TOPIC: 100 Albums you should remove from your collection

Check This Out. Some of it will piss you off, some of it will make you laugh, and some of it you will have to admit is true.

Some particularly bold ones:

#3 Nirvana - Nevermind
Yeah, yeah - I realize that this is the one that broke grunge's doors wide open and made Seattle a place to be reckoned with. Are we sure that's good? At best, Nevermind is an overrated Pixies tribute album that was blasted from every goddamn dorm room I skulked past in college (instead of the Pixies). Not to mention the fact that alt-rawk stations have bled this album of any magic it might have had by overplaying it. Fair to middling at best, but not the Second Coming. And "Smells Like Teen Spirit" IS the "Stairway to Heaven" of our generation, folks. This is the record you will embarrass your children with.

#25 Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
People sometimes ask me, "President Bush, why are you always railing against the Beastie Boys?" Well, let me tell you -- they fucking suck.

#74 The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band
Nearly killing rock and roll in the name of 'psychedelia' by adding strings and excessive production. You pretentious Limeys, Sinatra had been doing the same thing for years!!

Read it and discuss...
I TOTALLY AGREE!

I can see your reasons for getting rid of those albums (although I've never heard Sgt. Pepper...yes call me a britrock blashphemer). I really do like Nevermind (it was a cassette tape staple in my car last year) and I own Paul's Boutique although I haven't digested it yet. But I really like Hello Nasty and all their other singles. I thoroughly enjoy the Beastie Boys as well. Unlike my love of Ludacris (which is based on comedy), I actually like the Beastie Boys, but they aren't for everyone (except Hey Ladies! which everyone should love).

I recently made my pile of cd's to get rid of (there are only 20 or so). Unlike Keith, who actually has classic albums in his pile, I have crap. 3 Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fiona Apple, 2 Matchbox 20, 2 Marcy Playground, 2 Spice Girls, Meredith Brookes, Barenaked Ladies, Eve 6, Blink 182, Lit, Offspring, Chumbawamba, Counting Crows, Hootie & the Blowfish, Citizen King, No Doubt and Better Than Ezra. In middle school, I really liked CD's...so if I liked a song, I bought the album. Oh the scars...the scars...

I didn't make the list. I just found it on the net. I think Blood Sugar Sex Magic was a great album (I hate every thing else the Chilli Peppers have done). I also think Fiona Apple, though an annoying personality, has made two really good albums. And I would NEVER say that shit about Nirvana, The Beatles, or The Beastie Boys.

Hey, DS, good call on the Matchbox twenty, BNL, and Hootie. I have to say that getting rid of Marcy Playground, Counting Crows, and RHCP (if they included Mother's Milk and/or Blood Sugar) would be a BIG mistake. Just my opinion, though. I understand how one can get burned-out on some stuff. I really hesistate to whittle down my collection, because I never know when my tastes will come full circle. Hell, I still own all my Pantera CDs for that very reason.

The list that started this topic is complete, 100% crap. At least, the first 10 or so are. I couldn't get any further than that because I vomited in disgust all over my keyboard and mouse and could no longer scroll down the page. I guess it's cool to have the exact oposite opinion of most people.

By the way, who is Captain Beefheart?

Sorry, I lost my head for a minute. That's what I get for not reading the whole post heh heh wink.gif

I like Fiona Apple's music but I have listened to the CD about once in the past 5 years so I will burn it and sell it. I also like all the Chili Peppers singles (pre-By The Way) but after I burn califonication (which does have marginal enjoyment) it is gone.

I am keeping the first two Hootie albums out of sentiment,as well as the first 3 CDs i ever purchased (Real McCoy, Bon Jovi:CrossRoads, and TLC: CrazySexyCool). I really did like Marcy Playground's first cd, so I burned a copy just in case, but the second one, aside from Saturday didn't capture my attention as much. The Counting Crows have never really been one of my favorite groups outside of Mr. Jones & Long December. The 2 RHCP CDs I have are Californication and One Hot Minute though...so they shouldn't be missed...

I will have to see the list.

After reading the list, I just have to say that the people who wrote the list offered no legitimate reasons to sell over half of those records outside of "you know you're embarrassed by it." Yes, stranger, I'm so glad you know exactly how embarrassed I am at thinking that White Blood Cells is awesome. Shame on me.

Actually, shame on you, writers, for writing reviews like the ones that I wrote in the 8th grade. That list makes me proud to own the CDs that were on the list.

what a load of bullshit. personally, i'm in no hurry to get rid of anything. if i bought a cd, it was for a reason. it's obvious that whoever wrote that is a big nsync fan, as it seems to be the only thing he didn't talk smack about.

apparently, whoever made that list just thinks that no relatively popular album can also be good... it looks as though they just went down a list of the most popular artists of all time, wrote down the names of the albums that are generally accepted as their best, and decided to make that their list of stuff that we should get rid of. i guess i had better get rid of all those albums and just listen to music that absolutely no one else likes (god forbid someone sells more than a dozen copies of an album)... anybody know of a band that is so terrible that no one else could possibly like?

