TOPIC: Who do the Features sound like?
Posted  Saturday, December 30, 2006 at 11:15 PM
Post 1 of 12
As I was deleting a few dozen spam threads, I accidentally deleted a legitimate thread. Sorry about that.

The gist of it was this: someone said The Features sound like Jet and The Killers. Several people disagreed. Carligula suggested they sound like OKGo, Hot Hot Heat, and Franz Ferdinand. More people disagreed. Someone said they sound like The Features. Then Keith said they sound like the Talking Heads meets a bunch of other bands.

Continue the discussion...

i think talking heads is a fairly obvious reference point, and some people say the cars (but i couldn't tell you what the cars sound like so i don't know). there's nothing else that is immediately springing to mind--which is indicative of the features' originality. they sound like good music.

this might be crazy-talk, but there's something about the vibe, if not the music itself, of arcade fire that reminds me of the features. there may be some similiarity in the perspectives & personas of win butler & matthew pelham. or maybe i'm a lunatic. or it could be both.

I hear as much of The Kinks as Talking Heads in the music, if not more. And what little Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson I've heard, they too are obvious influences but not as apparent as the Kinks and Heads.

There's a dude named Win? Is his less loved brother named Lose?

And, I agree with Digsy in regards to their sound. I think the strongest similarity is with the Talking Heads. But, other than that I have a hard time comparing them to anything.

Yes, as a matter of fact, he does. And he has another brother named Draw.

The Features sounded like the Cars early on, but not so much anymore. I agree with most of the observations you all have made. The main one I don't hear is Arcade Fire.

And Keith, congratulations on finally passing damon.

well, if you read my post at all, what i was trying to say is that they don't sound alike...but that there was something in the moooooods and viiiibes of both bands that gave me the same sort of feeling. the intensity, coupled with a wide-eyed childlike whimsy, perhaps. the music, of course, sounds very different. anyway, i shouldn't have bothered, but this place is such a morgue i was just trying to post something.

Andrew, I hear it. The first time I heard the Arcade Fire was on a mix CD you made me and the first thing I thought was "this sounds like the Features."
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.
