TOPIC: A Really Cool Song The Features Should Cover
Posted  Monday, March 31, 2003 at 10:53 PM
Post 1 of 38
Just Kidding.

Actually, I kinda wanna open my musical horizons and start listening to new bands. I think it would be extremley time consuming to weed through all yalls top 5s. So maybe if yall have any bands are artists that you could recommend that I check out that would be cool. Maybe even a good song of thiers to download or something too.. and if this topic has already been done in any way I apologize.

hmm. the possibilties are infinite to this request. maybe you could narrow it down for us a little bit. what type of music are you looking to explore? what musicians do you like? would you like to know the names of some artists that are similar or different from them? etc. etc.
you know, just give us something to run with... smile.gif

I'm pretty much open to anything. I usually listen to rock. Pretty much: Ryan Adams, Strokes, White Stripes, Hives, Ben Harper, Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Oasis, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple to name some. But it doesn't have to be close to what I am listening to now, I'm kinda in the mood for change anyway.

I just wanted to tell you, Rachel, that this is the best introduction (or non-introduction?) of a topic I've seen. Very funny.

I just got the newest Jimmy Eat world cd and really like it alot... a whole lot more than I expected. By the way, I gotta give you props for the thread topic... I too have been wondering what everyone else on here recommends, I guess I've just been too lazy to post the question myself.

by the way ray davies, if you had to pick the most popular (or personal favorite) out of those songs you listed, what would the top 5 be?

Rachel - buy the new OutKast album when it comes out next month.

Or, if you want something that sounds more like the Features, buy something by either Elvis Costello and the Attractions, the Talking Heads, or the Kinks.

But if you don't own it already, go immediately and buy the White Album by the Beatles.

Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I'm going to add the bands that I like that not many people remember or care about. Remember, I'm pretty lame in terms of musical taste...

Apples in stereo "Go" and "Look Away" as well as everything off of "Tone Soul Evolution" is worth your time.
The Dandy Warhols "Cool As Kim Deal" "Solid" "Minnesoter" "Lou Weed"
Starlight Mints "Submarine #3" "Matador"
The La's "I Can't Sleep" "Way Out" "Liberty Ship" "Doledrum"

But she's not here anymore. Therefore, we can logically conclude that girls who like Pere Ubu die horrible, painful deaths. Be very cautious with their music, rachel.

I hardly think that I am qualitfied to advise you on musical choices, but knowing that you enjoy Ryan Adams I would recommend that you check out other artists that are on Bloodshot. I got these cds at Hastings a year called Down from the Promised Land: 5 Years of Bloodshot Records. They have a great bunch of artists on them. You should check out Whiskeytown if you haven't already, and maybe Caitlin Cary, and the Old 97's. I think they are all really great.

Have a good time exploring, Rachel biggrin.gif

ray davies included "non-alignment pact" on a mixtape he was kind enough to make for my birthday. i have to say that it's one of my favorite songs on the tape. but that's about the extent of my pere ubu knowledge. so i can't do much to further prove your theory wrong smee.

a horrible and painful death you say, tf? hmmm, maybe i should reconsider downloading those pere ubu albums after all...

Pere Ubu intrigues me. I liked the song on my mix tape also and I aslo enjoyed the article about them in Magnet this month. And I had a dream that I was at some store and I was allowed to get 2 free cds and one of the ones i got was pere ubu. I guess you know you are broke and starved for new music when you dream about free cds.

mindylieu is alive and well, thank you. I just got back from a class with her where we are in the same group together. So, no painful or horrible death has met her. And, she still likes Pere Ubu, I am pretty sure.

Hi, Rachel, I'm Buckley, and I'm going to be your local hipster/quasi-indie rocker to-nite, and suggest you buy both "kid a" and "amnesiac." laugh.gif

Good stuff has been mentioned already so I'll second ELT's suggestion of J.D.'s "Substance" and any album by The Smiths ("Louder than Bombs" is good cos it's got lots of stuff on there from various albums). Those were the only two bands I've ever immediately gotten into upon hearing their first song, so I highly recommend them.

The Cocteau Twins "Heaven or Las Vegas" or "Blue Bell Knoll" ('Carolyn's Fingers' is a good song to download to get a taste for what they sound like).

If you want a really good brit girl band with really trippy guitars and falsetto vocals you should DEFINITELY check out Lush. "Gala," "Spooky," and "Split" are their best albums.

I was really into this stuff when I was 14, and I'm still into it now. I think you'd enjoy this stuff. Enjoy smile.gif
Why would you do that?

"You Can Have It All" is not a Yo La Tengo song. It's by Harry Wayne Casey, I believe the same H.W.C. of KC and the Sunshine Band Fame. Sorry, I fealt like being a dick. tongue.gif

Update:
This was a few months ago and I'm still working on downloading and listening to them all.

So far: My favorite has been Apples in Stereo. I am definatley obsessed with "Go" & I wish I had liked them when they were in town a while ago.
I really loved The Kinks as well and even bought some cds recently.
Whiskeytown I really enjoy, but I guess that was sort of a given with my Ryan Adams passion and all.
I liked the Love song suggested but I haven't checked out anymore of thier stuff.
I wasn't too crazy about Roxy Music & Joy Division. (Sorry)

There are a lot more that I didn't really have a chance to form an opinion about and many more I need to try. Thanks to all who gave suggestions.

joy division was not at all what i was expecting the first time I picked them up. i'd only heard good things, not actually heard the music... so i was unprepared... but after a few listens i got used to it and i can honestly say that it's one of the more interesting things i've heard...

I mean, I didn't hear it once and was like "this is weird" and that was it. I'm one of those people that rarely likes things from the get-go (I hated "Go" when I first heard it now its my favorite) so I keep trying it pretty often to see if I like it. I think I really just can't get into the singer's voice. Same reason I'm not too big a fan of Interpol.

Yay, looks like I did some good. cool.gif I guess I could make some more suggestions. I would definitely download "Glowworm" and "Avril en Mai" by the Apples, as well as "Ruby" and "Alright/Not Quite." While I haven't checked out much Roxy Music yet (all downloaded, not burned yet), I haven't been a huge fan of the Joy Division stuff I've heard. On a side note, have you downloaded any Television (specifically, "Marquee Moon")?

that's what most people say when i play them joy division.....i know for a fact that it took richarddawson years to finally realize their amazing power.....i put the 12" version of "she's lost control" on a tape for him all the way back in 7th grade.....but he finally came around.....

i must admit that joy division is an acquired taste but i would suggest you dip into it every once in a while at first, it becomes one of the most amazing musical experiences that you will ever have......

Joy Division is great. I could go on and on about it, but instead will make this pattern for Rachel...

Liking the Strokes can lead to liking the Velvet Underground, which can lead to liking Joy Division. The voices become more monotonous gradually, instead of freaking you out at first. With liking Joy Division, you would likely begin to enjoy Interpol a little more as well. This is at least how I went about the situation, though it happened over about a year and half's time. You should throw the Pixies in that mix somewhere, as well.

Yes, that movie played a large role in my appreciation for Joy Division. It inspired me to learn more about the rest of their music, rather than listen to Closer all the fucking time. 24 Party People kicks ass Rachel. You should definitely rent it.
