TOPIC: BrianW... DEAD!
Posted  Monday, June 30, 2003 at 9:56 AM
Post 1 of 23
Ok, Ok, Ok, before y'all jump up my ass, BrianW is not dead. Just an eye catching title.

He did however bust his left leg in two places Saturday in a spelunking accident (I'm not making this up.) I guess a shelf gave way in an underground wet cave (are there above ground caves?) and he slipped, plummeting to his injury. It took the team he was with close to 6 1/2 hrs to get him out. I talked to him yesterday, he seemed fine (if not a bit stoned off his ass on pain meds). I'm sure he'll be posting an update here shortly to fill in my horribly inaccurate account of what happened.

Have a speedy recovery ol' chum, and maybe get a new hobby, like latch hook, there stud boy.

Get well soon, BrianW, if you read this.

I've been to Cumberland Caverns a couple of times and done the overnight "wild" tour. As we were trudging around in the depths of the earth, I would always be thinking what a nightmare it would be to get injured deep in a cave, and to have to try to get back out. I'm glad you survived.

Wow, get well soon. Maybe you should keep it safe and do what I do: nothing.

Yeah, I find life is easiest with no physical activity at all. Sorry about your luck, man. Get better!

HOLY CRAP! Oh man, that sucks. I went caving with him a few weeks ago and I must say the guy's a real pro. He must have been doing some really extreme caving to have been hurt that bad. There have got to be very few things that suck more than getting injured and then having to crawl out of a cave.

Get well soon, dude.

Man, that sucks! Get better soon BrianW!

Yeah, sitting in front of the computer and lying on the couch keeps me from harm's way most of the time...

I, too, have done the overnight tour\camping in Cumberland Caverns, and it's more tasking than I thought it would be. He died having fun, I can assure you.

Brian, you rock man. Recover quickly, but wear your scars with pride. You can prove how much of a badass you are.

Thanks guys. I'm hanging in there. Very immobile at the moment. I have surgery scheduled on Monday. Pain killers are great! Except when you take a couple in a narrow amount of time with little food. That's not good.

Not hardcore caving, but simply the rock shelf I placed my leg onto collapsed (I was crossing a rather narrow stream cut in the floor and as I put my left leg on the other side of this cut, it collapsed). I fell just three feet, but on my left leg and the weight of my body came down on top of it, twisting it under me. The rescue out was quite tiring and interesting. It took nearly 7 hours to move just 700 feet, but that including waterfall drops and stream filled passages that were in some places deeper than we were tall to get through. It'll make an interesting story one day, maybe.

Ack! Can you imagine what would happen to the message board if BrianW kicked the bucket? Oh yeah, and we'd miss him too. Seriously, that's a scary experience and I'm sure you could turn it into a Reader's Digest feature. They love that stuff.

Too bad you didn't cut off one of your appendages with a butter knife to escape--you would've made national news.
Get well soon!
