i just wanted to talk about video games again. i decided to only include the "traditional" mario games, even though dr mario, mario kart, super mario rpg, and the original mario brothers arcade game all rule. i hope no super mario land/wario people are offended.
my vote goes to smb 3. yoshi's island is a close second.

I put Mario world, but I'm not sure if that's totally the best. It is very involved and has lots of tricks, that's why I voted for it. The original, of course, will always be fun, even when I am 80.

What's with this old-school crap? Mario 64 blows these games out of the water! It's an all-new level of adventure games that has yet to be surpassed (only equalled by Zelda 64 and DK 64).

I saw some of Sunshine and was very unimpressed.

i voted for super mario world. some of my fondest video game memories were spent playing that game. it was the first one with an overabundance of secrets. yoshi's island was incredible. i love the crazy surreal pastel look of that game. i ignored the n64 when it was out, but i'm going to get around to mario 64 soon.

Super Mario 64 has been called one of the greatest video games of all time. I thoroughly enjoyed it (as well as the two Zelda titles for the N64). Mario Sunshine was supposed to be a continuation of Mario 64, which is why the gameplay is so similar. While I had fun playing Sunshine, I wasn't as impressed with it as I was with Mario 64. Maybe it's just because Mario 64 was so revolutionary at the time.

i went for super mario brothers 3. back in middle school, i really wanted to play the flute. i was given an ulimatum for my 13th birthday present: flute lessons or smb3. i chose smb 3. just think, if i would've went with the former, i could've been a member of character.

if anyone has any old N64 games they want to get rid of, let me or ELT know.

I think I'm gonna vote for Super Mario World, but it's a tough call between that, the original, and Mario 64. I also think Sunshine is underrated.

Yoshi's Island was just way too easy. I rented it, worrying that 5 days wouldn't be enough time to have fun with the game. To my surprise, I was able to beat the whole thing in about 4 hours. That's not what a Mario game should be.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

You're right on, man. There was just so much to discover in SMW. It was just spot on. It was like retreating to another world.

I think that everyone (who was alive then) loves the original Mario brothers. It was probably the first video game you got really into, and everyone had it, since it came with the NES.

Mario 2 is very under-rated; it's so different from the rest.

Mario Sunshine is boring.

What's the word on the street about this new Zelda game? Is it good?

I assume you mean Super Mario Bros, not to be confused with Mario Bros. which was a totally different game.

I thought Sunshine was a nice continuation of Mario 64. No huge changes (same basic engine), but enough new stuff (obviously the water hose/jetpackamong others) to keep it interesting. Plus the return of Yoshi in playable form.

I messed around with a playable demo of the new Zelda game (which I have preordered in order to receive my free Ocarina of Time/Master Quest pack) at Wal-Mart, and it seems to be a cartoony version of the Nintendo 64 Zelda games. Same control scheme and whatnot. I was very skeptical of Cartoon Link, but after playing it, I'm pretty much sold, at least as far as the look is concerned. Anyway, it's a Zelda game, so I'm sure it won't disappoint.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

while we speak of back in the day...
Who here was a fan of the original double dragon? Gotta love the music. I'm not a rage against the machine fan, but it's worth mentioning that the guitarist from the band based some of what he played on the music for that game.

i used to pretend that my power glove was a cybernetic arm. that thing really sucked to play games with. all those confounded numbers and hand motions. you had to velcro the sensor to your tv. that makes me think of laser tag, which makes me think of photon. my grandpa accidentally got me a photon set for xmas one year. i wish i still had my laser tag gear. i'd wear the vest, chest sensor, and helmet all of the time. man, i'm going to look up laser tag on ebay. i'll strap a sensor to one of the cats and have some fun.

the best video game soundtrack is mega man 2. most squaresoft games have cool music. metroid and super metroid are excellent too(they're kind of eno-ish). i heard a while back that some guy at mtsu was going to get a mini orchestra together and perform the entire soundtrack to chrono trigger. i may be sad for this, but i think that would've been great. oh, and the punch out themes were awesome. the features should come out to don flamenco's theme. matt could have a rose in his mouth, throw an uppercut in the air, and start circus.

i like mario 2. the princess is my overall character of choice, and i've always thought toad was cool. luigi's difficult to control in that game....i hate those wobbly legged jumps. i'm sure some of you knew this, but mario 2 was originally another game in japan. they needed another american mario release, so they took that game(i forgot what it's called) and tacked the mario characters on it.

It was a close call between Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World for me. I had to go with Mario 3 though. I have so many fond memories with all of them. I remember the day I got each of my nintendos and the day I defeated each game. There's no telling how many memorable hours of my life have been spent on Nintendo. I'm always up for a good game of the ol' nintendo.

My favorite part about Mario 3 is the third world where you can get in the canoe and go to all the mushroom houses and spades. Mario's so cute in the little canoe. Oh, and I loved it when Mario gets to jump into the little green sock.

I never really got into Mario 2. I didn't own it but rented it every now and then.

I only recently purchased Mario 64, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I just don't like the Nintendo 64 controller's swivel thingy. I have trouble with that. I got Donkey Kong 64 a couple of years ago whenever Ray Davies and I bought a N64. I don't enjoy it too much. It's a little difficult.

