TOPIC: are you a musician?
Posted  Monday, June 10, 2002 at 9:15 AM
Post 1 of 40
I'm sittin around thinking about the message board, because as previously mentioned i am addicted. and i was talking to some friends about my new collection of songs titled 'charging the bomb to blow up your house'.
i was wondering if anyone else here who is a musician has anything recorded and would like to share. I'm thinking along the lines of a bootleg tree. I'm just interested in hearing other musician's stuff.
thank you for being a friend.

My summer project is to learn how to write real songs. In the past I have only written silly songs. You can hear them at www.mp3.com/chrisfreeman.

ween writes 'silly' songs and they have plenty of great ones. everyone always takes music and songwriting so damn seriously. that's why i like kevin ayers. most people that listen to things like gang of four don't even realize there's humor there. the beatles were silly as hell.

good call. i would love to be able to write silly songs, but its just not my forte. like the flaming lips- they're stuff makes no sense but i love it. the dead milkmen are one of my favorite bands. etc. etc.

so go ahead with your silly song writing self.
thank you for being a friend.

I'm sure I'll find plenty of opposition to this post, but 95% of the time, I would much rather hear The Features do The Features, since their own songs are generally better than whatever they are covering. Grapevine is the main exception since they made it their own, but if I had a choice between Psycho Killer and say... Action, I'm gonna choose Action every time. Same goes for most of the other covers.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Another exception is the now long gone 'Sweet Child O' Mine' cover that was so genius. It's gone now too, was a novelty cover, and still isn't quite as good as their new originals. I do, however, enjoy some 'Jet'

drummers aren't musicians, though some try really hard to be with their pretentious white jazz crap. that's why drummer ends with -er, rather than -ist. guitarist, bassist, pianist, flautist, percussionist(?)....drummer.

I like the word pianist. They're pretty cool, though. I was once going to learn to play the piano, but my mom gave out piano to my uncle.

There was a time in my life when I didn't care for the piano. Then I saw Seth Timbs with Fluid Ounces. Oh how my life has changed!

Some drummers are musicians. Some are not. Usually if they play other instruments, they are musicians. If they don't, they are just drummers. However some drummers who also play other instruments still don't get it and are just drummers. If a drummer plays the drums musically and his drum parts are as musical as the other instruments' parts (Rollum Haas, Stan Lynch, Darren Jessee) then he's a musician. If he just keeps the time and does some fills, he's a drummer (Steven Adler, Zach Lind). There are pros and cons to both ways and different music calls for different things. You take a guy like Dave Grohl, he doesn't play drums very musically, but he's obviously a multi-instrumentalist and a good all around musician. I like him as a drummer for his hard hitting style but it's not as organic as some other drummers. Anyways, that's my explanation of drummers and musicians.

OK drummers play the drums, and drums are a musical instrument, so drummers are musicians. Period.

I think that drummers are musicians, too. So, JC and Mindy, I am in with you all.
To address sinasugarsick, yes, drummers, in my limited experience, aren't very good lovers at all. Then again, I have only dated a couple.

never dated a drummer. dated a few bassist/ guitarists.

what do you think about this theory? the way that a guy plays the guitar is reflected in the way he is in bed. like if a guy fucking rocks out on that gishnar they are good, but if they are all mellow and slow, then maybe they wouldn't be very good in bed. ive never tested this theory, but my friend sandi swears its true.
i don't mean musical style, just the manner in which they play.

Hmmm. Let me ask my friends who date guitarists. I have never personally dated one, much less slept with one, so I wouldn't know. I will get back to you on that, though.

i disagree.  i was raised by a drumming dad (my mom seems to think he's a good lover, but i don't want to think about that anymore)... and i'm in love with a drummer too. so i may have drummer bias, but i wouldn't trade 'em for anything.  esp. keyboadists, they tend to be a bit neurotic (parrish excluded).

Well since we have talked about drummers, keyboardists, guitarists and bassists, what about singers? Any input on them? I have personally never dated a singer, although I was temporarily involved with one (temporary being the key word there). He was a good guy, just a little self-centered.

I've heard that some musicians who are supposedly all tough and badass on stage are really horrible in bed. i remember reading an article in Spin a long time ago about groupies rating rock stars in bed, and the overall hands down winner in the opinion of these girls was Tony, the bassist from No Doubt. No wonder why gwen Stefani was so heartbroken when he dumped her. They also rated the worst lover as Trent Reznor.
Well, it seems that this post has gone on for a little too long so I'll just stop.

Welcome to the board, Bazooka Joe. I am a bass player, and yes, I am a good lover. I also play the guitar, and I play it damn good, too. I rock out, I'm not mellow and slow. That makes me an even better lover. By the way, who was the other person that joined? I was 164 and someone was 165 and Bazooka Joe is 166.
So I'm Hooking up with David Dewese David Dewese, double D Hooking up with DD DD, don't make me say please again oh no again oh no

So what if you don't play any instruments? Does that automatically make you a bad lover? I don't play any instruments, but I did sing for a while. So, maybe my voice could be a substitution. As far as my loving abilities ago, I haven't had many complaints. But, then again, who would come up to you and say, 'You sucked in bed. Just thought I would let you know'?
Well maybe some people would now that I think about it...

I can play women like  a musical instrument.  Does that count for anything?

OK, OK. I admit it. I've never even seen a woman naked before. Just leave me alone.
