TOPIC: Bands You Want to See before you Die
Posted  Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at 8:48 PM
Post 1 of 65
I just thought of this one, and I thought it was worthy of making a topic on. I thought I'd be the first to branch out and make a separate forum from the other top 5 forum (who I still give all credit to stalker for..)

mine are in no particular order:

-Primal Scream (in England)
-Blur (in England)
-Radiohead (in England)
-DJ Shadow
-Neutral Milk Hotel (i know they really aren't around, but I grand-fathered them in for all the times long ago when I thought I was about to see them, and then realized I was looking at a tour date page 2 years old)
Why would you do that?

This closely resembles a previous thread of concerts we'd want to attend. The "before you die" thing makes it sound, unlike the last time, like it cannot include a band that does not exist. For me, most of the bands I haven't seen, but want to see, are bands that have broken up and have dead former members, thus cancelling the chance to see them again (i.e. The Beatles, The Minutemen, Led Zep)

It also makes me realize how blase I feel these days about music, buying CDs, and attending concerts.

All 5 of the bands I mention are ones that I'll want to see AGAIN

FLUID OUNCES
REM
Flaming Lips
Sonic Youth

oh wait...DOS is a band that I haven't seen that I want to see before I die. There we go.

YaDaDaDa = back at #5.

My list includes only two actual bands, but you know....

Paul McCartney
David Bowie
Radiohead
Fiona Apple
The Strokes...again

My list would be much much different if I could include bands that no longer exist. I feel like I might actually have the chance of seeing these.

The Shins
The White Stripes
The Hives
The Strokes
Oasis (again and in England)

I would also love to see The La's and Talking Heads but seeing as how Lee Mavers has gone loopy and Talking Heads will never do a reunion tour, those are my 5.

So this is my list from the last time we talked about this, with four changes. First, Elvis Costello came off the list, because I saw him at the Ryman. Second, Sheryl Crow came off because her music has sunk to the point of tainting whatever good work she did earlier in her career. Also, I added XTC and Luke Haines/the Auteurs.

Bob Dylan (will be off the list after April 29)
David Byrne
Pulp
the Beastie Boys
Michael Jackson
Gene
Guns'n'Roses (the REAL GnR reunited)
Beck
XTC
the Smiths (reunion)
Pearl Jam (go on and laugh; I owe it to my inner15yrold)
Suede
the Counting Crows
Johnny Cash
Oasis
Herbie Hancock
Prince
Elliott Smith
Boston
Willie Nelson
Parlaiment
Luke Haines/the Auteurs

(Edited by jamiecarroll at 5:59 am on Apr. 17, 2003)
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

Hmmmmm...

Radiohead-- I saw them play at the Tibetan Freedom concert in DC, but the venue was huge and they only played like 20 minutes

U2-- I don't own many of their albums, but I've been told they put on a hell of a live show. Seeing their exhibit at the RnRHoF further supported this.

Pavement-- I seriously think this will happen in the next few years. I only saw them back in 95 before I was really familiar with them. I be happy to see Malkmus right now if the bastard would come back to Nashville.

Deftones-- I saw them open for Godsmack (how embarrassing) in the daylight for like 30 minutes. I also saw them way back in 96 (?) opening for 311 in support of Adrenaline. I want to see them headline, though.

Faith No More-- Once again, a reunion I can definitely see happening one day.

Not that anyone really cares, but I forgot to mention The Dandy Warhols in my list, which is retarded since they are one of my top 3 favorite bands of all time. When they tour for their new album ("Welcome to the Monkey House" due July 22) I will see them, even if it means driving on the interstate. It will be a Taylor-Taylor Pilgrimage-Pilgrimage.

All good rock bands would go straight to Hell. Since the sound system there isn't very good, I have no desire to see any of them play there.

I've already seen all five of the bands that I would want to hear live so I'm guess I'm ready to die.

I interpreted this question to mean what bands have I not seen that I want to see...

The Replacements
The Olivia Tremor Control (I would be front row muthafuckin center)
The Velvet Underground
Stereolab
AC/DC (fuckin A)

Yes it is, Lauren. Come on, get with it.

And no, damon, I have never seen Oasis. Predictably, I'd really love it if I could go back in time and see them with the old lineup, but I would settle for seeing them now. I thought I was going to get my chance when they played at the Tabernacle, but that got screwed up.

