TOPIC: The Infamous Mississippi Album
Posted  Monday, May 13, 2002 at 9:55 AM
Post 1 of 10
In the spring of 1998, the Spongebath Records website was reporting that the Features had 'just finished recording their first full-length album with Jackson, Mississippi producer, Richard Dortch.'  The site said that the album would be released in the autumn of that year.  Obviously, this recording was never released.  Does anyone know what happened to it?  More importantly, does anyone know what songs would have been on it?  Finally, will its contents appear in the complete Features anthology that is bound to appear after the band becomes a huge, international success?

I believe that the four songs from the spongebath sampler cds (D-Con, Anti-Gravity, Paid to Think, & Engine Debris) were meant for the Mississippi album... that's all I know for sure, though.

the four songs on the Spongebath sampler were from the Dortch sessions. Richard Dortch also produced the second Fl Oz record btw. anyway, i think the reason this record was scrapped is because Matt Pelham and/or Richard Williams (ex-Spongebath head) were unhappy with it as a whole. take it from someone who has heard this album, it sounds fantastic (the Spongebath sampler songs weren't mastered properly) and could have easily been a full-length features record. the 'Thursday' single was also culled from those sessions. the other tunes i remember are Armani Suede, rabbit march, roger's theme, your smile, and the 'step to the left, step to the right/oh it's dynamite song!' they were all kickass versions by the full original 5 piece band.

I'm assuming that the versions of 'Armani Suede' and 'Roger's Theme' that would have been on this album are not the same versions that appeared on the self-titled EP. Is this correct? Also, I've heard studio versions of older songs like 'Extension Cord' and 'Treehouse Club.' Were these songs also planned for the album?

yes extension cord and treehouse club were the others i forgot. and no the versions that were on their original EP were NOT the same from the Dortch sessions...the Dortch sessions are much denser, warmer and thicker...much better representation of the Features.

It would seem so.

I believe this material would have really made for a great release. The other two recording sessions that were scrapped have good reason, but that collection of songs would have been a good move for the Features.