Right on- I still listen to "This Love" & am proud to be a veteran of 3 Pantera shows. Maybe someday they'll tour with Ben Folds & you and I can go to the show together.

if i bought a cd, it was for a reason.
FOr that reason, I have yet to rid myself of any cd I've ever bought, with the following exceptions:

1. Bush: Razorblade Suitcase
2. Gin Blossoms: New Miserable Experience
3. Gin Blossoms: Congratulations... I'm Sorry
4. Silverchair: Frogstomp
5. Seven Mary Three: American Standard

I needed money, and these cds had definitely lost all appeal. I had bought them all for a reason, but that reason was lost.

One of those was actually on that list, too. I'm almost inclined to buy it again for that reason, but I hate the Gin Blossoms.

Well, well, well...who shat in these guys' Cheerios? No one is safe from the furious wrath of the indie uber-hipsters at JAGUARO.COM. Lookout, anyone who's ever done anything that a significant amount of people like, THEY'RE COMING FOR YOU!

Seriously, any list that has 'Combat Rock' as the NUMBER ONE album you need to get rid of is way irrelevant.

Actually, getting rid of albums is irrelevant.

I still have:

2 MC Hammer albums
a Hootie album
2 Spice Girls albums
a Macarena extended play single
2 Bush albums
an Offspring album
a Vanilla Ice album
a NKOTB album

...and those are just off the top of my head. I don't get rid of music. Period.

Well, since others have admitted the CD's that they still own that could cause embarassment or rejection from peers, I feel inspired to do the same. I still own:

-2 Ace of Base albums (The Sign...the first CD I ever purchased, I think...and The Bridge)
-1 TLC album (CrazySexyCool)
-1 Hootie and the Blowfish album (Don't even act like you don't know the one)
-Various 80's Hits Compilation CDs
-1 Janet Jackson album (Rhythm Nation: 1814)

I am sure that there are others. I will go through the old CD case tomorrow and let you all know. How it feels good to release this shame after so many years.
And, I don't get rid of much music either. So, I am in the same boat as some of you there.

i can honestly say that i don't own any cds that i regret. the only one that i slightly resented was a rod stewart greatest hits, which i eventually learned to love. piss on anybody that talks down on rod the mod.

By the way, who is Captain Beefheart?
Captain Beefheart, real name Don Van Vliet, was a friend of frank Zappa who made some really good albums in the 60's and 70's. His music is very avant-garde. I myself am a huge fan of Capatin Beefheart. I even managed to convert Damon to the Captain.

I have some really horrible albums in my collection, albums which I only bought for one song. Dreadful. Prime Example: Feeling Strangely Fine by Semisonic; purchased only for "Closing Time". Love the song, Hate the Album.

Since I'm a big techno-geek, I keep all of my music on my MP3 player. Most of it is stuff that I would consider "good." But there's a lot of stuff on there that I know is bad music and you would laugh at me if you knew that I had. I don't even like some of the songs that I have on there that much... but I keep them around. Why? For the memories. Most of those songs take me back to a time and place in my life, and it's always fun to revisit those while I'm driving around in my car. That's why I keep my crappy song collection.

That would rule in so many ways biggrin.gif

I'm not sure if I should be bragging about this, but I think I saw Pantera about 6 times in the 90s. They came to Nashville quite often. Plus, I saw them at Ozzfest in Columbus, OH the year the riot broke out when Ozzy was a no-show.

Yeah, for now the world has to settle for seeing Phil Anselmo play with Down on the Ozzfest. That is, for those towns cool enough to GET Ozzfest this year.

I know this for a fact, as I have seen his collection. Although I wouldn't call it "crappy", I will say that I can pick some songs off of the playlist that make me laugh and bring back memories of my own. And, that is always nice.

I would say that this fact is the reason that I still own some of the worse albums in my CD collection. Still, like damon, I don't regret buying them. I bought them for a reason, whether it be because Ace of Base was our favorite group (Jenny and myself) in 6th grade or because my cousin Heather danced to Rhythm Nation, so I thought it was cool. rolleyes.gif

Ah so much has happened in three days. Now I'm reconsidering my sell pile...I do have an odd thing for selling CDs, like I want to keep my collection complete but I still, despite 6 years of music loving, feel like an infant in my tastes and want to expand, but that requires money which means selling the CDs that I don't listen to anymore...ah it's a neverending cycle.

I'm also the odd one in music taste too. I really love Semisonic. Great Divide is great, Feeling Strangely Fine did change my life in a way (sigh....melodrama) and Chemistry is also great (although I haven't listened to it much). I also really love Fastball. "The Harsh Light Of Day" is one of my top 15 favorite albums ever. No shame. And I still think that Hootie's "Fairweather Johnson" is good. Yes, I haven't listened to it in 4 years but the songs were great. The Gin Blossoms hold a special place in my heart for being the first band that I ever went crazy over (I own 2 singles, an EP, and New Miserable Experience on tape and CD).

But I did sell my Paula Abdul "Head Over Heels." "Crazycool" was only a good song for so long...
