I just walked by the tv long enough to see that Third Eye Blind was playing The Kinks on American Dreams. Thought it might be relevant since I've heard several of you talk about them (The Kinks) before.
You're so fucking money you don't even know it

I am watching "American Dreams" as I type.

I love this show. I think it's really cool how they get current groups to play old bands even though sometimes they make really bad choices. It makes for good entertainment.

I've never seen the show, but I've seen the previews...and that was enough for me. It looks pretty awful to me. I just don't understand how you could get a whole season, let alone several, from such a plot line.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

the thing that makes it so interesting isn't the part about the girl that dances on American Bandstand, but the racial and religious aspects of the 1960's (I think?) as well as feminist topics.. It's about a white Catholic family that thus far has had to deal with these things .

Not to mention it's, all cleverly worked into a plot that can be enjoyable to someone of even the shallowest understanding of these greater topics by lacing each thing with the common theme of innocence, young love, and popular culture.

Once again.. this show is completely respectable. If for no other reason, then just because of it's attempt, as vain as it might be, to raise awareness on social issues.

I would encourage you to watch it before you make any decisions about it's plot line.

I liked "Blue" a lot. it had some good songs on it... but i'm not real big into Third Eye Blind... they seem pretty derivative most of the time.

I really, really liked them from 8-10 grade, but I think my taste has changed just enough to not tolerate it anymore. I still think that some of their songs are good songs and they will always take me back to that time in my life (of course why would I want to go back there?) so I can't completely knock them. They are derivitive, but I think they're better than most all of the 1997 bands that came out.

But they are probably irrelevent and definitely, definitely don't deserve to represent the Kinks visually or musically on television.

I agree, but hey, at least they know who the kinks are...

and i enjoyed spike's poetry actually. it captured the essence of the clumsy fool in love. i think.

Keith and I saw this thread coming from a mile away when we saw the comercial friday evening. We agreed there was no way this was going to happen without extreme criticism on this messageboard.

I have no opinion on any of this. Even if I did, I'd have nothing to back it up.

Really, Third Eye Blind playing the kinks isn't any worse than Usher playing Marvin Gaye or any of the other casting choices they've made. I think it is an interesting idea and the episodes that I have had on in the background while I waited for Alias to come on have seemed competent and not as brainless as other shows.

I've watched American Dreams once or twice. I don't think that it is a bad show or anything. I thought that the guy with glasses who works at the record store was kinda cute. I think that's why I started watching it.
