TOPIC: Albums and Seasons

As I was listening to The Best of Blur in the shower, I was thinking of how each song reminded me of a season in my life, as I have often thought before. The Trainspotting soundtrack reminds me of fall, and my first big romance....The Great Escape reminds me of a car trip with my brother when I was really young. I realize this is incredibly sentimental, but...what the hell? Richarddawson's thread about the cd's he recently bought made me yearn for more discussion of albums.
Why would you do that?

I cannot listen to any song without it bringing back a memory of some sort. There are even certain albums that I can't listen to unless it is 'that time of year' ("The Man Who" being a prime example). Nice topic....

Winter
Travis "The Man Who"
Shins "Oh, Inverted World!"
Oasis "The Masterplan"
Interpol "Turn On The Bright Lights"

Spring
All Weezer Albums
Talking Heads "Fear Of Music"

Summer
The La's "The La's"
Oasis "Be Here Now"
The Hives "Veni Vidi Vicious"

Fall
The Strokes "Is This It?"
White Stripes "De Stijl"
Beck "Midnite Vultures"

My seasonal tastes fluctuate every year but there are those few bands that do stand out every single year!

Fall is a season for The Cure for me. Alll of thier albums go well with the attitude and dark nature of how the weather shifts during the fall. REM is also present quite a bit during these months. Mostly New Adventures and Murmur. Sonic Youth with Sister and Evol. Some appearances can be made by Dinosaur Jr and Shellac. U2 can also help aid the fall.

The dead winter is an odd season for my music. Mostly Smashing Pumpkins and The Violent Femmes. The Frogs are also quite good during the cold months. You can keep warm with Tool and some Nirvana. I recomend Bleach during the cold weather. Winter is also good for anything punk rock. winter aggression must be let out and what better way to do it?

Spring and Summer is filled with lots of Flaming Lips, Pearl Jam, Fluid Ounces and of course Pink Floyd. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin make frequent visits along with a heavy amount of Cheap Trick. Sonic Youth can pop up with some NYC Ghosts and Flowers. Nirvana's In Utero is perfect for the warm weather.

Hey, great topic. I used to fight it but I've come to terms with my sentimentality. After a lot of thought, here goes

Fall: (J.C. beat me to it) Being There, Wilco. This is THE QUINTESSENTIAL autumn album. My best memories have always been in the fall and this album is the perfect soundtrack. Others: Neil Young, any combo of Gold Rush, Harvest, Harvest Moon, Silver/Gold. Elliot Smith, E/O and XO. Belle & Sebastian, The Replacements

December/Christmas: any Phil Spector; Stereolab, dots and loops

Winter: Combo Jazz in general, esp Monk, early 50's Duke Ellington, Mid-period Coltrane, etc.

March: Simian, Chemistry is what we are; Dylan, Hwy 61

Spring: Any Flaming Lips

Summer: Pet Sounds; Olivia Tremor Control; The White Album; Wilco, Summerteeth

Fall: Kid A- Radiohead
Interesting... I've always seen Kid A as more of an early summer piece... when it's just starting to get hot and you're not used to the heat yet, and uncomfortable... basically Kid A always felt uncomfortable. It was almost the antithesis to OK Computer for me in the fact that OK Computer put me at ease with my anxieties... but I digress... I just found it interesting that you picked fall. any reason in particular?

It was released in the fall, if I remember correctly. I associate albums with seasons much more often because of the season of the year that it was the soundtrack for my life than because of any sonic qualities. There are exceptions, though.

Very good question. This is a concept I've just recently started thinking about. Mostly it was inspired by the many projects of Ben Gibbard. The little I've come up with...

Summer: Everclear, Phantom Planet, Pearl Jam, Radiohead--The Bends and early B-Sides
Fall: Danzig/Misfits, Death Cab for Cutie, Led Zepellin, Radiohead-- Kid Amnesiac
Winter: All-Time Quarterback, Elliott Smith, Coldplay (I'll always have a vivid memory of walking home from work in the snow listening to AROBTTH a few months ago), Travis
Spring: Ben Folds Five, Postal Service
Daigle is all we need to make the night complete

So true, Carl. That album was my soundtrack for those snowstorms. It will always remind me of that time.
