you can watch the features interview segments from subterranean by clicking here. once at the site, just click on either matt's face or "the features on subterranean".

while watching it for the first time, i found the whole thing to be quite surreal.

oops! it seems as though someone has already mentioned this. nevermind.

I just got around to watching the MTV2 clip. Any reason the boys look so bored? What a strange set-up- totally uncomfortable environment. Fun to watch anyway.