Pink Floyd (with Roger Waters)
ELO (with Jeff Lynne) or a Jeff Lynne solo show (man's a genius)
Fleetwood Mac
The White Stripes
And, uh, I can't think of a 5th

I'm not too big on the "real" concerts. I enjoy seeing good bands up close and personal in clubs. The only real concerts I've been too were Fiona Apple (awesome), Creed (too loud), and Parliament with George Clinton. And yes, it was groovalicious.

This is an old article that was linked on my messageboard when it happened in mid-December. I believe her death was greatly overshadowed by Joe Strummer's death a week or two after that. I think we were all still reeling from George Harrison's death as well.

Yeah, so far it has been easy to see bands for me (other then because of age requirements) so I didn't really think that it might not always be that easy. What happened all three times? That sucks. I was out of town when Spice Girls came in 5th grade and I remember being pretty bummed. rolleyes.gif

Is it possible that you usually only hear about bands from the radio and TV? If that's the case, then you always have a better shot of seeing the bands you want, because bands that tour are the bands they'll be playing on MTV.

Of course, having lived in Tennessee (a state which frequently gets the shaft on quality tours) for 80% of my life I'm amazed to hear such a statement from a fellow resisdent. I've had to go pretty far to see some of my favorite bands.

Yeah, usually. I mean, obviously I wouldn't be here (the board) if I only listened to whats on the radio and on tv but that and through friends is where I first hear a majority of music. Its not always just because of MTV though. I first started listening to The Strokes because I heard them perform of SNL and went out and got the cd.

mary got hit by a truck backing out when she was riding her bike in london. it was pretty sad. I think a few of them are doing solo projects right now. I've gotten to see Stereolab twice. Once when they opened for Sonic Youth at the Tabernacle, and another time at the variety playhouse. both were really good. one of my favorite bands to see live.
Why would you do that?

I missed that show in lieu of seeing Fluid Ounces, but I have heard how great it was. I saw them the night before at Tennessee Theater, and it was awesome. They seemed to have produced a large body of work in a short amount of time. If nothing new has been released since her death, then it's doubtful that they'll come back. D'oh.

A new twist on the same topic, in light of this depressing turn, could be

Name the top 5 artists that you want to see before they die.
Think of the old, think of the haggard, think of the drug-addicted, and list the top 5 whose clocks are ticking.

Mine:
Paul McCartney
Jimmy Page/Robert Plant
Brian Wilson
Johnny Cash
Pink Floyd

He played Blue Sky Court a few months ago. Very quiet and laid back. He made frequent mention of recording his forthcoming (at the time) album in Leiper's Fork, but as far as I know, he doesn't live there anymore. I think the house where he stayed is featured on the album cover. Did this ever come out? I wasn't that compelled to follow up on it.

Man, I can't even remember...but it was probably the same one. I really was about to flip out b/c I think the page even mentioned a Chattanooga show (which is where I was living at the time). Now that I'm living in Athens, I'm trying to get a glimpse of Jeff Mangum who might happened to walk into Schoolkids or the other record stores 'round here. But if I do, I prolly wouldn't say anything to him, although I would LOVE to (I feel we have this strange connection, both being from Louisiana, and I have had this cool dream of him playing in this really dark and dingy house out in the country in La.) b/c I've heard he's pretty hostile to fans that talk to him.
Why would you do that?

i was fortunate to see neutral milk hotel twice; once in chattanooga (the PAs stopped working, so it was a mostly-acoustic unplugged-type show. jeff ended up singing without a mic most of the show. incredible!) second was during the kindercore festival thingy in athens at the 40 Watt. it still ranks up there as one of my favorite shows of all time. i have some great pictures from that show, too. i went to a "kindercore picnic" while i was down there & all the guys from of montreal, NMH, olivia tremor control, etc...were there, playing kickball, listening to the stone roses, and eating veggie burgers.

neuboy and i attended the one in 2000. it was a blast, as athens is an amazing town. i think we barely ate, as most of our money went to beer and pot. we were dissapointed by the crowd though. i think we thought it's be more of an uberhip swingin' drug taking set. instead it was mainly 18 yr olds whose main concern was having their picture taken with masters of the hemishpere. those nordic twerps from kings of convenience both deserved a smack in the mouth as they told us, "if you feel the need to talk at the bar pleas go outside." it's fuckin georgia ladies, get a drummer and and a bass player or get over it. i think the highlight was the late night dance party and possibly eight track gorilla's and summer hymn's sets.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

We can only hope that cloning technology is well-developed enough by then that we can make a 5-piece band of Pauls.