*Courtesty of Zach Collier- Carligula.com:

*Yeah, I know you think that Mario’s first game was Donkey Kong, but you’re only sort of right. In that game, the leading man (who looks a lot like Mario and whose Marioness has recently been verified) is actually known as “Jumpman”. He wasn’t officially dubbed “Mario” until his second adventure, Donkey Kong Jr. So there. Donkey Kong 3? No… that wasn’t Mario at all. That dude’s name is Stanley, or Stan the Bug Man. Bad move, Nintendo. Stan’s a chump

remember that in SMB3, mario could play the flute. didn't that enable you to move up to higher levels? i doubt you even realized that you obviously made the wise decision with SMB3, because you got the best of both worlds: the game AND amazing flute-playing abilities.

Did anyone ever play the Mario "Lost Levels"? They were released in Japan between Mario 1 and Mario 2. It eventually came to the U.S. as part of "Super Mario All-Stars" for the SNES. The game played just like Mario 1, but it was SUPER difficult. I'm not sure I ever got past the second level. (But, then again, I sucked at the first Mario and still hate it to this day.)

i played the lost levels. that was actually released as smb 2 in japan. that game's insanely hard. i'm going to start playing mario 64, but my mind still has trouble adapting to 3 dimensional games. realistic voices trouble me too. i can handle a rusty computer voice saying "skate or die" though.

I've played the Lost Levels. I don't know if I ever beat it because it was the hardest thing ever created. I remember my friends and I spent one summer trying to get through it. There was some level where it was just huge pits and springboards and you had to bounce from one to the other to make it through. And there was wind pushing you around so you had to do it perfectly. Those Japanese kids are gluttons for punishment.

Dammit, now that I've said that much about a video game, I have to stop rolling my eyes when my roommates are sitting around playing nintendo all day.

I have that theme song on my computer. I wish I had the video of it with Captain Lou Albano doing the dance.

Does anyone remember the Mario Bros. television show?

* cue Mario theme music *
"Swing your arms
From side to side.
Come on it's time to go...
Do the Mario."
I'm too lazy to look it up, but we had a discussion about this recently in another thread. It eventually became Club Mario and had a theme song that ripped off Janet Jackson's Black Cat (or was it the other way around???). Friday was Zelda day.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

This is an insanely weird topic since HSSoma, IWElvis, a couple other friends and myself have spent the last three days playing old-school Mario while on spring break.

I suck at all NES games compared to the might of IWElvis. She was doing things with Mario 1 that I never knew could be done. I voted for Mario 3 since I actually spent a sizeable amount of time playing that game. I loved the cartoon that went with Mario 3 and the fact that Koopa had kids. I also have a VHS tape of an old Super Mario Bros. Super Show (guest starring Ernie Hudson) that also has an episode of Zelda. That rocked.

Now some questions:

1. Why was Bowser called King Koopa in the cartoon and not Bowser?

2. What did everyone call it when Mario was able to shoot fire? I called it Fire Power and my family called it Fire Eyes, but this weekend I have heard of Flower Power, Spit Fire, and Bomb Power. What was the official name?

And about other NES games, I am a huge fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, which was the Turtles Arcade Game on NES. That game rocked. And I still take original NES over any other NES. I just generally don't like the 3-D graphics and the non-side-scrolling nature of all these new games. I'm just an old fart.

i believe the official name was fire power. this is what i've always heard it called.

We just called it, "setting people on fire."

Turtles 2 was a great game, and I, too, am fond of the side-scrolling fight games like that. My other favorite was the 6-player X-Men game. A while back, TF and I got an emulator for that one and were in heaven for a few days (though it's much easier on computer when not relying on quarters to finish the game).

i liked the mario 3 cartoon more than the super show. there was also a super mario world cartoon for awhile, but i think it kinda sucked.
bowser and king koopa seemed to be interchangable in the early days (games, cartoons, whatever), but now "bowser" is pretty much permanent.

i've heard of both fire power and flower power, and also fire flower. i have never heard of "spit fire" or "bomb power".

i downloaded a mame emulator and played through the tmnt and simpsons arcade games. it was awesome. if you like that kind of stuff you should check out metal slug and its sequels.

Whenever I discovered the X-Men Arcade Game on the 'net, I created a thread for it (which I can't find...cos I'm tired and lazy). I must reiterate that I am still a huge X-Fan and that game defined my mall-existence from 4-5th grade. I consistently got first place when I played with Nightcrawler, and I still kick Sentinel-ass with my furry blue German.

And alongside the X-Arcade game, I recently hooked up my old Sega Genesis and discovered just how cool the X-Games were for it, as well as Spider-Man's "Maximum Carnage." The old days of video games were truly great.

Isn't it called the Great White?

Okay, that was uncalled for. I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist.

mame rules. download a game called "disco no. 1". it's not fun, but it would surely make you laugh. a lost arcade favorite of mine was a game called "s.t.u.n. runner". it was a really fast futuristic racing game made by atari.

Oh, that game was the shit! Wasn't it like a futuristic motorcycle-type game? That was like the pinnacle of 3D graphics at the time.

could you drive up on the walls? And at the end of each board did they attach a new piece of cannon to the front of your vehicle?

If so, you and you wife may have won an all expense paid trip to madrid, lisbon, and tahiti!

Actually, I just think I may have played this game.
An arcade favorite of mine was the Ex-men pseudo 3d side view side-scrolling fighter.
