I didn't sense a weird vibe, really. My friend Ross, who probably does more to keep the Lexington music scene vital than anybody else, was right up front doing his Pogo Dance of Enthusiasm. He's probably the guy Todd saw. In general, there was not a whole lot of wild dancing and flailing about.
However, I did notice that most of the people there were standing up, bobbing up and down in a way that vaguely suggested rhythm. The place was pretty crowded, and there's always a line for the one-holer bathrooms there. This probably accounts for the cluster of patrons at the rear of the bar. (Y'know, you can't buy beer...)
The sound at High on Rose is always shitty. I don't know who the guy was who came up front to tell the bands to 'bring it down,' but after the Features made some adjustments, you could actually hear the vocals. I was not wearing earplugs, and I thought the sound quality improved immeasurably with 'Thursday.'
Most of the crowd was, in fact, there to see de Janeiro's first show. (These guys have been involved in various noteworthy Lexington bands over the years, and they have lots of friends/fans in the local music scene.) I thought they sounded great, personally.
I was there primarily to see the Features, and I told all of my friends who were coming to see de Janeiro to be sure not to miss the Features' set. Everyone I talked to loved them. As my friend Jennifer put it: 'Oh my God! Those guys f***ing rocked!!' So, I think we won some new recruits up here. A couple of my friends are playing the new EP regularly on the college radio station.
The Features are returning in March when they'll be playing Lynagh's, a much better venue (soundwise) with a larger crowd capacity. Anyone from TN coming up? It would be nice to meet some of the home team, make friends from another town, etc., etc., yadda yadda.
Lastly, it is a distinct pleasure to be involved in a web-based discussion forum that values grammar and punctuation. Bless you. Bless you all!
