TOPIC: The Perfect Song for The Features to Cover
Posted  Saturday, March 22, 2003 at 11:06 AM
Post 1 of 36
I know the topic has been discussed before, but after much discussion and debate with other features fans, the conclusion has been reached that:

"I am the Fly" by Wire

is indeed the perfect song for the features to cover.
It's got a great bass line for Roger. The drums are fun and Rollum-esque.
The lyrics are clever, and I'm sure Matt would enjoy them. The guitar part has some cool effects, some of which could be expanded on with some strange insect-like dots and loops from Parrish's moog.

This song must be covered by The Features...well, it would at least make my day.

Or they could cover "The Fly" by U2 or "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd or we could just name a whole bunch of songs we like.

Hey, I happen to teach a class in film, media, and culture at Columbia, and I think that my incites into Mr. McCluen have a lot of validity.

Good for you, however, you misspelled "insites". It's nothing personal, it's just that this topic has been run into the ground over and over. It's not a question of validity, it's just that this thread always turns into
"Quote from someone @ Aug 42 2059, 8:92PM"
Hey!  I just thought of a great song!  Please affirm that you agree with me that this indeed is a great song!  Oh yeah, there's this band called the Features.  They play great songs!!!  Maybe the two can go together!?!?!?!

and unless jamiecar--Roger or some other band member reads this thread and decides to practice it, which they have yet to have done in the entire history of the board, then it just becomes a pipe dream.

The topic of suggesting cover songs for the Features is irrelevant.

Thanks for pointing out the error...easily edited. The quote was from a Woody Allen film, which you must not have caught considering you replied directly to it saying "good for you. "

I'm sorry I brought up such an irrelevant topic like songs The Features could cover. I guess we can go back to discussing cigarettes and cars and how you are pissed at the Flaming Lips. People come here to spout whatever they want to, the only relevant thing here being that we're all features fans. The next time someone gets grilled about relevancy I'd love to smack those doing the grilling with a sock full of manure.

I prefaced my comment by saying the topic was already run into the ground. However, no one had mentioned this song yet, and I know there exist other Wire fans on the board.

All are under the "Misc." forum, where irrelevance is more readily tolerated.

This is a run-on sentence.

This one needs a comma.

True, but that doesn't make it relevant.

You're right. The sentence needs a comma, and the other one is a run-on. However, this is a message board, not a paper, and I write how I might when typing an email.

You have magically sucked all the fun out of this message board.
So if you're going to be a grammatical asshole, log off the message board, pick up a copy of your random Faulkner novel, and have a ball. He has enough run-ons for you I'm sure.

The reason I posted the topic under general and not misc. is that it pertained to the features.

Chopped Liver has made a pretty good suggestion for a Features cover song. His/her choice was well-supported. CL seems to have a lot to add to this board and I hope he/she continues to post.

YaDaDaDa is being a dick.

I happen to be listening to the Flaming Lips right now and I can easily picture the boys covering "Fight Test".

Perhaps. I think this whole thing could be solved with a new forum titled, "Name a great song". In this proposed forum, all songs that are great could be mentioned and discussed. Then its likeness to the Features could be debated and polled, and we could all just agree with each other all day long.

Chopped Liver, maybe you ought to to put some quotation marks around that "Annie Hall" quote (great one, by the way) so that you will cease to be mistunderstood. It's amazing that people actually think that a Columbia professor would be a features fan and would talk on their message board. I mean, I guess it's possible, but someone who considers themselves an expert on Marshall McCluen would probably think themselves too sophisticated for a message board.

I think "I am the Fly" would be an excellent cover. "Ex Lion Tamer" wouldn't be bad either.

well i know of at least one message board member who would find nothing wrong with that choice..... wink.gif

i always thought "fragile" or "mannequin " would be a good choice from "pink flag". my favorite song on "pink flag" though would either have to be "ex-lion tamer" or "reuters".......

wire is such a great band.

Just out of curiosity, is that Columbia University in New York or is it Columbia State Community College down the road in Columbia, TN? (No, I'm not being a jerk... it's a sincere question.)

For what it is worth, I loved the reference.

Agreed. Nora Ephron's work owes alot to Annie Hall (and to Lubitsch's romantic comedies too), and comes out a shadow of its inspirations.

Honestly, I think that the features should do "Like a woman" or "Like a Rolling Stone"... I think both of those would be awesome choices. They both have great keyboard/organ parts and I feel like the drums on "Rolling Stone" fit Rollum a bit. Granted, I'm on a Dylan kick right now, but still.

edit: "I want you" would be another good one.

I think a great song is "Jenny from the Block" and NKOTB's "The Right Stuff." My oh my, are those great songs.

On a related note to something totally irrelevant, the other day I was walking down the street. I found a dime on the ground. The tails side was up so I didn't pick it up. I heard somewhere that it was bad luck. I believe that superstition just works for pennies, but not for other coins. I could be wrong though. I think the best coin is the quarter. It's the main one that I ever carry. Can you believe that some people throw their coins in the trash?? That's amazing. These crazy kids today.

Hey another great song is that one where Pink Floyd does all that weird stuff and David Gilmour plays those fat blues licks and the lyrics are sung with that British accent. I also like when Rick Dees played "Disco Duck." Can you believe that he became a radio DJ after that?? Wow!

I like dimes best because they're so much smaller than the nickel, yet they're worth twice as much.

I'm not a real superstitious person, but my mama is.. so she can sometimes get on my nerves with it. I think a great cover would be "Mankind" by Pearl Jam (as sung by guitarist Stone Gossard) from No Code. Matt Pelham and Stone have a similar sounding voice and it is a pretty peppy song as far as Pearl Jam's music goes.
