TOPIC: An Idea...
Posted  Monday, June 16, 2003 at 10:11 PM
Post 1 of 50
I have an idea. Maybe it's a good idea, maybe it's not - ya'll can tell me. So you know I'm always all about hearing new and different kinds of music, but money doesn't grow on trees, and in 2003 I don't do the file-sharing any more. PLUS, I totally respect the mix tape as an art form in and of itself. ALSO, a lot of us here have fairly similar taste in music, though there is still significant variety...

GET TO THE POINT, JAMIE CARROLL!

Okay, what do ya'll think about doing a mix tape exchange of some kind? I don't know exactly how it would work; we would have to flesh out the details if we were going to try it. But I was thinking like a "secret santa"-type thing, except not secret. Everyone who wanted to be involved could make a mix tape (or CD) for one other person who's involved. That way everyone gets a tape of new music to listen to. It wouldn't cost much - about $2 for the tape and a dollar and change to mail it.

Is this idea stupid? What do ya'll think?

I like it, but how would we go about pulling names for the tape-exchange?

maybe we could get brianw to randomly assign us to people... ph34r.gif

Or maybe one of us who's trustworthy could draw the names for everyone. I don't know.

Okay, so several of us are interested. Let's get down to the details - how do we make this work? Each person that's involved could "draw" one other person's name and make a tape (or CD) for that person, and mail it to them.

I'm willing to do the following:

Each person who wants to be involved will e-mail me or PM me with their name and address and whether they want tape or CD. When I get everyone's info, I will do a drawing (in the presence of another MB member) and then e-mail or PM everyone with who they need to send a tape or CD to. Then it's just the honor system, I guess.

Does this sound doable? Discuss.

Also, to those of you who feel you're not qualified to make a tape - nonsense! There are no prerequisites for being an artist.

It more of.. what I am listening to now I've pretty much learned from on here. The point of the tape exchange is to expose people to more things, but I doubt I know of any artist that I would put on a tape the the recipiant wouldnt have heard of.

Don't let that stop you if you want to do it. I haven't listened to a lot of the music that you listen to. Plus, it's not all about putting un-heard-of songs on the tape, it's also about the art of putting songs together in an interesting way.

yeah, rachel... you could do many different themes... boyfriends (that's a favorite of mine), seasons, memoirs, etc... it doesn't have to be "cool," it just has to exemplify something about you. wink.gif

are we going ahead and emailing/pm-ing JC, or are we still discussing the logistics?

Okay, then, let's do this. Everyone who wants to be part of this mix tape exchange just e-mail me or PM me in the next week. Somebody tell Sadie and Ray about this, 'cos I want them. In this e-mail or PM please give your name and mailing address, as well as whether you want a tape or a CD and whether or not you can make either a tape or a CD. In about a week, I will e-mail or PM everyone with the name and address of the person for whom they are making a mix, and who will be making a mix for them.

Questions? Fire away. Otherwise, send me an e-mail or a Private Message.

Okay, so a lot of people are involved in this so far. I think it's going to be really cool, or at least really interesting.

IF YOU STILL WANT TO BE INVOLVED - PM me or E-MAIL me. But don't just say that you want to be involved. Send me your mailing address and whether you want a tape or a CD and whether you can make a tape or a CD. I'm probably going to do the drawing tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

Here's a question for ya'll: after we do this drawing, do you think we should post who's making for whom here on the MB or just send out PMs and keep it "private"? It's up to ya'll; discuss.

I personally would like to be able to put a (message board screen) name to the mix that I receive... that's how I feel about it. Plus, it could spawn a whole new thread of "Mix Artist Props" or something.

although the mailing addresses should probably be kept 'private'.

Yes, everyone will know who is making a mix for them. You will get a PM that says something to the effect of:

You are making a mix CD for:
John Doe (jamiecarroll)
123 Main Street
Anywhere, NY 12345

You will be recieving a mix CD from:
Billy Mack (roadie)

Oh, absolutely the mailing addresses and "real names" would be kept private, no matter what. Sorry for not mentioning that. If I put the "lineup" on the MB, it would be just so that people could know who was making a mix for whom. The mailing addresses will be PM'd out only to the person who is making the mix.
