i was at tower yesterday, shopping around for new things, and am wondering what is recommended as anything excellent, amazing, thought provoking, or just plain good....

my pick is The Postal Service whom i was lately introduced to, and i highly recommend it. the lyrics involve alot about love, which is always nice and can be related to life

I would recommend Starlight Mints "Built on Squres," mainly because I'm lame like that. It's pretty darn amazing and pretty darn entertaining. Non-sensical lyrics, Kinks-esque riffs, and whimsical trumpet/harmonica combos always make me happy.

The Postal Service CD did not come out of my CD player for two months...if it did, it was only to carry it inside to listen to as I worked! I noticed your signature before I read your post, and thought I knew it. Good pic!
The Starlight Mints are also among my favorites. Does anyone else like the Salteens, or the Lucksmiths? They are fun bands like that kind of music. Just a suggestion!

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Postal Service absolutely rules. As does anything else Ben Gibbard has done.

The new Damone is really good, too.

I know it's way overrated, but I've been listening to White Stripes Elephant a lot.

If we're talking about recent releases, I'll go with Think Tank by Blur. Nothing short of inspiring for me. Such a wide variety of emotion and attitudes, and such a departure for this band. Blur are my Beatles.

If you want Jamie Carroll's top 10 of all time, it goes something like this:

10. the Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
9. the Kinks - Arthur
8. REM - Automatic for the People
7. Kula Shaker - Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts
6. U2 - Zooropa
5. Wilco - Summerteeth
4. Blur - Parklife
3. Self - Breakfast With Girls
2. Blur - The Great Escape
1. the Beatles - white album

Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I'm gonna say Figure 8 by Elliott Smith and Stay What You Are by Saves The Day... of course, I love Postal Service, but they've been mentioned. grade a stuff, there.

One of the two

Fluid Ounces - In the New Old Fashioned Way

~or~

Mike Watt - Contemplating the Engine Room

I always recommend these two. They are the absolute best.

My last really good purchase was a set of Elliott Smith bootlegs at CD Warehouse on 21st Ave. in Nashville for $13. One of them is a "full band" performance from 2000 and is alright and the other is a solo performance from 1998 and is amazing. I also got the White Stripes Peel Sessions and a live performance from last year for the same price the week before that.

Which I think might have really been Elliott + Quasi, but I may be off on my timing.

at first glance, i thought this topic was called "albums worth nothing." i have several cds worth nothing, because they're too scratched up to sell & i don't listen to them anymore.

for all you postal service fans: there's a new cd with ben gibbard and andrew somethingorother (from american analog set). each do about 3 or 4 songs. i haven't heard it -- i saw it at grimey's the other day.

carl, i did also buy the white stripes elephant album, which is in my car as well. i made a big decision yesterday. i never have been able to say "this is my favorite cd" in my life, because music has so many different angles to it that it's hard to say one cd is your favorite due to the various styles and my ever-changing moods, but i have decided that coldplay's rush of blood to the head cd is my all time favorite cd, atleast for right now. can't get enough of it. they have even brought competition to my love for ben folds five and ben folds independent collection

I had the same thought...and still do everytime I see this thread.

I have many cds worth nothing as well, which I hope to sell for at least something before the summer's through.

i, unfortunately, being the topic starter and all, caught my breath the first time i went back into the post thinking "did i put worth nothing...that's not what i meant!" but then i realized that it said "n o t i n g"....this is a tricky word. my apologies, all of you.

hmmmm
This "hmmmm" was brought to you by sideponytails using my computer. It was not me humming a tune, nor was it me being pensive, nor was it me getting a prostate exam. It was a big fat Turd posting something under my name, then panicking and replacing it with a clever "hmmmm". Knowing me name, she could have at least posted something like,

"Uuuuuuuhhhhhh, I like Ben Folds (Five) albums."

This is not the first time that said incident has occured. I was curious about your "hmmm" and how irrelevant it was. Good shot SPT.

there are a few more note worthy items i would like to mention.
firstly - the e. costello re-releases. they all come with bonus material. and not crappy extras, but like 15 extra songs each. some demos, some b-sides, some live tracks. if you are a fan it is surely a treat.

also the new zep dvd is going to be the absolute shizznit.

super furry animals new cd out in july - i just know it will be great

Great choice, good value. I have three differerent versions of MAIT though. I hope this is the last round of re-releases for awhile because it is getting expensive.

And Uglyapeman, kudos to you for expressing your love of Mr. Costello. You will always have a friend in me. smile.gif
